in the meantime, congressman charlie crist joins me now by phone.where you were? thank you first for your excellent coverage. i'm in downtown petersburg. we're seeing decent wind, not terrible. we nose there's more to come. >> what we're getting here in miami, you will potential get much worse. >> mow do you think the ampa bay area will be able to handle that? >> a storm surge like that is something you will worry about, but depending on where the storm continues to track will be a huge factor in how much of a surge we experience or on the back side of the storm. that all depends, as you know, whether the eye goes to the east or west of us. >> millions of people in the past of the storm. tens of shelters, as far as -- >> well, they're pretty full now. >> we have got a lot of shelters fortunately. people have heeded the evacuation orders, which is important. so i think we're doing pretty well. we have some shelters that are taking pets, cats and dogs as well, which are very important to people. >> now, 1 million people-plus without power already. tha

joining me is congressman charlie crist joining us from st. petersburg. congressman crist is the former governor of florida and knows all too well what it's like to govern during a harsh time of hurricane season. as a former florida governor, what's your opinion? have the combined efforts of the federal, state, and local officials done what's needed to be done to inform and protect people here? >> i believe so, thomas. it's been an extraordinary effort at every level, federal, state, and local. and that level of cooperation continues to impress me and i think impresses all of our fellow floridians. the cautionary note of getting out and evacuating early was the right call. this storm is bearing down on us as we all know. and being prudent, being safe, and being smart, those are the watch words now, and you know, if you are in an evacuation zone, you need to, you know, not wait. you need to evacuate. and that's awfully important for people to go ahead and heed that. >> and sir, when you think about what governor rick scott is going through right now, how h

i'm joined now by charlie crist and daniella la cava. thank you for joining us.with you. i'm beginning to think this is what countries who go through war have to prepare for. this is evacuations, refugee situations, almost to use the word apocalyptic isn't quite overdoing it. >> it's a very difficult situation. a lot of times it's delicate to try and figure out what the right call is. from my point of view, everyone has their own style, but you want to keep calm. you want to make sure that people are prepared. make sure they're well informed. when you make a call of an evacuation, you make it with all the facts you have at hand in order to make a common sense decision like that. and err on the side of caution and make sure that you're protecting the people and it's all about safety first. i can't stress that enough. you know, you'd rather be criticized for evacuating a little too early than a little too late, as you just talking about with new orleans. so i think we've gotten it right here. an awful lot of people have already evacuated. in large measure, i think,

former florida governor charlie crist joins me by phone. he's now a congressman representing the state's 13th congressional district including st. petersburg. congressman, tell me what the situation is there with your constituents. >> thank you, i appreciate the opportunity to be with you. yeah, here in st. petersburg, it's not bad. we've still got wind and gusts. and an occasional shower still coming through like almost mini bands, if you will, spun off in the very outskirts of the hurricane. and we've got limbs down. a few trees are down. we never did have the flooding. in fact, as you all have been reporting, we have a lot of tampa bay kind of washed out into the gulf of mexico because of the side of the storm that was blowing water out instead of blowing it in. we were fortunate for that. and in the way, it was a blessing to our part of the state. and i was hearing you talking earlier about cuba and the fact that you know, the storm was there for a full day. really did seem to take a lot of the energy out of irma and that really helped

neil: former democratic governor and congressman charlie crist. good to have you. >> thank you, neil. neil: how is it looking there? >> i'm in st. petersburg. it is like the calm before the storm, to be honest with you. it is beautiful day. sun is out. we know what is coming. we have to be prepared and vigilant. neil: congressman, how do you play this though? if every city, you know, is potential target and every city is, stands to get even an indirect hit, i'm thinking all of those hundreds of thousands of evacuees, maybe into the millions by tomorrow at this time, where do they go? do they go into georgia? do they keep going north? how far north? >> all depends obviously. the closer the storm gets to us, neil, more precise the prediction comes as you know. it looks like it will have a good possibility of coming right up the spine of florida, right in the middle of the peninsula, perhaps. although, you know. i remember back in 2004 with hurricane charley, it was coming up the gulf of mexico and predicted at that time to go directly into tampa bay
