now pennsylvania congressman charlie dent and a member of house appropriations committee. good to have you here. >> thank you for having me on the program. >> absolutely! let's start with comey. what will you be on the lookout for when he testifies, giving his version of events? what questions do you want to have answered? >> i think what everyone would like to have answered is what was actually said between the president and james comey. you know, was there a truth to the statement? i would suspect questions would be asked of james comey about the original meeting. where they, where donald trump i guess had made some suggestions in the mr. comey wrote this down in a memo. we want to basically establish facts. that is what we want to do. that is a key issue. >> without any recorded version of what happened you think we will get the truth other than he said he said? >> well, we might. the fact that the fbi director wrote this in a memo immediately after the meeting, i think it is important. i think that is a meeting with a talk about easy movie on michael flynn. i think tha

joining us now is republican congress member charlie dent.was not in favor of the special prosecutor, he says he does have confidence in mueller and supports his appointment. why the shift? you were against it. now you are for it. tell us why. >> thanks, chris, for having me on the program. i said last week after the firing of director comey that there was an inevitability of the investigation similar to 9/11 style. i select this appointment. director mueller has impeccable credentials. this is the right thing to do. this will help the situation. you have been talking about how this effects the investigations. i did serve on the house ethics committee. i was chairman of the committee. i was involved with sensitive investigations and sometimes interaction with justice and sometimes congress is asked to defer an investigation to justice. i served as chairman and we often did that when the request was made. it remains to be seen how members of the intelligence committee will react to the request. i expect there may be entanglements. >> given the

senators like charlie dent don't agree with that. we don't have time for the sound bite, but charlie dent has real concerns about what people with pre-existing conditions, how they would be impacted with this bill. why the confusion here? >> well, for the exact reason we just talked about, which is he says stuff that's not consistent with what his advisers say, and then they have to try to make it work. but remember the reason that the freedom caucus signed on to this new version of the health care bill was because the pre-existing conditions things went to the states, right? that's the whole difference, that it's not for everyone. it went to the states. now he's saying it's not true, but then if you listen to the clip you played earlier, then he says, well, the states are going to have a large role. how do you square that circle? i talked with one senior republican house member who said gary cohn, president trump's economic adviser who said the votes are there, that that's premature, still not there. doesn't mean they can't get ther

you have more of the moderates like charlie dent and others who are saying, this -- people -- this is going to take away medicaid expansion, we could lose our election. this is a difficult spot for them. everyone remembers politics -- political science 101. i think that's what you are running into here with the speaker's inability to get the republicans on board because the districts are at stake here. losing an election is at stake. if they risk it there, you might get primaried by a democrat. if they don't do it, then you might get primaried by a more conservative member. it's a quandary. demographics in the districts and the medicaid expansion, people like that. >> there's the issue of pre-existing conditions, whether that's covered. the president says he mandated that is in the bill. people are saying, states can get a waiver to opt out. >> right. that's actually politically speaking, i think that actually might be a -- one of the few things about the bill that makes a little bit of sense. if you are a moderate republican representing a purple state, that state is probably not goi

as charlie dent told me today, i'm not aware of anybody on the center right that has moved from a no to a yes because of these changes. >> let me get a couple of questions in in a hurry here. what happens to the individual mandate in this plan? the business mandate? what happens to the exchanges? and finally, what happens with tax reform? anything new there? >> well, the individual mandate is not eliminated, but they've changed from enforcing it via the tax penalty, which is under current law, but enforcing it via insurance companies being able to charge a higher premium if you exit the system and then come back in. that is not considered to be as strong. but it is something. and in terms of tax reform, we are still in a position where we've got to see more detail from the administration before the house can know what to do. they have sidelined the border adjustment tax, but we don't know if they will replace it with something else. >> john harwood in washington, thank you. >>> president trump would consider raising the federal tax on gasoline to pay for his infrastructure plan. in a

i spoke with charlie dent, the leader of the centrist tuesday group.an dent, you said you're a no on the new version of the health care bill. what needs to happen to get to yes? and do you believe the legislation is going to pass the house in the current form. >> thank you for having me on the program. first, let me say this, the bill in its current form is problematic for a few reasons. one, the medicaid provisions are challenging. the bill does not provide a soft enough landing for states like mine who have expanded medicaid. that's the first issue. the governors offered a plan that i think needs to be taken seriously, to make sure there isn't a cost shift to the states on medicaid. i would tell you, too, that the states aren't given enough flexibility or the resources to deal with medicaid. the second issue, the tax credits are not sufficient for many people who are transition from medicaid on to the exchanges. many low and moderate income people will not be able to afford insurance. and far too many americans will be uncovered in the current versio
