so ezekiel cheever was hearing cats. there are no rats at all. but there are all these transcriptions out there that say rats. we also encountered some other things. this is a piece in thomas putnam's handwriting and the traditional transcription of this is on the 15th may 1692, and i looked at it and went, i see a calendar, the 15th of may was a sunday. why would they do an examination on a sunday? they have better things to do. and then i looked at it again and i said i think that might be an 11. the 11th would be more appropriate. so then i went and searched for examples of the handwriting and look at that. two strokes, it is definitely a 5, and the unambiguous 1 in 1693, he just made little curly ones. so we were able to correct that date absolutely. but we had to make a case for everything that we did. when we were looking at the different -- sometimes we called them recorders, sometimes scribes, sometimes a hand. we couldn't come up with exactly what we were going to do. but i made a whole database that was available on line and we had exam
