i want to turn back to the situation in charlottesville, virginia. this whole tragedy started because white nationalists took the streets in from test and the scheduled removal of the statue of general robert e. lee and the petition came from a young african-american high school student more than a year ago. our next guest was instrumental in taking up their cause. charlottesville vice mayor wes bellamy joining me now. it's good to see you. i know your city is reeling from what's taken place there in the last couple of days and i thank you for taking the time out to talk to us. why did you take up this cause and after yesterday, how do you feel about making that decision to remove that statue of robert e. lee? >> i need to correct you on one thing. for one, thank you for having me and before i begin, i must express my sincere condolences to the families of those who have lost their loved ones. we have seen individuals commit, in my opinion, acts of terror, domestic terrorism and now we have families who will not be able to hug their loved ones becaus

over the course of the last 24 hours, we have seen protests on the streets of charlottesville, virginia, where members of the alt-right, white nationalists, many would call white supremacists have been out. you're looking at pictures of those torches i just mentioned right now, at the university of virginia right now, protesting the removal of the statue of the confederate general in an area that has an ignoble history of slavery. those protests continued and were met with counterprotests from both the clergy, black lives matter activists, anti-fascist organizations and they devolved into violence, and then just late this afternoon, another incident, far more tragic, and potentially one that could have severe consequences, a car plowed into a group of those counterprotesters with what the images indicate are severe injuries for people that are there on the scene. maya rodriguez, nbc news producer, has been following this situation on the scene of that car crash. we don't know if that crash was a deadly one, but we do know that many were injured, correct? >> reporter: that's right, jacob

this is from charlottesville, virginia. you've seen video from early, just a couple of hours ago where it is clearly very, very tense. a state of emergency has been declared in that city after this violence broke out. it was at a rally held by white nationalists. counterprotesters showed up in large numbers. it happened as they were making their way to emancipation park where a noon eastern rally was planned. it was scheduled to protest the removal of a statue of the general robert e. lee. obviously tensions rose dramatically as these two groups faced off amid very mild police presence at the time. we saw water bottles flying back and forth, police were using tear gas to try to break up this crowd. baseball bats, sticks. we saw people struck. you just saw it right there for yourself, there have been injuries. we don't know the extent of the injuries. we know at least one police officer for the university of virginia injured there. the campus is just adjacent to right where all of this mayhem is under way. let's go to nbc's

hour that there was a virginia state police helicopter that crashed southwest of charlottesville, ande are hearing about the actual aircraft with the virginia state police, saying that there have been two confirmed fatalities. again, this happening in albore more oh county. the crash is under investigation. nbc has not independently verified the confirmation of two people losing their lives in this crash. but again, they said this happened shortly before 5:00 p.m. it happened in a wooded area outside of charlottesville, and this report from the virginia state police saying that there are two confirmed fatalities. no one on the ground was injured. and the cause of this crash remains under investigation at this time with state police on the scene. terry mcauliffe, the governor is going to be joined by other members of state and local agencies at this press conference coming up. and we would expect that this situation, this tragedy, will be addressed as we heard that the virginia state police had been using helicopters to patrol the protests and some of the incidents that were taking pla
