cnn's natasha chen is in santa monica. how are people coping?syn, they're doing the best they can. people had come out early this morning for their exercise morning run before the height of this heat and just over an hour ago california officials gave a press conference saying that rotating blackouts could be a possibility today. we are talking about being now in the heart of the heat event. they said this is the most extreme part with tomorrow possibly seeing a record-breaking demand on the energy grid, a record not broken since 2006. what's been working is asking californians to voluntarily conserve energy between the hours of 4 and 9:00 p.m. turning up the thermostat and turning off major appliances and that's been working because they said the last two evenings they've seen that there's been 2% less demand than expected but they actually need two to three times that conservation in order to avoid taking actions like rotating blackouts. woo he talked to some people here early at the beach today about their own conservation at home and the fac

let's go to los angeles now with cnn's natasha chen. she joins us with the details.e of california. >> yeah, boris. the one that we ar right now, the mill fire that you just mentioned is in the northern part of the state. it's burning near the oregon state line were found dead, one was age 66 and one is age 73, found within the city limits of weed, california that. fire has burned more than 4,200 acres, and currently within the past hour cal fire updated us that there are about 560 people still evacuated because of that fire. just imagine the conditions right now for dangerous explosive fire behavior. we're talking about record temperatures, some that haven't been seen in decades. if we look at the heat map there on sunday, already 45 places broke record temperatures. look at how many are along the coast that typically avoid excessive heat looking into the next week. more than 170 places are expected to potentially break record. if you look at the temperatures on sunday that were broken, a lot of triple digits, including a couple places on that list there, that haven

natasha chen is live for us in burbank, california welcome the latest.got the fire that is seemingly out of control. how are residents dealing with all of this and the conservation they have to do? >> reporter: as the governor said, we're not out of the woods yet. last night we narrowly avoided intentional rolling blackouts and that's partially because californians got this push alert when energy officials issued an alert level three. just after 5:00 p.m. local time. that's the last level before those intended rolling blackouts would have occurred. now, if you take a look at this graph of usage last night, this really shows how people responded to this because they got the push alerts, you see the alert went out and 30 minutes later, 5:50 p.m. pacific time, you see the usage really drop there. so people understood the danger of the potential rolling blackouts. that being said, tuesday did see the highest peak demand in california history. so that just goes to show the intensity of this record-breaking event, not just the temperature records being broken

cnn's natasha chen joins us live from just outside los angeles. dealing with the threat to the state's power supply? >> well, jake, they've been pretty cooperative. we are talking about the eighth day in a row that californians have been asked to turn off between 8:00 and 9:00 p.m. and turning it off during the peak hours when demand is high and that seemed to work, actually on tuesday as you were mentioning. this was the highest peak demand reported in state history and everyone got these text alerts that we can show you on screen saying that we're at this level just below having to potentially use these rolling blackouts and people really responded to that. the demand dropped off after those alerts went out. we toured this burbank power plant behind us just to get a sense of what they've been dealing with. this unit behind us has been running 24/7. there's one that's typically only used when needed and now running 16 hours a day and because of the cumulative effect of this heat wave and not having much cooling overnight, their equipment also has
