charlie sykes, you have a new piece, is disqualifying trump anti-democratic. by that, is a lone secretary of state stepping forward and saying this candidate cannot be on the ballot, is that anti-democratic. where do you land on that question? >> i'm sympathetic to the question. i think there is a potential for a backlash, but the bumper sticker is that we are taking donald trump off the ballot and so i tried to address a very narrow question which is that we talk a lot about democracy, and justifiably so. this country is not tombly a democracy. it is a representative democracy. it is about the rule of law and the constitution means something. there is something the majority does not do, the constitution lists many things that even a super majority can't do. they are prohibited by the constitution. if you're 32 years old. that is just constitutional but, and so those things are undemocratic but not necessarily anti-democratic. the liberal constitutionalism of our system says we are a nation of laws not of men. in some ways the trump folks are about to do this

i do want to go to charlie sykes. trump and ron desantis now for well over a year. and that's been how this republican race has been framed. does that all change tonight if you have donald trump in the mid-40s. nikki haley in the mid-20s and ron desantis down in the teens somewhere? is that the end for desantis? and does this become a one-on-one race as nikki haley moves towards new hampshire and may win? >> well, if ron desantis has a reality check, he's spent all of his resources on iowa. and then, you know, comes in third, where does he have to go? he has no presence really in new hampshire. he's going to get smoked in south carolina. so, yeah, i think this is the end of the road for ron desantis whether or not he recognizes it or not. so, yes, it does become one-on-one. but i have to say, you know, you have to pull back, though, the reality check. looking at the republican party. looking at the polls. looking at the map. over the weekend, marco rubio and mike lee were feeding the idea that people grow in political

's talk about this. we have seen in the midterm elections and off-year elections and referenda around the country that regard also of people's underlying views of abortion, this seems to be a universality that americans don't want rights taken away from them. they don't want certain decisions made on their behalf. what's your sense of the biden campaign deciding that abortion and its connection to -- abortion rights and their connection to donald trump is going to be central? >> well, this ought to be pretty obvious considering how it played during the midterm elections. it will rally the base and obviously will -- turnout is crucial, enthusiasm is crucial, but i think it will also appeal to swing voters who are watching this, particularly as one legislature after another passing punitive pieces of legislation and one twist on this, i think there's also an opportunity for joe biden and the democrats to challenge republican credentials on being pro-life. look at donald trump and say do
