i know some of us will feel like charlie brown here, but i believe. i'm an optimist at heart, so i really think that we can do it. i think this is the time for all of us to collaborate and to come together and put any little issues aside and put our shoulders to the grind stone and work really hard to make sure that happens. we know when we choose to work on mental health issues, we strengthen families, and we also know we are not taking life easy road. that's why gatherings like this one are so very, very important. we come together as advocates, consumers that care so much about this issue that understand the importance of the issue, the depth it brings to us, when we have someone in our family, co-worker, anybody. one in five families in america will be touched with a mental health issue. we understand that. it is so important to communicate that with other people. coming together like this gives us a chance to reinforce that sense of community, and at this time at the top of the mountain to consolidate our forces. i know that is something that you

the only thing that's missing in the aisle that separates republicans and democrats is a checkpoint charlie. a lot of republicans just never ever go over to the other side and talk to democrats, and democrats don't go over and talk to republicans. and you ask why and they just say because and use a fine. but it was fascinating. i was a bit liberated when i got up to washington since my political party, the republican party tried to kill me lyrically throughout the first campaign. i was able to do whatever i wanted. there were several times that newt gingrich started to threaten me and say get in line or else. i said or else what? are you going to campaign against me? i got 62%. please, come to my district and campaign against me. so again the opportunity to team up with democrats when i wanted, go after democrats when i wanted. and what i found was that that sort of independence, listen, i'm a very, very conservative guy but that independence from partisanship from having to play as a republican with every single thing i did actually work very well with voters. doing, my gosh, how radical.
