our charlotte huffman is live outside the atlantic care regional medical center in atlantic city with the very latest, charlotte. >> reporter: chris, i just got off the phone with the police chief here in pleasantville. he said segal is in serious condition at the hospital. he is recovering from surgery. police are waiting for him to wake up so they can question him as to exactly what happened. >> we received 911 calls of shots fired in the area. >> reporter: this morning police responded to the pleasantville home of segal whose real name is dwight grant. >> shell casings, and ammunition found outside but when we, got to the house mr. grant was in the house, so at this point we don't know if the shooting took place outside and then he went in or if the shooting took place in the house. >> reporter: police do know around 9:30 there was an altercation. >> whether it happened before or after we do not know. that why is we're hoping that mr. grant is able to speak to us and give us an account of what happened. >> reporter: police say segal's brother-in-law, was minorly injured. he has num

"eyewitness news" investigative reporter charlotte huffman doug through court records to learn more abouthe man behind the killing spree. >>> most recent photo of iraqi war veteran doesn't imply a troubled past but court records show a different record. the handful of dui's, the first if 2001. in 2003 he was back in court pleading guilty to another dui. last year, same story. stone plead guilty to a dui after crashing his car. the sergeant with the marine corps reserve served about eight years until being discharged in 2011. his service includes 2008 combat tore in iraq where he was injured. court documents also show as of last year, stone was continuing treatment at the va medical center for ptsd and related conditions and then there's evidence of a financial strugg struggle. in january, stone was unable to pay 5,000 in court fines and a physician deemed him unemployable and totally disabled as a result of ptsd. court documents also show a custody battle with ex-wife and shooting victim nicole stone in the week leading up to yesterday's killing spree. at stake the couple's five and eight

lets begin with "eyewitness news" reporter charlotte huffman. >> reporter: shooting spree started just before 4:00 o'clock at an apartment at the pheasant run complex, in lower salford where police found two exterior bullet holes and one dead, inside. neighbors say that stone's ex-wife, lives inside of the apartment. >> it really is devastating. young girl. >> reporter: , residents told cbs-3's steve paterson that the couple had an ongoing custody dispute. >> i heard four gunshots and i heard the kid screaming, mommy, we want mom, mom. i opened my window and asked him if everything was okay. he just looked at me and said she's hurt, hurt pretty bad, we have got to go. >> the kids were kicking and screaming. he was tracking the oldest and pulling the youngest by her hand, threw them in the car and took off. >> reporter: half an hour later police received a call of the second shooting at this home on the 100 block of west fifth street in lansdale, inside, two people were found dead. then around 8:00 police fund more victims at a home near garfield and franklin streets in souderton. it is
