my mom is from chattanooga and my dad is from arkansas. this is the food i grew up eating. it was while i was researching that book on the history of soul food that african-americans who have cooked for our presidents started popping up in my research. once i finish that book, if i could find enough stories to cobble together a story about the presidential chefs, i'm going do it. i was able to do that and write this book. i'm a lawyer. this is not to disparage attorneys, but it just wasn't for me. i was going to open up a soul food restaurant in denver. then a law school classmate of mine called me up out of the blue and said, adrian, i'm working on this initiative in the white house. do you have any friends who might be interested working on this initiative? i'm in my office in denver. she's in d.c. tell me more about the initiative. it was called the initiative for one america. it was an outgrowth of president clinton's initiative on race which had this wild idea. if we talk to one another and listen, we might realize that we have a lot more in common than what divides us
