charles is next. >> bill: charles krauthammer, conservative, makes a nice living analyzing politics ands especially locked in on president obama. charles now says the president is finally revealing himself fully. he joins us now from washington. so you think there is a new revelation here? >> no, i think what's new is we've returned to the original obama. the obama of the first two years before, after the shellacking in the midterm elections, he moved -- he gave the appearance of moving to the center. look, the original obama comes in with a does he do? he adds another trillion dollars entitle ament with health care. he comes in and he tries to get cap and trade, federal control of energy. he spends a trillion dollars on a stimulus that achieves practically nothing. this is the original obama and he said early on, he's a social democrat, somebody who wants to see us more like europe. he spends a year after losing the midterm election and losing the house, pretending he's a centrist, but now with the election rolling around with no answers on jobs, and no answers on debt, he's decided to

[laughter] i thought it was relatively balanced. i chose not to, um, dwell at length sort of

conservative columnist charles krauthammer said following the debate that rick perry is, quote, stillrookie in the field. you represented george w. bush and he got a lot of heat sometimes for not really being the smartest guy on the stage. he became president, so does perry have reason to worry here? >> well, i don't think he has reason to worry. he's a strong rookie if you want to call him a rock okirookie. i think the issue is he got in late and i don't think anybody can understand it unless they go through a presidential how hard it is to mount a national campaign even if you're a popular governor like rick perry is. he's going to learn and what happens in september is really forgotten about in january by the time the first votes are taken. the key is will rick perry learn from some of the things that have gone on? will he become a stronger, better debater? and i think he will. he's that type of candidate. so lots of time. this is the grueling part of campaign season. last night was a bit of an off night for him. in the scheme of things, not a big deal. >> do you think he's smart?

i just want to get to this final point because charles krauthammer last night said he is still the rookie in the field and i keep coming back to why do these candidates live in iowa and new hampshire, they take the same question 40 different ways so they get the practice and rehearse their answer, so when it comes to prime time, they're effective. now, he has not had that just yet. because he's the newcomer to the race. >> yes. bill: can he sort that out in your view? >> sure. sure he k first of all, let me say, even going and doing a lot of town hall meetings helps prepare you for the debate, but the best thing to help you practice for big debates like this is to have you done -- having done a lot in the past. look, in 1998 when governor bush was running for reelection, he had one debate. in retrospect, that was a big debate because there weren't a lot of presidential debates in the primary necessary 1998 and 2000 but bush didn't fare particularly well in some of them because he didn't have the experience and done that before. >> bill: you need that time. >> you need that experience. bil
