let's go straight to my colleague natasha chen who joins us in superior, colorado.it is snowing now. snow they could have used 24 hours ago to help fight those fires. how devastating is the damage? >> reporter: earlier today when it wasn't snowing yet, we could see down the hill from us. and when you look at those neighborhoods in superior, you could see the pockets of blocks where houses were completely leveled. you see burned out property lines. right next to homes that were just fine. and we were also seeing the same thing in lewisville, a nearby community, also experiencing real devastation from this event where we would see a burned out lot next to a house standing there still with christmas lights on. so that's an example of how precarious and random those wind gusts behaved. these were hurricane-force winds. we're talking about people who had sometimes hours but in some cases just a few minutes to really pack up the things that mattered to them most. we talked to one person who lives just down the hill. he had to put his children in the car and it took them 2

i want to go straight to cnn's natasha chen who has been covering this story. natasha, the thing that stood out more than anything when you heard the governor talk about the nearly 1,000 homes lost was the speed over which this occurred over a several hour period yesterday. >> reporter: yes, phil. these were hurricane force winds puck lick through neighborhoods. mogge those types of winds just bringing flames, you know, hitting one house after the next. we were in lewisville this morning taking a look at some of the burned out neighborhoods, and you can tell how precarious those winds were, because we'd see one lot that still had a hot spot and a flame going through it and the one next to it would still be fine so a very precare kwlous situation as the governor was saying, and some of the video people took on their february noam was the fact that we saw them ducking from debris and ash raining on them, and when they got into their cars it was very difficult to see. there was no visibility. it was hazy, like an orange sky real hindering their ability to get out

le let's begin with natasha chen on the ground with more. >> reporter: winds up to 105 miles an hour that blasted through two colorado communities thursday. >> i would estimate it is going to be at least 500 homes, would you not be surprised if it is a thousand. >> reporter: now just as 2021 is coming to an end, thousands of people in superior and louisville, colorado, have lost everything. >> we're on a group text, do we leave and stay, what is everybody doing, everybody is rushing around with their phones taking videos of their home and inside just in case. >> reporter: the full scope of the devastation is becoming clear from the air. >> we just witnessed incredible devastation around the town and then also witnessed houses just exploding right before our eyes. >> reporter: the fire spread rapidly over more than 6,000 acres, before 35,000 people have just hours and in some cases just minutes to evacuate. >> it was like a tornado. >> it looked like something i've only seen on apocalyptic. >> it runs on topography and winds and where there is shrubs and toler grasses where it entered

so let's take you out now to los angeles and that is where we find our natasha chen who is tracking the rising hospitalizations there. hi, natasha so what is the latest? >> reporter: yeah, pamela, hospitalizations haven't been this high since about early october but really we need to just look at the case numbers in los angeles county to see the real story here. case numbers have tripled just bn this past week. if you look at tuesday, la county public health reported about 1,100 positive test cases, by saturday, more 2,700, now over 3,500, so we haven't seen more than 3,000 since late august, early september and even mentioned today's numbers may be low because of the lag in weekend reporting so that's not even a full week and we've already seen that number triple. and now, la has been requiring proof of covid vaccination to enter places like restaurants sincerely november, but the state of california stepped it up recently starting december 15th. a set of new protocols because of the recent rise in cases, state-wide, it is required now to wear masks indoors and indoor setting and see i

cnn's natasha chen joins us with the latest. hundreds of criminal cases are now in jeopardy.ns as you mentioned because there are officers involved here who were either witnesses or arresting officers in cases spanning more than a decade, according to the "l.a. times." now, let's explain how this all started. first, in january of 2020, there were two torrance police officers accused of spray painting a swastika inside a vehicle that was part of the case they were working on and that precipitated a larger investigation into troubling communications among more officers that revealed these texts we're talking about. let's read to you some descriptions of some of the very troubling things that were discovered, including a photo of black men being lynched with a caption, hanging with the homies. a photo asking what someone should do if his girlfriend was having an affair with a black man. the caption, a taillight on his car so police will stop him and shoot him. there were offensive jokes about jewish people and threats of assault on members of the lgbtq community. the attorney ge

joining me now, ucsf infectious disease effort, doctor chen thank you for being on. >> my pleasure. thanks for having me on. >> we are seeing new cases in the u.s. and worldwide because of the omicron variant, we first heard about it few weeks ago, what do we know now about this variant that we've learned from new data? >> i think what we've learned is that the contagiousness is worse than we feared. it's likely somewhere between chicken pox, which is much more contagious than delta and measles which is one of the most contagius infectious meaning a lot of people will get infected in the next few weeks. just few hours we learned omicron is 73% of the isolated cases in the united states, this is rapid last time cdc gave the report it was at 3% so it's stepping on the accelerator so to speak. >> can we tell if omicron has a shorter incubation period than delta. i heard some saying it takes fewer days for omicron symptoms to manifest. >> yeah, so, so far the evidence shows it's faster onslaught so instead of five to seven days with regular variants including delta, omicron is three day

natasha chen is following this from los angeles. of people had complained about problems with the water recently talking about what they were ingesting. >> right. so, fred, the navy says they have gotten calls from neighbors talking about symptoms like nausea, vomiting, diarrhea and headaches and skin related conditions, people who may have been exposed to the contaminated water. on thursday the navy found a likely source of the contamination believed to be petroleum chemicals believed to be from the red hills well. they had isolated that well and then the board of water supply found out about that. just to give you a sense of what the navy is saying right now, let's show their statement. it says that the results of the red hill sample showed petroleum hydrocarbons roughly four to step times below the department of health protection level. they continued to say the navy is developing a plan to restore the potable water system to epa standards. identifying how the contaminant got in the well and fix the well. meantime, the board of w
