charlene babcock posted this youtube video two weeks ago. as an e.r.e wrote a study on the technique more than a decade ago. doctors all over the world have asked her for this how to video. she uses t tubes as splitters and shows how doctors can use three adapters to split two valves into four ports helping up to four patients. >> it has been studied in humans. >> reporter: in the tragic hours that followed the las vegas shooting, doctors used t tubes and adapters to keep more of the injured on ventilators until they could be transferred to other hospitals. this is the kind of ventilator the doctor is trying to adapt. >> we use t connectors at both ports without appropriate filters to decrease the cross contamination from one patient to another. >> reporter: he is studying it with other doctors to brainstorm on best practices. >> the challenge of that is the mashing of two patients. we're going to try to put two patients of the same size, respiratory properties and will be able to ventilate them for a while. >> reporter: new york governor andrew cuomo

charlene babcock who published a piece about how to hack your ventilator for one patient into being able to use it for four patients by basically putting more tubes into it. i saw another tweet today from a rural hospital that it actually done a similar operation. how much do you anticipate we're going to be seeing doctors trying to pull this off? >> i think we're going to be a lot -- seeing a lot of makeshift things like that. things i heard were possibly for example using veterinary respirators for humans. these are not things that happen in normal circumstances. but if you're in a case where you have no other supplies they might be the only way to help people. one other things you might see is there are anesthesia machines that are usually used during surgery as surgeries get cancelled as we are seeing elected procedures ended, those could be retrofitted as a ventilator in an emergency situation. so, i think you're going to see a lot of sharing among emergency room doctors about what works and doesn't. none of this is the status quo. all of this is going to be a little bit ad hoc and
