the past is always present in charleston. as a boy growing up there i didn't understand this at the time. i didn't understand, there was a street that boarded - bordered our neighborhood, public housing project, years later, henry lawrence, the slave trader. i didn't know that faÇade which is still standing today in charleston was the faÇade -- of a rice mill. rice was a very important commodity in colonial south carolina, charleston rivaled philadelphia in new york and providence but i did know and we all knew and we all hated henry lawrence, john c calhoun, calhoun street is the church, the street on which the church fronts, a statue of john c calhoun. in the book i interviewed mister austin, used to show -- throw rocks up there, hitting the statue. he never could hit the statue but he improved his baseball arm i met harvey jones, a few years older than me and harvey was one of the first persons who told me his relationship with the church and his role as a young protester to the civil rights movement at emmanuel. one of th

joining me now, jennifer berry haas, reporter from charleston.ht now she's writing a book about the church shooting, the church massacre. also with me, cnn legal analyst joey jackson. so, thank you both for joining me. jennifer, beginning with you, how did he appear this morning in court and how did others in the room respond to him? >> sure. roof came into the courtroom wearing the gray and white prison -- or jail jumpsuit and sat at the defense table. normally he would expect him to be wearing street clothes when jury selection began. he sat down and very quickly the judge got into the defense motion to allow him to represent himself. the courtroom was about three rows were filled with victims' families, survivors, including felicia sanders, whose voice i believe you heard a few minutes ago. they all sat very quietly and attentively and listened as he answered basic questions from the judge regarding understanding the charges against him. the judge advised him that he had very good counsel and probably should stick with him, but roof answered p

he lived in an apartment complex located on charleston boulevard. jose was known as david to the kids there. and police say that he would promise them candy and take them sexual assault of a child and several counts of lewdness with a child. >> i've within in this complex two years. i've seen kids coming in and out of his apartment. i've seen him walking around with kids. i just thought it was probably his nephews or something. in october but took about a month before they caught one him. he's now in custody in the clark county detention center. >> dana: thank you. the man accused of driving drunk and killing two brothers in the valley was going an estimated 115 miles an hour down rainbow right before the crash. in an arrest report will light er four shots of hen see before that crash. roberts and asher were killed while making a u turn. their mom trying to process the loss of her boys. >> there is no excuse. you just did not care. you just did not care. plain and simple. >> dana: the mom at the crash scene yesterday. worth which came face to face w

today, a charleston judge ruled that dylann roof is competent. the 22-year-old had been federally indicted on 33 counts related to the murders in the horrifying 2015 killings at an african-american methodist episcopal church. roof, who says the death penalty, tried to avoid execution by offering to plead guilty and accepting a sentence that bid was rejected by prosecutors. jury selection in his death penalty murder case is scheduled for monday. >>> the elections may be over but not everyone is ready to throw in the towel. tonight, money is being poured in to force a recount in three states. former presidential candidate, jill stein of the green party, is filing recounts in wisconsin, pennsylvania and michigan. today, stein's campaign filed for the recount. they submitted to pay for it as well. >> what we're seeing there is a enough peripheral evidence to warrant that our system should be investigated. we are not doing this to the benefit of one candidate over the other. we're doing this for the benefit of the american public so we can trust that
