[laughter] >> did not want to make anyone same old. before the debate between romney and obama, did anyone think romney had a chance of winning this election? do you think there is a chance that obama could lose? >> a chance. president obama was ahead by 3- 5. romney's favorable swore under water. it was in bad shape in ohio, michigan, and pennsylvania. i would put it -- i would give obama the edge 60-40. watch ohio. >> watch ohio. there is a way for romn

scott, i spent a good part of today with the two most respected political analysts in the country, charlie cook and stu rothenberg. their publications are the bibles for political reporters. here is what they told me in separate interviews. for the first time that either of them can remember this deep in a campaign they have no idea who is going to win. both of them say the race is so close there is a real possibility now that romney could win the popular vote and the president the electoral college vote. cook told me he had this race figured out he thought five days ago. he saw obama as the slight favorite, now he says "i'm perplexed, i just don't know." rothenberg feels much the same. the words he uses are "feeling flummoxed." tse says there were two times this year when the race seemed to change. the president started gaining after the democratic convention, romney began to climb after the first debate. but is he still climbing? rothenberg says he just doesn't know. both men say the undecided vote now is probably between 3% and 5%. what all this suggests to me, scott, is that this election c

let me bring up this, a spent friday, spent a good part of the day with stu rothen bargain, and charlie cook, and i would these are the most respected analysts going today. both told me separately they could not remember a time this deep into the campaign when they said they had no idea how this was going to come out. i want to go around the table, i'll start with you, bob. what do you think is going to happen? >> i think the president is going to win. he has a big advantage in the elect torral college and in terms of what john and ruth are saying, a republican, a friend of mine who ran republican campaigns, said they backed themselves into a demographic cul-de-sac, with women, hispanices, younger voters who are repeld by a lot of what they say on social issues. >> schieffer: you think it's obama? >> yes. >> i think independent voters continue to move away from the president because he has not been able to convince people the economy will be better in the next four years. and the president remeans under 50%. and-- >> he, doesn't, in many of the states. i'm sorry, john. you want to do the rea

>> well just so you understand charlie cook has forgot more about the senate races than i ever knew. he is the bible and one of the reasons people beforehand, a year ago, six months ago thought that the republicans weren't so sure as he pointed out 2006 was the way the election and democrats won in a lot of places like montana that you would expect them to win so as they went in and correct me if i'm wrong, visit democrats were defending 23 seats in the republicans only 10. just by the nature of the mathematics it seems likely the republicans would pick up seats in the democrats would look 23-10 but right now the conventional wisdom in the charlie cook wisdom is probably less than 50/50 that the republicans will take the senate. >> talking about the house for a moment. the houses controlled by the republicans and democrats have picked up a lot of seats. can the democrats regain control of the house? >> it's a longshot and democrats needed 25 seat net gain. at the end of world war ii only one party, the party of the white house picked up 15 seats in a presidential election year and th

let's show this map, this is nine swing states, charlie cook says this race will go down the wire.ely is it do you think that there will be an electoral college tie? >> well it's very, very unlikely. this is a nightmare scenario of sorts. lots of things have to fall into place and given how many combinations there can be with the nine swing states that we currently see, it's very, very unlikely we would get to a situation where we would have 269 electoral votes on either side. >> you outline five scenarios in your article where this could happen. what are the most likely? >> sure. all scenarios assume states like michigan and ohio go for obama and romney carries arizona meenz. first scenario we look at would be new hampshire, ohio and wisconsin all going for president obama. and romney carrying all the other swing states. under that scenario both candidates would be at 269 electoral votes. the next scenario would be colorado, virginia and which is going for obama and the other ones going for romney. a third scenario would be new hampshire, north carolina and virginia all going for

so. >> charlie cook who is running?preciate what i've done anything with the aspen institute it's been a wonderful experience. the one time i took my son out to the global strategy conference in aspen and there was bob gates before he was the cia director and over there is al gore and george soros, and you know, here i am from shreveport thinking how did i get here. but anyway, the aspen institute is wonderful. my old boss that i got my start working for the senate race in 1972 is sitting here. so, anyway, thanks. the way i would look at it is the popular vote, the national polls i think is equal right now and i want to get into a conversation of the polls, but i agree that the electoral college situation looks a little different and it is more of hill for romney. the way that i would describe it is this. first of all, president obama was on the verge of putting this away in the first debate. it was all but done. you had a lot of voters that were not even considering thinking about voting. considering mitt romney -- if

. >> charlie cooke is one of the critical procrastinators around here. the critically said some time back that of president obama is reelected it will be despite the economy. if iran is reelected, despite his campaign. i think -- if mitt romney is elected, it will be despite his campaign. i think he grew up in a privileged environment, just like his father wanted to give everything he can. john mccain was someone isolated in his thinking somewhere along the way. also, his parents instilled upon him that because of those privileges, he had a responsibility and that his class had a responsibility to give back and to be a leader later. i think he wants to be president because he wants to make good decisions. he wants to reorganize the government so that it is efficient. he can tell you 137 things he wanted to get done. i do not think mitt romney can tell you what he wants to do. he just wants to be a good president. because of that, if he is leavihe is weaving around out there. he was a very progressive governor until he started looking presidentially and t

. >> charlie cook, a prognosticator who seems to think the election will, quote, it will require a massiveup by president obama or some international event that just shakes everything up. romney's got a week to turn this thing around." if something doesn't happen soon, republicans will panic. how much is riding on tonight's debate? i want to go back out to erick. >> i wouldn't say it's a complete law, but yeah, i tend to think mitt romney is building things. people are voting around the country and that's just the reality. republicans can be made at me, but it is. i really am hesitant of locking these things in with a month to go overall. because as charlie pointed out, events do change things rapidly towards an election. >> how about the stories we are circulating from yesterday with the done nors moving their money to the congressional races, richard. >> well, i think you'll see that on the republican side. a lot of money, though, still in this race. so on either side. they won't worry about money. but i agree with erick, governor romney really needs to do something and probably do it to

what is so interesting is a year ago charlie cook gave a 60% chance for republicans to take the senate. he is not there anymore and he doesn't think republicans will take the senate anymore so that certainly has waned. that kind of momentum that the republicans is all had as a party to take the senate is gone. most predictions are that the senate will stay democratic, that we may lose one or two seats but that it will stay democratic and essentially what that will mean is it's going to be in even more divided congress. in terms of the house, the latest polls that i have seen art that democrats may pick up a couple of seats which again i think goes to the reversal of the republican trend from a year ago. i think a lot of those seats -- two years ago, thank you. a lot of those seats will be because latinos are winning as was mentioned earlier, and bud again, this is not a wave election by any means, meaning there is not one wave on one side of the democrats and one wave on the other side further republicans. whereas two years ago they were hoping that this was going to be another wave el

i was with charlie cook last night. one of the prognosticators around here. charlie famously set some time back that if president obama is reelected it will be despite the economy. if governor romney gets elected it will be despite his campaign. and i think that is playing out right now, and that the part of it is this 50 percent attitude. i think the other thing, governor romney, i think he grew up in a privileged environment. just like i want to give my daughter all that i can. his father wanted to do the same. became, you know, was somewhat isolated with the schools. i think sort of thinking along the way. and i think he also, his parents instill upon them that because of those privileges he had a responsibility. and that is, what you might say, class and the responsibility to give back and to, you know, to be a leader. and so i think he wants to be president because he wants to make good decisions. he once said, with the circumstances as the ambassador said, he wants to reorganize the government so that it's efficient. but unlike bill clinton who could tel
