charlotte pinsky joins us from paris good afternoon charlotte just run through then why french authorities felt the need to do this. this warning has been issued for those traveling and living in some muslim majority countries and it comes as there are rising tensions between france and those countries over comments made by president in the wake of that terror attack the beheading of teach patty president said he would defend the right to show controversial cartoons of the muslim prophet mohammed now there is this huge anti sentiment that is is sparked up in the wake of that with protests now in many majority muslim countries with some of the awning effigies of president back on and of course from caught on french products. was it was feeling as if it would happen if the tab was. well present my corner has refused to step down over this comments which would perhaps defuse this situation and he has been accused of whipping up anti muslim sentiment and that's because in the wake of that terror attack there has been a crackdown on muslim associations and of mosques that are all said to have extremist sympathies here in france and there's already been some repercussions seen with attacks being investigated including attack that took place last week in order in the west of france and that was against 2 jordanians a brother and a sister who required hospital treatment they say they were attacked because they were speaking arabic now the charge against present on has been led by the turkish president president who on who suggested twice in recent days that maccan needs a mental health check but even here in france some muslim association say that they do not want these quantrill herschel cartoons to be shown in schools. and the deliberate will to affirm the feelings of muslims there is the duty of brotherhood and responsibility. there's also a growing fear here in france one poll recently showed that 79 percent of people who responded that really believed that islam is some had declared war on the country of france and the recalls for increased vigilance particularly around places of worship and in gatherings and that warning comes with france's director general of the national police who believes that the terror threat here is particularly high in the wake of all of this this route between france and muslim majority countries seems to be widening every day and it's spilling out now into some very serious consequences ok thank you charlotte charlotte there for us in paris. now there is growing resentment in europe over new rules aimed at combating the spread of coronavirus although countries have stopped short of returning to full lock downs people are still flouting measures currently in place there were riots in barcelona for example hundreds gathered in the central square there protesting against the state of emergency imposed across spain and they gnawed a nighttime curfew they also set on fire near the regional parliament and there were similar scenes too when italy where several cities or protests get out of hand in turin smoke bombs were let off and bottles hurled police while in milan right offices resorted to using tear gas we've got reaction to the new measures in both spain and italy. as you can see italy is rebelling this government has decided to suppress the italian people to starve them today we hope that this government will fall soon ronnell because. these are quite drastic measures but they are kind of

charlotte charlotte the bill to give air force in paris. ok we can talk now with john laughlin he's a lecturer in history at the university institute of in a tent in paris and joins us live now thanks for coming on jon. what do you make of these latest incidents that we've seen let's just start with the small innings incident how would you look at this in context of recent events in france. well i think like everybody i look at it with intense emotion and terrible foreboding only last night as your viewers know president mccall announced very draconian powers to crackdown on the coronavirus his announcement was on the one hand a statement of massive state power the deployment of massive state power of a kind which western europe has not seen since the war. i'm referring of course to the lock down but also to new measures like the requirement that children age 6 wear masks and people wear masks in their own homes and things like that so massive state power on the one hand and on the other hand as with this attack. a blatant inability of the state to maintain law and order because as your reporter has just confirmed and as we know this latest beheading because it it is a beheading and let's not be any in any doubt about that in a church comes as everyone knows shortly after the beheading of a schoolteacher so we have this terrible insoluble contrast between the massive deployment of state power against the coronavirus and this total impotence of the state to do anything about the much worse virus of islamic radicalism because let's be no doubt that the man away assume it's a man who committed this these murders is only one of many many thousands tens of thousands maybe hundreds of thousands of potential terrorists in the muslim population of france and the presence of those people in france and on the territory of france has not only been tolerated but has been encouraged for years by political correctness the state and its representative. shed crocodile tears every time there's a terrorist attack but this is no all these people who died this morning in nice the nearly 300 victims there have been nearly 300 victims of islamic terrorism islam is terrorism in france in the last 3 years 300 you know the country is in a state of civil war when people are decapitated in churches we are very close to if not already in a state of civil war in france. what you just on one point there john i know you said it was decapitation i think we're still waiting for official confirmation on that point but what do you make of the french president and the turkish president and what they've said about the depictions by charlie hebdo. caricature was a prophet mohammed and also those now of the turkish president do you think that is linked to the timing of today's attack in any way. i think the reason why. we might be waiting for official confirmation of the decapitation is literally out of respect for the victims but there can be no doubt that these people had their throats slit they were they got 3 in french and whether or not their heads actually came off their bodies i don't know but the attempt was clearly i don't think we should be any naive about this was clearly to replicate the decapitation of the schoolmaster you asked me about the context with the schoolmaster and the debate about free speech of course that has inflamed muslim opinion around the world you've just shown some pictures on the screen but i go back to what i said just now these people are nearly there and they are it's very close now to 300 victims if not if that figure has not yet been reached it's very close to 300 victims over the last few years and let's not forget that nice itself the city where this latest attack occurred was of course the place where a terrible terrorist attack took place in the summer of 2016 where a lorry ran over about 80 people killing about 80 people that event long predated the debate about free speech or charlie and do. cartoons in other words what we are dealing with is as i say and as a specifically islamist terrorism it's not just against charlie hebdo and that the doctrine of free speech in france the fact that people were killed in a church is quite clearly quite clearly self evidently has a religious dimension and unfortunately i don't think that the french political elite with all the political correctness that i just mentioned is able to internalize this religious dimension to the war that is being waged. many muslims the majority of muslims about every muslim organization i've heard speak on the radio has condemned such attacks do you not think that we should see the french president try and work with the existing muslim community more openly perhaps more explicitly on television to try and prevent a greater division of what's going on in france at the moment. i'm sorry to to disagree with you andrew but when the schoolmaster was decapitated one of the main muslim organizations in france the cia refused to condemn it and referred only to mourning to the requirement to mourn the victim there was no condemnation of the perpetration of the attack i'm afraid again we mustn't be naive yes some are associations some mosques and so on will condemn it and some have as you rightly say but not all and a lot of muslims unfortunately not only don't condemn it but applaud these kinds of attacks when they occur on social media let's not forget that the man who decapitated the schoolmaster broadcast on his own i think instagram account the fact that he had done it he was proud of it and i think it's almost certain that he was applauded for his act by other people what we have to again i repeat i've said it now twice or said a 3rd time we can't be naive when you have terrorist attacks of this kind the and this is the terrible dilemma in this kind of situation the goal is to invite reprisals in other words the goal is to radicalize and to destroy exactly the kind of efforts pacification that you have alluded to in your question and the goal of that is to radicalize. the atmosphere and to poison the atmosphere even further in order to ratchet up the state of civil war because if inus much as there is any strategic or tactical calculation behind these attacks it is surely to poison the social atmosphere so much that there will actually be some kind of civil war and as i say this is a terrible time limit for the state because of course there is immense anger including now among the french elites. and i have no doubt among the security forces but they have to strike this incredibly difficult balance in unbelievably difficult circumstances where as i said earlier you have a very large number i can't put a figure on it but a very large number of young men who are prepared to commit this kind of atrocity what can be done then do you think as the next step to try and deescalate this because this into what you've said it sounds very entrenched sides here and if anything matters could easily get worse so what would you like to see done to try and deescalate if that's possible. i don't think a deescalation is the right. approach i mean other people praying in the church this morning were hardly escalating anything they were undertaking the most peaceful act possible imaginable. what i think needs to be done is that control is why i started my remarks by talking about this huge demonstration of state power for the krone virus the state needs to take back control to use the bricks it slogan of those hundreds of territories in france including many in the south of france and i have no doubt that the city of nieces has such as owns where there is effectively no law and order because for many many years now if not decades the police have had a hands off approach with these areas and they have been allowed to fester i bet you anything that when the identity of the attacker is released to the press we will hear as has been the case with all these previous attacks that he was known to the security services and was known for various. crimes petty or large criminality the fact is that the state has lost control a long time ago of these areas and without. a very strong reassertion of state or therapy i'm afraid i think the situation is desperate i can john really good to talk to thanks here at thoughts the south end of jonathan and lecture in history in paris thank you. now protests are gripping muslim world as you mentioned there over the french president's recent defense of the right to parody religion does come this french satirical magazine charlie hebdo is caricature wars are at the center of the rot adds fuel to the fire with its latest front cover it does feature a cartoon of the turkish president who's been one of the fiercest critics of the french state stance on freedom of expression and chris called the front cover disgusting but turkish prosecutors launching a criminal probe and response to charlotte publishing the caricature of the turkish president slammed its alleged hostility towards islam adding that disrespect for the prophet mohammed is spreading like a cancer especially among european leaders we asked people in paris how they see the cartoon. personally i find it disrespectful even if we have the right to use blasphemy we have no right to mock religion. in these times of crisis and international attacks on france i find it important to reaffirm the values on which we are firmly established in france the caricature is the 1st of these. the publication of this drawing and marking a religion is dangerous because it increases hatred. it represents the fact that despite everything humor is the most important thing and there are one in this position after everything here said about france and the president of our republic gets a nice lesson from charlie hebdo. that's the latest drawing without a one it's a provocation meanwhile the french ambassador to sweden has recently gone a

charlotte dubin ski charlotte various reports they've been emerging be in the hours since this attack do we have any more clarity on what happened well that's right as you mentioned there a suspect is in custody but it's not been confirmed that this is definitely the perpetrator behind this attack which saw a 52 year old greek orthodox priest shot in the stomach now the priest who is attended to by medics at the scene was able to give a description of the perpetrator and he has been named the priest that is by the greek government is being nicolas akaka the lack of this now there is some suggestion that this may be a small to speak to but i'll tell you about more about that in a minute let's 1st of all let's have a look at what i witness accounts saw and heard around the time that those shots rang out in the. i live in the area and i heard gunshots but if urged i thought it was from here for years but didn't take it seriously and then i saw the moderate lights the road blocks in the police and i realized that it was serious but there is a church here and the priest was 47 years old was shot while. i lived nearby i was watching t.v. at home and suddenly i heard something like hammer blows some big booming noises so i thought it might be kids playing outside i decided to figure out what was going on that i heard someone screaming when i went downstairs i saw the police and realized what was happening unfortunately this time it's in what's going to happen next that's what we are now asking ourselves. in the aftermath of the shooting across is a unit was set up by the interior minister the french prime minister canceled a vent that he was heading to to come back to paris and we know an investigation has now been opened into what is being deemed an attempted assassination but what hasn't happened which would normally happen if there was any sense that this was a terror attack or terrorist related is the fact that this would normally be seized by the anti terror prosecution unit that hasn't happened in this case and french media are reporting that they are hearing from the ground that this shooting moved as a result of a personal dispute apparently the priest was soon to be leaving the community in the yawn to go to a new station and that's because there have been some disputes in the community this is what's being reported by the french press but of course this comes at a highly sensitive time here in france with just a couple of days after a terror attack it was described by president machen as being in islam is terror attack that saw 3 people brutally murdered in the town of nice let's just have a reminder of what unfolded there. but in this new tragedy today you see victims of islamofascism child repeatedly denounced. return to. the siren of the farm and the police arrived weekly just really with bikers and everything that followed then they set up a security system i went down with my scooter and i saw the guy come in and take refuge in the cathedral afterwards i heard a lot of gunshots. well as a result of that brutal horrific attack that unfolded the niece on thursday france has raised its terror alert up to the maximum level the country now deploying $4000.00 extra security personnel to troy and bolster the security situation in the country this comes as france is about to celebrate all saints' day which is a major catholic holiday in the country the country's prime minister cast dix has said that you know all french people should be able to count on the nation to be able to carry out their religious beliefs their services in full safety and we know that security is being deployed to bolster churches and schools off that there was a specific threat that came out from an agency linked to the terror network al qaida that came out just a couple of days ago but the reality is france has tens of thousands of churches tens of thousands of school so. no matter how many personnel are deployed you just can't have security personnel outside every building so a huge amount of tension here in france as this major festival is about to be celebrated given the fact that france is now back at a maximum terror alert an alert that was 1st raised up to that level back in 2015 when it saw that wave of horrific terrorist attacks shara thanks for taking us through all the larger correspondent in france charlotte dubin ski or we got insight into the tense situation right now in the country from local analysts and commentators. the government doesn't know how to handle this situation this is nothing new there are 10 more 10 times more attacks against christian symbols in france than there are going to serve muslims for example not are there more attacks against persons but their kit attacks against chattels against purges are this is something which is not nearly catholics before tonight's incident we're already organizing and this is the 1st time i see this their own self-defense groups there are places there are obvious as i said before around you want another 1000 france where active duty christian statements are hell and the government just doesn't do anything and then all of a sudden we've got these birds and we've got these attacks if you know that pretty about in a communication is a catastrophe it is totally not there are there is i think that is the major issue as i charlotte ski in paris to discuss this further charlottes could you tell us more about the ceremony please. well a solemn ceremony taking place on wednesday evening here in paris for that teacher samuel party who's brutally assassinated on friday of last week some 400 people in attendance at that ceremony q.b. former and present ministers of france president marc korn paid tribute to some a party who was given the. the legion of honor for his work as a teacher describing 1 him as a man who was creating good citizens of the republic of france and he said that he was killed by a lone wolf and he said that some your party was now the face of the republic the face for the fight for freedom. with murdered for the very reason that the values of the french republic he was killed because islamists want to destroy our future and. they will not prevail samuel was a victim of lies and conspiracy theories. of what we are on friday he became the fisa public and our desire to bring down terrorists. to live like a community. exists. well that tribute to some new party came as we learned more information about some of those who are being detained at the moment in connection with that terror attack last friday when the stand to mine is amongst those 14 the 15 year old who is said to have told the assailant to samuel patty was describing him and then waiting with the 18 year old attacker off to school pointing out the teacher mr purdie they were given 300 euros for that information that led to the brutal beheading of some your party now this has opened. a can of worms here in france over this question of freedom of speech freedom of speech which is really cool to the identity of the french republic and while there have been more of people who want to go out to defend that right to their core there are others who are saying that they should perhaps be limits on freedom of speech and what people can say now this comes of course as the french state has launched a massive club down on organizations that they believe a link to is limits networks we've also seen the. arrests and raids of many people in the last few days here in france and the closure this evening of a mosque the mosque in panto which is just to the north of paris and that the altar on that mosque where we spent the day today was inducted for the sole purpose of preventing an act of terrorism now that's because the mosque on its facebook page actually published a video that incited hatred to watch the teacher samuel patton days before this death because he showed this controversial cartoons of the prophet mohammed to a class a civics class at the beginning of october now we spoke to some of those who were there to enact some of the final price before the mosque was closed many of those saying that they felt that this was a war now on is long they were afraid in particular $1.00 woman a 20 year old who didn't want to show her face on camera this is what they had to say. clearly i think close in the mosque is unjustified it punishes the whole community for the act of a single person who does not represent anybody it's said that we again been turnage by this kind of fact it's an excuse to make a who on islam who are against us muslims in general and against mosques even though we never condone such an act it is forbidden in our religion. there is no justification for cornish and 1300 worshippers all because of one person. on the mosque has been calm there were no problems there is a church nearby we have never had any problems between us. well there's also been some fear expressed from teachers who feel that if they continue teaching that same civics lesson as samuel party they too may face retribution in the future president was clear on wednesday evening as he gave that address at the small bone he said that this would continue those lessons would continue and that the french republic would not real back in the face of cartoons as we'll now all know this day we also know that those cartoons have been broadcast on the side of some images in france's controversial cartoons of the muslim prophet mohammed and the 13 french regions here in mainland france are publishing a book that will be put into all schools that will show all of those controversial political and religious cartoons the outlets have also been publishing is there is a real sense of defiance that they will not pass and they will not stop that sense of freedom of speech france we know a draft bill is due to be released towards december that will be the way that mark to deal with radical islamic political islam here fronts he talked about this bill being something to fight the foreign influence but of course for some your party the teacher who was beheaded last friday here france this comes too late. thank you for those details that are. speaking to us from paris. where so bring in our guests now and go live to damon wilson journalist and political communications advisor thank you for joining us on the program is great to see you france is clearly cracking down on suspected islamists in the wake of that murder last week how far do you think the government will go with this. well i think i'll go as far as mcallen thinks he's going to need to go to. to to settle to go he wants firstly is to keep the far right quiet marine le pen has ups the. rate of debate for her certain sure she she's looking for an opportunity. to make political. gains headed next year's presidential elections well it's an awful thing to do at a time of someone's someone's death and particularly in this in this way but unfortunately the way the politics worked but then also my home will also try and keep the public the public on side by closing down their own. deporting people who have been in prison for various offenses for. closing down the mosque and for safer speak if you know he's making. making such a lot more popular than he has been in recent times we've seen how france has been grappling with terrorism thing here is that if there are so many known extremists out that why when they arrested no longer god i mean is there a sense that this is too little too late. oh i do i think i do believe that's the case i mean if you can say it's not as if they couldn't see this coming and they'll create. the start of september when the child will have control again repeats of the threats against the publication. after remember they claimed responsibility for the death of of 12 people on the attack back in 2015. and that launched. a bloodbath with across france a loss of some time and took in not only charlie hebdo in the incidents around that time but also talking about a clan and. overall that was there it's $150.00 people lifted so to suddenly turning around and saying oh we're going to deport these these people in prison who we understand have extremist beliefs whatever that means and we're going to close this most randomly and i think because one of the one of the interview he said 1300 people that he needs he are being punished for the for the actions of one and seems all seems that it's irrational particularly the way that these these run is happening now that. it's not far and wide and no one really knows who they're looking for what they're looking for i like you just said that most has been shut down for allegedly inciting the killing and the was supposed as we heard in charlotte's report they feel that be unfairly targeted for something bad nothing to do with while still here. well i think they have a case i mean. it's if they shut the church down the road for the behavior of one person alone that i'd be surprised about our probably be a bit annoyed also. it's obviously the mosque is a symbol of. of their religion and why by closing that they are you know basically pointing the finger at the religion when it's not islamic as such it's islam islam which we're looking at so i can understand the anger on behalf of others most people who attend that mosque president mccrum has said that hundreds of all guys ations have been shut down over the past 3 years i've led to extremist links and yet that still wasn't enough to stop the latest terrorist attack so is this just the tip of the iceberg well he did it he'll say we're going to say that this. chechen who killed some your party was a a lone wolf but in fact i don't think that's really i think that simplifies the cas

charlotte dubin skewes been following developments for the last number of hours for us charlotte a gun attack on a priest in the middle of the day in a busy city what more is emerging about what happened there. well actually we're getting in the last few minutes that a suspect has apparently been apprehended there just to be clear you know and this is a suspect we do not know that this is actually the perpetrator behind that attack that took place around 4 pm local time in france what happened that we know is that a greek orthodox priest was closing up the church for the evening when he was approached by a man he described to police as being of somebody who looked like they were from the mediterranean so perhaps darker skin was quite tall about 1.9 meters tall so about 6 foot 2 and was wearing what appeared to be a black trench coat and a black hat now that individual apparently had sworn off shotgun and used that to fire at the orthodox priest now we have heard from eyewitnesses that they heard 2 gunshots fired and then they heard cries calling out now medics were able to attend the scene and to treat the priest for his injuries at the scene in the 7th month of leon and he was later conveyed to hospital we understand his condition is said to be serious but obviously he has been able to provide a brief description to the police of his attacker and he's also said that the attacker was and known to him prior to this incident you mentioned this took place in leon yes leon a busy city a big city in the center of france but obviously at the moment most people are. if you will not even curfew we're under lockdown here in france the 2nd lockdown now in the last few months so police have been at the scene there was this manhunt that's being carried out as i mentioned an individual has been apprehended we understand that person was apprehended in the hour on the small of leone which is just to the north of where this incident took place the individual who was taken in by the security forces is said to have no fixed abode and was in our restaurant to combat restaurant but it's not yet confirmed if this is the perpetrator of this attack on the priest now there's no details as to why this attack took place but this comes in the context when religious sites christian sites are considered to be a target of the moment for terror attacks just a few days ago we saw the unfolding brutal attack that happened in the south of france in the city of nice where 3 people lost their lives one woman almost entirely beheaded a man who worked for the basilica the not to dump a celica where this took place had his throat cut and another woman died of her wounds after raising the alarm let's just take her mind what unfolded in nice. thing as. much of this new tragedy to do you see victims of this mahmoud fascism repeated sting and. through the siren of the police arrived. everything that. they set up a security which is i went on with my scooter and i saw the guy coming take refuge at the cathedral afterwards i heard a lot of gunshots. well since that attack in nice place on thursday the terror alert in france has been raised now to the maximum level we heard from president that extra security forces are being deployed to try and shore up areas such as schools and of course churches because as i mentioned there was a threat that specifically mentioned religious sites that threat came from the thought but agency which is close to the terror network of al qaeda that threat now been in place for a couple of days so france at a maximum terror alert threat with this increased security personnel and the french prime minister has been talking about that saying that people can count on the nation to allow them to practice religion in full safety now the reality is that while they may be these extra few 1000 security personnel now on the ground there to protect france they can't be everywhere all at once and i was just looking at some of the figures for how many churches there are here in france and according to the religious heritage observatory there are around $45000.00 catholic churches in france that's not including the other churches such as the greek orthodox church which is the one that we're talking about this evening just to bring you back on that a greek orthodox priest has been shot in leon we understand that a suspect has been arrested the priest is in hospital in a serious condition and for the moment the area is cool. and off with police telling people not to go near it bringing us the very latest details on this breaking news story in our charlotte dubin ski from the french capital. of this shooting in leon comes 2 days after a knife attack in charlotte was going through 3 people killed slade there a 3rd man has been arrested by french counterterrorism officers on suspicion of links to the perpetrator prosecutors are trying to establish whether the suspected killer was in contact with extremist islamic groups his family in tunisia they've also come under scrutiny they deny any involvement in the murders. how do you get them i started crying when he told me that he traveled to france and i asked him about what drove him to go and he doesn't speak the language or even though anyone there asked his brothers to call him and his phone was switched off and we tried to call him repeatedly but his phone was switched off until the day came when suddenly we were raided by the police we were all taken for interrogation we do know what happened i lost my son and i lost my life and i demanded charlotte bin ski joins us from paris good afternoon charlotte what more then do we know about this case because as we've heard the details of the killing himself of being released yes that's right the national antiterrorism prosecuting him fronts has been putting new details about what exactly happened in the days leading up to that brutal capitation of 47 year old history teacher who's been named as a samuel patty now the assailant as you mentioned that who was shot dead after decapitating teach at is an 18 year old of chechen origin was born in moscow he had refugee status here in france and was apparently not prepared is the known to the intelligence service now we do understand that in the ellis leading up to that atrocity he went to the school and asked people to point out some real patty warts so it does appear that he didn't know the victim himself beforehand we also heard from the national antiterrorism prosecutor about the tweet that was released by the attacker just off to that decapitation at healing read out what that tweet said we were able to verify that ourselves earlier on saturday at the tweet said i executed one of your hellhounds dead to belittle mohammed that's a direct quote from the anti terrorism prosecutor now he also outlined the details of the individuals who've been arrested in connection with this terror attack they into the parents and grandparents of the younger brother of the 18 year old. saillant and also a parent of a student 2 had apparently posted that here on facebook in the last few weeks calling for the teach it to be dismissed as a result of showing those characters of the prophet mohammed the muslim prophet to do it because for him and we end this stand that in the days leading up to this decapitation there were many threats that were being made against at the 47 year old teacher we've been speaking to some of the parents all children who are also 'd in central patti's costs and they said that students who given the option to leave brought in stay until. he asked muslim children to raise their hand and leave the classroom the plot he did it my son told me he didn't do it to discriminate or to hurt he did it to preserve the children to not show them he explained i'd prefer if you left us with you because i'm going to show a cartoon of the prophet of islam because i don't want to shockey caricatural and i think you see where it was an attack here normal and nothing ever happens here and now would teachers been decapitated our children non-sale we don't know what to do with your argument that well the reaction has been shock and horrify here the front 7 about this brutal attack on a teacher now the rector of the great great mosque here in paris has said that he was horrified by what's happened and he said that condemnation just isn't enough any rule that action needed to be taken and also it was culmination from the a moment the great mosque in 4 days he described this as ringback being the final behavior and not that of a muslim. whatever the thought the belief even the insult the caricature of the other nothing justifies the fact of killing the so it is a mortal capital sin to kill a person like that to cut his throat like that all because it showed caricaturists of the prophet. well there have been there been 2 terror attacks here in france in the last 3 weeks and both of those attacks related to the images of the slim profit and it come this france is trying to do you the issue of separatism here now present medical an outline what he wants to do with the draft you'll be presenting it before the end of 2020 he said that france would fight back against any form of separatism and that end any deviation away from france's secular values wouldn't be tolerated he talked about liberating from foreign influences we know that dr drew is going to close a scrutiny or schools and associations serve religious communities and that arabic will now be true in mainstream schools rather than in mosques that law is sent to you by the end of the year but it comes as polls have been giving us and in planning all walked many muslims feel one poll recently showed that almost sweet quarters of those who responded who are under the age of $25.00 said that they would put their religion above that of the republic this attack has unleashed a huge fear now particularly amongst teaches you may have to give similar classes to that of several patty when they talking about freedom of speech and they wonder now if they too are in the firing line through doing that and this is even raised more questions abound what's being done at the moment when it is actually enough to prevent this sort of radicalization that leads to such extreme brutality. ok thank you charlotte mashallah been ski there with more details there from paris where i think we can show you live pictures now of the same of the attack and many people there have been laying flowers where the attack unfolded you can see quite a crowd there already today no cause to say the instant shows had to mock. see is under threat in france. for human human madness that's where we are today in france it's unfortunate just a lesson just a caricature frankly it's hard to imagine that someone could do it just for that a drawing a simple drawing if we can no longer see what we want to see for democracy has been crushed by religion by politics. this really it's really just it's a pity that the attacker was killed because he should have been judged for his actions and it's a pity that we can no longer teaches we wish and enjoy freedom of speech every time there is this kind of reprisal it's related to religion and that's a problem in a secular country where right from political analyst eric the charlotte alter, george osborn and ian bremmer. charlotte, you spent a lot of time reporting on, talking to and listening to trump voters. and what is the thing that most surprised you when talking to them when you would ask them about, you know, what was happening with covid or what was happening with the way trump was handling the economy? what is the thing that surprised you? >> so, yeah, i spent about three weeks going through wisconsin, michigan and pennsylvania, which as you mentioned before, are the states that tipped the election to trump in 2016. and when i would talk to voters who said that they had voted for trump last time and planned to vote for him again, i would often bring up questions about covid. do you think the president could have done a better job? you know, do you think that fewer people would be dead if he responded faster? and one of the things that i kept noticing was that people kept repeating things that were false, like, for example, qanon conspiracy theories or the idea that covid is a hoax and kept dismissing things that are true. i began to think of this mentality as a sort of unlogic. it was a world view that was rooted in conspiracy and misinformation and falsehood and in drawing conclusions and assumptions based on ideas that were not true. and that was one of the things that was most alarming, is that whenever i would bring up, for example, you know, more than 200,000 dead americans or, you know, the president being caught on tape intentionally downplaying the virus, the voters that i spoke to either didn't believe me or didn't care. >> ian, this sort of raises a larger issue that a number of people have written about, and you talk about it in your newsletter that i get, which is the power of a kind of minority rule in america right now, which is that the republican party has found a way to win power without winning majorities. so, i mean, the republicans, the presidential candidate over the last 20 years has only one time gotten a plurality of the popular vote, 2004 with george bush. more people vote for democrats in the senate, yet republicans hold a comfortable majority and so on. what does this mean for american political culture? >> it makes it more divisive. it delegitimizes it. it makes both sides feel like the system is rigged when the other is in charge. it's one of the things that has been good that biden has tried to continually say that he wants to be president of the red and the blue states. he is not disparaging trump voters. but much of the left is, and i think that's a real worry. i mean, if biden wins and wins big, they need to learn the lesson that for so many decades the working class in the united states and the white working class in the united states has felt like they have been treated like cannon fodder. that was true for 40 years of biden in the senate. it was true for eight years of biden as vice president. i mean, i am still stunned that there are so many people on the left that would never disparage blacks or hispanics or muslims and they are completely comfortable mocking rural working whites. in 2020, and i think that especially because coronavirus is going to hit that group so much harder in 2021, that it hits you and me and those on the panel, they are going to be so much angrier that if we don't find a way to actually make america work for them, then the populism that you and george were talking about in the last segment is going to get sharper in the united states. >> charlottee go back to you for a second on that point because i agree with ian. i have written about this in my book. the inequality is going to get much, much worse. and when you talk to trump voters and you would talk about inequality, you talk about how maybe tax cuts have helped the rich more than the poor or the billionaires are doing well, would that resonate with these much, much poorer, working, lower middle class or working class people? >> so the truth is that i think people have made up their mind. the cake is baked. you know, i did talk to people who felt like their taxes went down a little bit under trump. i talked to a lot of people who are voting for him again because they feel like he's done well by the economy. they feel like the economy has been much stronger under him even for them. and i'm not talking to people who are billionaires on this trip. but more broadly, you know, the trend persisted where when i would bring up facts about who really benefitted the most from the tax

charlotte you can see in paris for the details on that charlotte what did present mccrone have to say exactly. well this has being the long awaited how the french government would seek. to defend the country's secular values against radical islam president back on friday has set out his stall. islam is a religion that is in crisis today all over the world we don't just see it in africa it is a deep crisis that is linked to tensions between fundamentalism be civically between religious and political projects that says we have seen lead to radicalism even in countries where islam is the majority religion. well the draft glory's due to be presented in december and it will seek to strengthen the secularism here isn't here in france now present much talked about france liberating is from foreign influences and some of the ways it intends to do this with this law will be for example more oversight in how mosques here or funded there will be stricter scrutiny of schools and associations that so religious communities and when it comes to home schooling which is quite popular amongst islamic communities here that will only be allowed for health reasons now immediately following that statement there was a theory of reaction on social media with many people crying speech. the destruction of france has been written by the hands of the president of france crown how's islam in crisis all over the world today do you realize as the leader of a nation the ramification of your words especially on french citizens who follow islam mccann's latest comment on crisis and islam is nothing other than a shill to the crisis in europe of their identity and liberalism. on the other hand many people feel that this is needed to stop a slide away from francis. secular values it has forced the country in the last few years with the terror attacks that france is seen to take stock of what its core republican values are and some of the things that have come out have been concerning to many french people for example a recent poll found that 3 quarters almost 3 quarters of the young muslims under the age of 25 thought that their values of is more important than the french republic and that really worried many people just in the last week we saw fresh terror attack here in paris and the man who carried out that attack did so because he was unhappy with the satirical magazine charlie we publishing controversial cartoons of the muslim prophet mohammed and in the last month we saw divisions widened again when m.p.'s walked out of a parliamentary sitting including m.p.'s from mcdonald's party because they were unhappy that somebody in that city was wearing a muslim headscarf the reality is that people are also suggesting that this speech has got a lot of politicking about it where less than 2 years away from the next french presidential election and some people are suggesting that maccan could be looking to shore up perhaps more conservative leaning voters the reality is this has been long awaited it's been talked about for at least 7 months since mark on talked about it early in february of this year and the idea of islam and how that sits with those values of secularism in the french republic is a thorny issue will this stir the debate or will it settle it well that's yet to be seen. artie's charlotte devinsky reporting live from paris thank you. the regional authorities in madrid have launched a legal challenge against the spanish government's new lockdown order to filed an appeal in the national court claiming that the measures violate local laws on self rule will cause unnecessary economic harm the madrid area has one of the highest corona virus infection rates in spain and the health minister insists the shutdown is unavoidable. ok what i can tell you is that we have to act with determination to take control of the pandemic in the majeed region and this is the most important thing we have to do in this moment because health comes 1st. we believe this document contains decisions that concern the entire national health system and above all the fundamental rights and freedoms of millions of people the minister is imposing measures that go against the will of many citizens. under the new restrictions residents in madrid will not be allowed to leave the area unless they have to make

charlotte alter found when she hit the road to speak to voters in wisconsin, pennsylvania, around michigan. conspiracy theories form the views of moany voters. charlotte is back to tell us her findings. this sounds like a scary road trip. >> yeah. it was unsettling to be traveling in these -- the districts that are going to swing this election and, you know, be seeing the news that's happening and talking to voters on the ground and hearing basically they didn't really believe or didn't care what was being reported in the news. >> i say there was unlogic. pu we will put your definition on screen. what is that? >> so, the way to think about it is that logic is sort of like the mental leap between things that are known to be factually true. your rooting, your world view, rooting your reality in things established to be fact and real. unlogic, i came to think, unlogic is when you are rooting your reality in things that are not true. when you're taking conspiracy theories or, you know, dubiously sourced suspicions and orienting your entire world view around those ideas. >> this is why when president trump says at a town hall, i don't know anything about qanon, but i know they are against pedophilia, he is giving permission for these folks to believe the craziest, scariest theories, and then have a lot of unlogic. so, charlotteso far beyond fact-checking. that's what i hear you saying. >> yeah, because it's not about people, you know, believing something that's not true and then seeing that it's been corrected and then thinking, huh, i guess i was wrong about that. it's people's whose entire world view, entire way of looking at the world is rooted in this opposition to authority, this opposition to fact-checking, this opposition to verification. so there is no way to puncture that because when you present opposing evidence, it's too challenging to their world view. so they just kind of end up dismissing it. >> thank you for the warning. thank you for being here. read her columns about this at time.com. up next on "reliable source," andrew sullivan, he is joining me in just a moment. like the "visit a doctor anywhere our rv takes us" plan. and the "zero copays means more money for rumba lessons" plan. find the right plan for you from unitedhealthcare. get medicare with more. find the right plan for you from u
