i speak with ceo john chen about whether the square-screened model aimed toward business customers can turn blackberry around. that is next. ♪ >> welcome back to the best of "bloomberg west." i am emily chang. as we mentioned, blackberry has just unveiled its newest smartphone, the passport, which as ceo john chen claimed, does not bend like the apple iphone. how many of these square-screen phones can blackberry sell? can it really help turn around the struggling company? i spoke with john chen and started by asking him why he opted for the square design. >> because we talked to the customers and they look at how they use the device and for productivity and looking at the new style apps, looking at the vertical apps and health care apps, we figure that the wider and more one-to-one aspect ratio is what everybody will need for achieving more. so that's how we came up with it. >> what's your goal for this phone? how many do you think you'll sell? >> i am not disclosing it right now, but we expect it to be successful. but the market will tell me that. we have various different ideas that

if we go back to what they are doing, chen has done a very good job.ment, what we're not clear about is it is like we're looking at e.r. center blackberry. you go in there. what has he done? like he plucked in a dialysis machine while waiting if a transplant. the problem with transplants is it is still largely a temporary fix. that would suggest his structure is two-fold. the other is he comes out and attached a pair of bionic hands to business which is great. that business would have a long way to go and be completely refreshed. i think he is getting it into a $5 billion it is now business. he is getting it into a shape where he has a fighting chance of growing it but in the end it will be in the shape that someone can buy. >> he is repositioning the business and looking for somebody to buy. i why would somebody buy it if there is a big enough market in business? is there a significant enough niche here that there is an asset that you would want to own? >> the key here and this is a bit of an irony to the whole story. he has to succeed with getting th

it can be done. >> senator, this is lanhee chen.take for us to see action on social security? we all know that it is a solvable problem. the disability trust fund is going bankrupt in 2015. what will it take to get lawmakers to the problem -- to the table to deal with the problem, given that we know the solution? >> i am cochairing the solution for the bipartisan policy center on retirement security. one of the things that you mentioned was tackling the reforms of social security in order to secure the solvency for the next 75 years. ours is a totally bipartisan commission cochaired by jim lockhart, who of course ran social security under george w. bush. we are working with a group that includes the public trustees of social security and we hope to come up in the spring of next year with the bipartisan comprehensive proposal to get social security secured for the next 75 years. you know, it's not that hard to do. >> if it isn't that hard to do, why couldn't bowls simpson or the supercommittee do it? as pointed out, we know all the o

the ceo john chen will be speaking to cnbc post earnings.ill be on squawk alley at 11:00 a.m. eastern. bringing in the equity analyst at s&p capital i.q. to get a look at what investors can expect when quarterback does report earnings, angelo, what do you think about this? will we see that turn around that john chen has been promising investors? >> well, not yet. i mean, when you look at the most recent results, i think the key here is, you know, three things, really. one is how does the business model look relative to prior quarters? john chen has done a great job, we believe, with really cutting down the costs. it will be interesting to kind of see if they -- they slow down some of the cash burn that we've seen in recenters. that's going to be the first key. the second key is going to be on the hardware side of things. have they done enough here where they've stabilized the hardware business and can we see some sort of pick up here in the coming quarters. and then the third and final thing is going to be any talk on new product branch, esp
