well, karen chen is going for the gold at the winter olympics. and with the constant spotlight, the public has had a chance to hear about her life as an athlete, but we sat down with her backstage at the recent kristi yamaguchi golden moment show to talk about the more personal side of her journey. robert: and we are here with karen chen. karen, welcome to "asian pacific america." karen chen: thank you for having me. robert: thank you for doing this. you have become a very high profile public figure skater because of your success recently. has it made it--has it been a tough thing to do, like, interviews and be in the public eye so much? karen: yes, for sure. it took a while to get used to. and being a shy kid growing up, it was kind of hard for me to i guess open up and really socialize. but i feel like with skating, skating was kind of my way to express myself on ice, and that really helped me open up and, you know, with all these really great opportunities. robert: now, you grew up in fremont. karen: yes. robert: and i think there was another

this morning fremont's karen chen sits at tenth place after her figure skating debut. she and other american competitors had a few stumbles. garvin thomas joins us live in south korea. >> garvin, you talked to karen chen overnight. first, though, a different group of american athletes made history less than three hours ago. >> reporter: that's right. marcus, you know, there has been a lot of talk at these games about the lack of medals that team u.s.a. has been winning. well, we just pulled a gold out overnight from the most unexpected of places. how unexpected? well, the united states had never won a gold medal in the sport of cross-country. well, that is until now. the women's team sprint competition came down to the wire. will m a photo finish with the u.s. team of jesse diggins and keeken randall pulling it off. a medal might be out of reach for karen chen after the short program in the women's figure skating. the 18-year-old is in tenth place. all three americans stumbled during their program, chen having trouble with her opening combination, one she said she nail
