anson chan, in hong kong, welcome to hardtalk. thank you.n your city, we have seen three months now of street demonstrations and protests. they have become increasingly violent. is your heart and your head still with the protest movement? yes, very much so. i think it is a pity that there is escalating violence, both on the part of the protesters, although involving a very small number of people, but also on the part of the police. the police are increasingly brutal and unrestrained in exercise of their powers. but i'm very much behind the underlying causes of this movement. it is about hong kong's fight to defend basic freedoms, civil liberties and to demand political prime participation through fair and open elections on the basis of one man, one vote. all of which promised in thejoint declaration and hong kong's basic law, the basic law which is our mini constitution. you've just defined the protest movement's objectives in very broad terms, but it seems to me if i remember back tojune of this year, there was one very clear motivation and

right now, we want to focus in on one particular teacher by the name of scott chan. this newly released footage from the coast guard shows a worst case scenario. fire on board a boat in a remote location in the middle of the night. >> divers being involved all at once, it's unbelievable. >> reporter: here at pacific scuba divers, diving instructor charles says long-time customer scott chan was on board the ship. scott tried to convince the shop's owner to go on the trip, but he couldn't make it. >> he was an experienced diver. he'd come into the shop on a regular basis to get extra equipment, get the tanks filled. he enjoyed the dives and did it all up and down the coast here. >> reporter: the sleeping quarters inside the vessels that belong to the company. the bunks were on the third deck and there were no locked doors to the sleeping quarters, only curtains for privacy. so investigators believe that the divers likely awoke to the smoke and flames and were trapped inside. >> it's such a tight-knit community for divers. everybody knows everybody else and to lose a gr
