that was all dick cheney.hen we assess the political ideology of george bush, who is not conservative, not really, not in the ronald reagan way where you want smaller government -- ronald reagan actually argued for smaller government. nothing george bush did argued for smaller government. in fact the federal budget increased more under george w. bush than any other president in history. and bush was not a neo-conservative. there were a lot of neo-conservatives in his administration, but he was not one of them. the only real connection that george bush had to ronald reagan was on taxation. bush championed tax reductions. he got them. bush had no problem with an activist government that worked with faith-based groups to build a moral and civil society. what was george bush's political ideology? it is exactly what you saw. a man who sought to improve citizens' lives using the compass of his born again christianity combined with the resources of the federal government. his outlook on life was most visible through

he was very critical as you noted of cheney. this was one man who had one view of the vice presidency and dick cheney had another view of the vice presidency. he also i thought to his credit, he said that the president was ultimately responsible. he held his son to account for this hawkish tone that he thought actually misrepresented what his son truly believed. >> what do you mean he misrepresented? what did he think his son was up to when he went into iraq? >> the context of these remarks was about -- more about the second term than the first term. and my own sense is that while president bush 41 had anxieties about the first -- second iraq war, that he believe -- and held his son to account for the phrase axis of evil. he said that that's a phrase that will probably be proven not to be historically benefitting anything. he was more concerned -- he was closer on the substance than on the style of the administration. he held cheney as the chief figure who seemed to make the administration appear more hawkish than bush 41 himsel

there have been additional reactions from rumsfeld, cheney.t what things have occurred since the book came out, whether they surprised you are not? i did go to everybody. i think cheney has been a great sport, he has been gentle many about it. proud iron-ass. [laughter] if you are dick cheney given what a lot of us have reported and followed, it puts him back into the center of the conversation in a way he had not been in the past couple of years. rumsfeld, i think he proved the point. on the record, he declined to comment. we had two conversations about what bush had said about him. to me, he did not want to comment. his statement was that president bush is getting up in years. the problem is that bush's comments about his being moreant, iron-ass, comments made first in 2008 and then repeated again over several years. think rumsfeld is passive aggressive. on reaction puts a cap are what has been a great rivalry in modern american politics. mark: let's unpack this thing that got a lot of attention, bush 41 says, from where i sat, cheney and ru

what are your thoughts now on the public criticism of dick cheney and donald rumsfeld? >> well, there's no doubt that the elder bush did not think we should go into iraq, but obviously he didn't want to tell his son directly. in fact, in the book he basically says, you know, he made his own decisions because brent skoal kroft, who was the bush sr.'s national security adviser wrote an op-ed in the "wall street journal" about six months before the war saying it was a big mistake. the fact is he wouldn't have done that without checking with the elder. i think that the elder bush had recommended cheney as vice president because he was very happy with him when he was his secretary of defense. but then he saw the way he was acting, and i think he believed quite correctly he had too much influence on his son and, of course, rumsfeld, who he had worked with going back to the administration of richard nixon, he never did think much of him. basically he thought he was just -- i won't use the term he used in the book, but just too hard over on the issues about using force. >> do y
