natasha chen, cnn, atlanta. >>> the first sentencing of a u.s.itol rioter is set for later this week. it's been more than five months since a crowd of pro-trump rioters stormed the building trying to stop congress from certifying joe biden's election. since then hundreds have been charged in connection with the attack. marshall cohen reports it could be months or years before their cases are wrapped up. >> reporter: we are just a few days away from the first capitol rioter getting sentenced. it's been more than five months since january 6th and nearly 500 people have been charged. the defendants come from all across america, 43 states and washington, d.c. they're from big cities and small towns, include people that flew here on private jets and others that scraped together the money to pay for gas. now a few of these defendants have already pleaded guilty and later this week, one of them will be sentenced, anna morgan lloyd. back on the day of the attack january 6th she posted online it was the best day ever. now she's singing a different tune, a

major. >> nancy chen, thank you. turning to the troubling surge of gun violence. video from atlanta. a mall security guard confronted two people in masks on sunday, one fired his gun. tonight the guard is in critical condition. two 15-year-olds are under arrest. meanwhile, in austin, texas, 14 people shot saturday morning, one died in one of ten mass shootings across seven states this past weekend. tonight much of the country is sizzling, dozens of records falling with triple-digit temperatures from california to texas. lonnie quinn joins us with a a very hot forecast, lonnie. >> reporter: oh, you better believe it. major, when you look at california from the southwest that's when you'd expect to find the big searing heat this time of the year, but it has bubbled up all the way into montana. it was almost as hot in montana as new mexico. billings was 101, 102 in albuquerque and the heat will intensify for the day tomorrow. billings, 107 record, salt lake will at this time 105, and ifisd they hit that that will tie the hottest record for the hottest june day ever.

cnn's natasha chen is following this story. how did all of this play out? said those two to three minutes felt like years. it was very disturbing to the passengers onboard who were hearing this yelling and screaming and not knowing what was going on. she said that about an hour into the flight this man started yelling stop the plane, stop the plane and started banging on the cockpit doors. within 30 seconds another passenger got up, tapped another passenger and the two of them helped take him down with the help of the flight crew as well. here's what she told me about that experience. >> i'm so frortunate that there were so many people onboard that were ready to jump into action and be the people we needed because there's so many different situations that could have gone poorly. and i mean, i don't even want to sound so dramatically but i feel very lucky to be alive. like when i got on the ground i called my family and i couldn't believe what i was telling them. >> the plane diverted to albuquerque, new mexico, where the man was taken into federal custody.

cnn's natasha chen is following the developments from florida. the ft. lauderdale police issued a new statement about 15, 20 minutes ago. they did not use the word accident, but they did describe what happened as certainly is unfortunate. this all happened on the street behind us where the parade was being set up. it was getting ready to go around 7:00 p.m., and this white pickup truck, police say, was being driven by a 77-year-old man who had ailments preventing him from walking in the parade. so he was chosen to drive this car and to lead that particular group. and as the pickup truck was starting to move forward for the start of the parade, police say the truck suddenly accelerated, and that's when witnesses saw the truck actually go across the street, plowing into the garden center behind me. i'll step out this way so you can see the yellow tape right there. it just plowed through that business, which was at the time closed. i think only one employee, i'm told, was there at the time. but of course, that left two pedestrians struck in the midd

natasha chen has the details. >> reporter: we are on the border of fort lauderdale. along the parade route. it was supposed to be a joyous event that turned into tragedy. the police chief said now that they understand this is a tragic accident and not a criminal act directed at any one person or group of individuals. fort lauderdale police provided a statement giving a few more details about what happened. they said a 77-year-old man was in a white pickup truck. he was scheduled to drive that car in the parade procession. he was a participant but not planning to walk with the group. as he moved the car forward for the start of the parade, police say it suddenly accelerated unfortunately striking two pedestrians and plowing across the street into the garden center. of the two people who were hit, one died and the other is expected to survive. all those involved, the individuals and the driver, are a part of the fort lauderdale gay men's chorus. >> we were wondering who has done this. it seems now that those fears were not just -- it doesn't change the outcome. and we

natasha chen joins us now fro florida.bute to those victims? >> reporter: that moment shoot the entire central florida and really the whole nation's communities, especially the lgbtq community. outof orlando, one organization actually formed in response to that shooting. a walk down the street to the corner we can show you video of that, holding signs, waving rainbow flags and reading the names of the 49 victims killed five years ago today. just one of many events held throughout the week to remember them. one of the things that struck us in talking to the organizer today, is knowing that we are waking up today to more mass shootings, the ones you just mentioned. while she says that's very discourages, the hopefulness is that there are a lot of organizations that have sprung up and grown since pulse, especially lgbtq organizations building a network together. we spoke to the owner of pulse, is that the issue is people are resorting to violence to solve their problems. here's what she said. >> there's a gun violence problem

cnn's natasha chen has the details. >> victor and alisyn law enforcement agencies across the countrytruggling with similar problems of gun violence. as of june 16th the number of gun deaths in the u.s. so far this year, not including suicide is about 19% higher than at this point in 2020. and about 38% higher than this point in 2019. that's according to the gun violence archive, which also tracks mass shootings with at least four victims. just in the last week there have been about 20 mass shootings. in arizona on thursday, police say one gunman was linked to at least eight shootings, killing one person and injuring more than a dozen others. on thursday night, two separate metro detroit freeway shootings led to the death of a toddler and left a 9-year-old injured. in some cities special operations are underway to target the crime, like in miami-dade county where more officers will be patrolling trouble troubled areas and more attention on illegally operating businesses and venues where shootings happen. but one challenge is with vacancies on police force pg the tlapt police chief tol

cnn's natasha chen has more from surfside. >> reporter: we will continue search and rescue because wetill have hope that we will find people alive. >> but that hope is fleeting as crucial hours pass. >> if they are alive down there, like what's going on, like, you know, how afraid are they in there? is there a possibility they're alive? truthfully, look at this mess. what are the chances? >> reporter: officials say about 55 of the 136 units of the 12-story residential building in surfside collapsed early thursday morning. still no clue on a cause. search and rescue crews are working around the clock using heavy machinery, sonar, cameras and specially trained dogs to try to locate the missing in the rubble. >> you get lucky, you find them in a pocket and able to basically by hand remove the rubble. >> reporter: but those efforts are being met with new challenges, fires at the collapse site, as well as rising water and shifting materials. >> it then challenges the integrity of what is still standing there. and then that delicate balance of saving lives while risking lives. >> reporter:

natasha chen, our colleague, is with me now. you have been, sadly, from state to state covering mass shooting after mass shooting this year. and they are bracing for more. and you see this often happen in the summer, sadly. what are they preparing for? >> yeah, poppy. a lot of police departments across the country are dealing with similar issues. some of them launching special operations right now. perhaps putting more officers in troubled areas. but at the same time, they are still trying to hire more qualified officers in places like here in atlanta. there are more than 400 vacancies on the police force right now. at a recent public safety meeting this week, the assistant police chief was pressed by city council members on why this surge of violence is happening in the greater atlanta region. he said he didn't have an answer for that, but that's a conversation he's having with other law enforcement on daily calls from cities small and large across the u.s. from coast to coast, a plague of gun violence has cities on high alert.
