what is the message from cheri beasley and budd? >> this is a community with republicans and democrats and unaffiliated voters. many are planning to vote split ticket. they don't have affinity for either party right now. cheri beasley, the democrats closing message, she is going to be an independent democrat. she breaks with the biden administration and is for lowering cost and managing inflation and fighting for abortion rights and trying to codify row roe. and for ted budd, you should vote for him if you want to send a message to the biden administration. you want a change. he has really taken the economy and inflation to connect with voters who are worried about the cost of living right now. wily nichol, the democrat who is running in the tight congressional race, is here shaking hands and talking to voters. in this area of the state, people are really looking for the voters who might be crossing lines, who are going to think about this very big picture, who are going to be much more issues-focused, than party-focused. this distr

will it be enough to lift impasse cheri beasley?ace. the democrat maura healey is the projected winner in massachusetts. this is a pick up for the democratic party in terms of governors races. the previous republican governor elected not to not to run for reelection. jeff diehl was the republican challenger here. neither isn't a comment, but this is a pick up for the massachusetts governor's race. chris hayes, go ahead. >> i wanted to mention, go back to new hampshire look at their own numbers another one a comparisons, that's a common not and comment. that does something with kemp and her shock. or you have camp running at walker would six or seven points. looks five or six points, bolduc, chris sununu, they desperately wanted him to run for the senate race, he's very popular. we projected him as a winner tonight, again, he called trump stunts. he disavowed although election denialism. he's going to run considerably higher then balled up. one of the themes we're seeing in the early data here is that there is a tax on a general elec

north carolina cheri beasley at 52% to ted budd's 46.3%. you heard that breakdown about where the votes are out. there is reason for the budd campaign to potentially be optimistic here. we will be sticking close all night. 55% of the vote in there. now let's go to ohio where tim ryan is out to an early lead, 56.9% to j.d. vance's 43%. but it is still extremely early in ohio. this is a state that has trended very red in recent years. 29% of the vote in in ohio. now let's go to new hampshire where maggie hassan is sitting at 67% to don bolduc's 38.2%. democrats in new hampshire telling me they feel very good about where maggie hassan is at this hour. of course, extremely early, just 14.9% of the vote has been counted in new hampshire. but now let's check in on pennsylvania because we can compare these numbers here to what boris told us in the governor's race. john fetterman at 80.1 to mehmet oz's 17.9%. obviously, the race is going to end closer than where it stands now, but shapiro is sitting at 84.5%. he is the democratic candidate for gove

cheri beasley was just here in rocky mount. at a supposed and behind me here really trying to get voters these last couple of days to not just get themselves to the polls but particularly to target young people. you know, the group of people who in many cases are most worried about access to abortion here in the state. try to remind them of the importance of the midterm and get them to the polls right now. because a very low proportion of them appropriate just updated in the last several days of early voting. and for democrats, that is a big part of their coalition. and cheri beasley has been trying to run a sort of unique campaign, yasmin, where instead of doing with democrats really do in the state, just getting her numbers up in the main urban centers, she has been in small communities like this one, in rural areas, talking to people who haven't voted you felt left behind, and really trying to convince them that she is the person to get this job done. take a listen to the conversation that i sat with her. >> hopefully we can

stacey abrams, sherry breezily -- cheri beasley, val demings, mandela barnes -- is the nation doing enough black candidates right now? >> am grateful because this is a state that is the state of frederick douglass and harriet tubman and thurgood marshall, but it is also a state that understands that progress is not inevitable, but progress is possible, and when i think about what happened last tuesday, i'm grateful, not only did we win, it is how we win. if you look at every single demographic, the fact that we won areas of maryland that were urban, rural, and suburban, i think it was because at this time and in this moment, this state was ready. judy: and in terms of the other candidates i mention who did not make it this year, does that say something about where we are as a country right now? >> we know that the history of this country, it has been a journey but an uneven journey. you don't have to look any further than the state of maryland to understand the complications of a racial history. what i do know, though, is as a state and what we saw here in the state of maryland was that we

cheri beasley was talking about abortion.ls can drive some democratic votes but you're not talking about the number one issue that voters are talking about today and america. judy: may i jump -- >> may i jump in? if you ignore what happened in kansas where voters rejected restrictions on abortion and a turnout that was presidential level. 60% of the voters were republicans. in the poll we just did, overwhelmingly voters say protecting a woman's right to choose is a top priority. it is higher among democrats and independents at 82% among democrats and 40 6% among independents. but 43 percent among republicans. we ought to be drawing that contrast. that hits home where people's values are. judy: i hear you saying what democrats ought to be doing. what republicans are doing among other things is spending a lot of money on talking about crime. saying democrats are soft on crime. people will be safe if they -- will not be safe if they elect a democrat. is that an argument in proportion to reality? >> i am a little biased because i

cheri beasley in carolina running against congressman budd.as elected to the supreme court -- the north carolina supreme court justices are elected. she served as the chief justice. somebody i'm looking at, okay? there is potentially a bunch of opportunities for democratic's -- he's gonna be very close races. to assume that this pennsylvania, very hard to win -- i worked two presidential races in the last two cycles. i lost one. one another. pennsylvania is never cut and dry. it's always a difficult state. pennsylvania is the easiest path to a majority in the u.s. senate. i think, you know, it's not the words we can use to describe it. -- >> having been on the ground in wisconsin, and i know you think lieutenant governor barnes can flip the seat, is the enthusiasm there? it's one thing to say, oh i'm, talking to simone sanders and saying, yeah, i'm enthusiastic. do you see the susie as i'm enough that it's going to drive people to the polls on tuesday to push this over the line? >> i think people are paying attention. i think they are excited.

lisa: in the senate, losses for democrats val demings in florida and cheri beasley in north carolinaamber remains without a single black female senator. only two have ever served there. ms. abrams: i got into this race for one reason and one reason only -- to fight. and not just any fight, a fight to save georgia. lisa: and stacey abrams' defeat in georgia leaves one glass ceiling intact. there has never been a black woman governor in any state. ms. abrams: i know the results are not what we hoped for tonight. i understand that you are hurting and you are disappointed. i am too. we may not have made it to the finish line, but we ran that race. lisa: a disheartening outcome for a group that votes in high numbers, still waiting for equal representation in politics. joining us to discuss this is nadia brown, the director of the women's and gender studies program at georgetown university. a big year for black women, wins and losses, but why do you think this was a significant year? nadia: because black women continue to run for elected office but not win all the time. because black women

north carolina, cheri beasley, 3.6%.ace might have been a tougher climb but that was also a winnable race. what i heard back from folks on the ground in those states and from florida is yes, there was money on the ground, and i'm not saying the dnc was responsible for it, but there was not enough money invested in turning out black voters, especially in wisconsin, where there seemed to not be a lot of movement among african americans and in north carolina and in florida. and definitely in the ohio race. was this a miss, not getting enough money on the ground, as you said was important, and not just by your group but by the dscc and others to get black voters out specifically? >> i push back on that because also in wisconsin, we did pick up the govern -- we kept the governor's mansion in wisconsin, also with the attorney general's race in wisconsin as well. and we picked up some congressional races in places like north carolina. part of the problem that we had in this election was the amount of dark money that flowed into
