natasha chen is following the latest covid headlines from birmingham, alabama, one of the states laggingvaccinations and see ing covid cases spike. >> reporter: this is an ext extremely disturbing trend they're seeing, and unfortunately alabama is not alone in this. let's show you some maps to give you a sense of what's happening in the big picture here. if you look at the entire united states, the new cases in the past week compared to the previous week, all the states, all 50 states are seeing increases in alabama specifically. in the past week, new cases actually more than doubled compared to the previous week. and if you're looking at the number -- percentage of people vaccinated across the united states, you can see that in the northeast, a large percentage of those states are vaccinated. and in the southeast, that's where you're seeing some of the least vaccinated states, including alabama at about a third. 34%. and the coronavirus cases in alabama, if we could look at the seven-day average of daily change, you can see that there are a lot of orange, red spots there. so, not lookin

miami area have been evacuated over the past several days over new safety concerns, cnn's natasha chen is in surfside, florida, with the latest. natasha, this opens up really the entire site now for these rescue and recovery workers. are they already working there now in the wake of this demolition, and how much of a difference is it expected to make? >> well, jim, there is a bit of activity now. we do know that the search and rescue mission is back on after they temporarily paused for this demolition. you can see there's a crane in the background between the buildings. that's where we saw the rest of the standing champlain towers south up until 10:30 last night when that controlled blast brought it down. as you mentioned, they really wanted this to happen before the storm potentially comes through creating wind gusts and then picking up that concrete and debris threat potentially making that unstable structure fall in a direction that would have bee crew on the ground. so now that they are back searching, weens that this will allow them to search an area especially close to the remain

cnn's natasha chen is at a vaccination drive outside atlanta. are you seeing a number of people looking to be vaccinated, and what's bringing them out today and changing their minds? >> reporter: jessica, more than 200 people have come through to get vaccinated at this site in dekalb county, georgia, that's more than county officials expected. that's a good thing. there were people sort of skeptical in line about the vaccine but said it was the money being given out, $50 gift cards that brought them here. america is waking up to a new day of increased covid restrictions, president biden says we're likely to see more as cases of the highly contagious delta variant continue to rise. >> in all probability, by the way, had a good day yesterday, almost a million people got vaccinated, so i am hopeful people are beginning to realize ho how essential it is. >> they show the new rate of vaccinations the highest it has been in weeks. just under half the u.s. population is fully vaccinated. the fda says it is pulling in extra help to get covid-19 vaccines

cnn's natasha chen is in surfside for us. natasha, are search teams doing anything differently now with this storm approaching? >> reporter: alisyn, they are working as fast as they can, and they were very concerned that this storm might take down that building and make it fall the wrong way, so that is why there was such an urgent discussion about how to bring that building down in a controlled manner. that's what you saw there last night. it happened around 10:30 p.m. now, they got back to work very quickly. the rescue teams had paused for the engineers to prepare for that demolition, but once it was demolished, 20 minutes later, the mayor of surfside told us the search and rescue teams were back on that pile. they have been working all night, and of course they want to do as much as they can before any severe weather comes in. the good news being that that -- the worst of the weather seems to be going around this area and not directly at surfside. and of course, the mayor of miami dade county had to really reassure the pub

so cnn's natasha chen is following that story for us. natasha, you have some breaking news about what that school is now discussing. what have you learned? >> reporter: yeah, alisyn, just within the past hour, we got the update with the number of cases, as of this afternoon. as you mentioned, 14 total cases, more than a hundred students in quarantine. and now, the drew charter school behind us is discussing possibly having mandatory vaccination for staff. the head of school, peter mcknight, told me that about three quarters of the staff were -- are already vaccinated, but now there's discussion about whether to make that mandatory for all employees. now, of the positive test cases, only one of the staff members who tested positive was actually vaccinated. so one breakthrough case. we talked to a parent and his child who attends this school about the frustration of this happening, just a few days after school started on tuesday. here's what he said about quite a few having seen this coming. >> it's too early in the school year for this to

let's go right to cnn's natasha chen on the ground in surfside. so, natasha, sounds like a race against time. can a controlled implosion be pulled together that fast before monday. >> well, fred, the storm if it comes this way -- it's unclear where the path will take it. but if it comes through this area it might be late monday. and that is why there is a goal now to have the remaining part of the building demolished before then for safety reasons. the governor announced during the press conference once the greenlight is given this can happen within 36 hours, as early as tomorrow. and that is, again, for the safety of the people working on the site. and that's where i want to bring in captain ignatius carroll with miami fire and rescue florida task force two. what is it like right now? how much danger does your team feel working on the site, knowing there could be falling debris? and will it make the job easier once the build something done. >> the one thing with task force teams is they're used to responding to situations with a hazard. safety is

cnn's natasha chen is in birmingham. natasha, school starts there in just a matter of weeks.? >> reporter: well, fred, it's all about messaging right now. today, we are outside now of a vaccine clinic that happened at parker high school's gym. they just wrapped up. they told me that they actually vaccinated 107 people today. it doesn't sound like a huge number, but it is actually the highest they've had of any of their school-based clinics throughout the summer. now, with these school-based clinics, they probably reached several hundred people in the community, but imagine the school district tells me that in birmingham, they have 10,000 students grades 7 and up. so potentially 10,000 eligible students but only reached several hundred through these clinics. hopefully, some of them have gone to other providers to get the shot but what we're sensing from the health officials especially is that they're seeing a lot of pushback from people who have a lot of questions who are scared of getting the vaccine. we met one mother and daughter today who came and got vaccinated, both of t
