it was august in charleston.we can only assume it was sweltering with justice johnson writing circuit and sitting before a courtroom packed with onlookers. johnson was hearing a case in which a free black british sailor named henry allison was challenging a south carolina law that required that any free black sailor to barking from a vessel in any south carolina port be immediately jailed for the duration of his vessel's stay. the battle over this law known as the police bill or the seaman's act involved numerous levels of governmental and nongovernmental actors. each with its own views concerning the constitution ality of the state regulations. officials involved in these debates showing that this again was not simply a federal versus state dichotomy. officials involved included united states secretary of state john quincy adams, u.s. attorney general william wirt, british in london, british consuls in charleston, the south carolina delegation and local officials such as the sheriff, one francis g. dulles, ailee

johnson was deeply from charleston, as we will see, but this is not typical account of what charleston usually witnessed or stood for in the 1820s and 1830s. our second charlestonians is mariah henrietta pinckney, born in 1774 and died in 1836. no portrait of her survives, but her writings do. this is the cover page of one of her pamphlets. the quintessence of long speeches: a political catechism for her daughter by her daughter. she was the niece of revolutionary generals and drafters and modifiers of the constitution. plenty of portraits of them. she was described by her family as a woman of masculine intellect, a wonderful appellation. she was a writer, a planter in her own right, a slaveowner in her own right and a leading theorist and strategists of the nullification movement. the male cousins served in the south carolina nullification convention in 1832 come up but it was the pinckney mansion come at this point owned by mariah henrietta pinckney and her sister, that nullification leaders sought for the backdrop of the parades in public ceremonies. and it was mariah henrietta's de

here is a map of charleston 1855. this is a close-up that shows a few blocks away was the pinkney mansion on the bottom right. they were very different types of structures. the pinkney mansion is at the center of understanding of maria hen reetpinkney's life as well. she was the daughter of a famed patriot and later vice presidential candidate charls coatsworth pinkney. here is a picture of him in the election of 1800, he came close. maria reeta pinkly never naerd. she and her sisters inherited the house and several plantations and more than 200 inslived people. in 1830, maria henrietta pinkly announced herself as a. she explained why. this was the political catechism. in 1830, she published the pamphlet, long speeches as a caticism by a lady for her god daughter, a long title. the use of the caticism term was deliberate. religious instruction was the province of women, especially upper class protestant women. but this is a different kind of catechism. it is not about what is the nature of god or the trinity. it is wh

that said, there we are, that massive abolitionist, male, female in charleston, just the worst placeit was it addressed anybody. yes. so they wanted to address it. it's the people whose names they were able to find. and so, in theory, would be delivered to a random in charleston, including prominent slaveholder, as you know, whose names would be out there. so, yeah, it had to be addressed and they you know they sent it the us mail and the regular way so it really presented the post office with a quandary and the federal government in fact with a quandary and you know that the us post office decided they weren't crazy about delivering abolitionist propaganda. you know, again, you know, this is kind of a radical fringe group in, the 1830s, but the government and the post also and this includes president andrew jackson as well and they kind of recognize they're in a difficult they don't to be seen to be censoring free expression of ideas. they don't want to get into the business of determining which ideas can be transmitted. the us mail and which cannot. and so they kind of fudged and h
