the brothers saird and cherif kouachi are still at large.nd personnel have been mobilized to assist in the search. that is a stunning number. nine people have been detained and 90 witnesses have been questioned. but are authorities any closer to actually finding the two who committed this horrific act of terror? jim sciutto is front. and jim, this is the crucial question that so many around the world want an answer to. how could these suspects managed to evade authorities for this long? >> it is a good question. and not just u.s. but french authorities, on terror lists in both countries for a number of years. that is a major question at this point. authorities are going back over leads, both here and in the u.s. to see if they missed any warning signals. this is as they have the massive manhunt under way with particular attention focused on a forest about 45 miles northeast of paris. but still tonight, no sign of the gunman. as the manhunt continues for the attackers in the countryside outside of paris, a clearer picture is emerging of the g

they killed cherif and said kouachi.were responsible for the attack at "charlie hebdo" that left 12 people dead. the authorities at the same time killed a third gunman. amedy coulibaly. he was responsible for killing a french police woman yesterday along with the accomplice. coulibaly was holding as many as 20 people hostage in a kosher market in paris. at least four of the hostages were killed. at least four others were seriously injured in that market. we are learning more about the link between the terrorists attacks in france. amedy coulibaly reportly claimed allegiance to isis. reports say that amedy coulibaly also claimed to have coordinated with cherif and said kouachi in today's attacks. fox news's catherine herridge just reporting that cherif kouachi says he was financed by al qaeda leader anwar al-awlaki. he made the claims on the phone while holding a hostage in a printing house in a small town near the charles de gaulle air report. the other brother, said, also claims to have met with awlaki in yemen in 2011.

that's the younger brother cherif kouachi. when you red his rap sheet it's fairly alarming. arrested and jailed in 2008 for attempting to recruit fighters to join the fight in iraq and in 2005 he was stopped at the border attempting to travel to syria to go on to iraq himself to join the fight there against the u.s. occupation. that is just one brother. his other brother less known to the police but he was also arrested in 2010 or investigated in 2010 for the possibility of being involved in a jail break and it is his identification card left behind in a car abandoned by the attackers carried out on the street behind me that helped lead investigators to the two brothers. the police did know about them and had one of them the younger brother, 32-year-old cherif kouachi, under surveillance in the past but that surveillance had stopped. >> we're going to be learning a lot more about these two suspects in the coming hours. i want you to stand by. the paris terror attack certainly has the united states reevaluating its own high priority targets. pamela brown has new information.

there are reports that police have made contact with the brothers cherif and said kouachi, who say they're prepared to martyr themselves. they were on an american no-fly list, and one of them traveled to yemen to train with islamist militants. in the last few minutes, president francois hollande has revealed that france has been the target of terrorist plots for several months. >> translator: anything can happen at any time. at the present time, we should do everything to guarantee protection of our citizens. >> reporter: very good morning, and welcome to paris. it has been a dramatic morning here in france. police searches were ongoing throughout the night about 40 or 50 miles north-northeast of paris, but this morning the two men they were searching, said and cherif kouachi broke cover, stealing a peugeot 206 car, a dramatic car chase in inclement weather. police vans racing down the motorway in pursuit of this car. there was an exchange of gunfire. they were desperately trying to stop them arriving here in paris, heading towards the northeast corner. they holed up in dammartin-en-goele.

as was cherif kouachi. that was reported earlier. we also know the french and yemeni officials had both known the kouachi brothers had been to yemen yemen. at one point one of the brothers reportedly shared a room with the failed underwear bomber. the fact is they were all well-known to counterterrorism officials and somehow slipped under the radar long enough to plot, plan and carry out these attacks. >> and the explanation so far from the french is there are just soo many of these possible terrorists, or potential terrorists to keep track of. and perhaps these guys kind of laid low for a while. so whatever tracking was being done, they thought, well, maybe these guys are no longer operational. are intelligence officials, are they buying that in terms of lack of manpower, in light of all this information, are french officials sticking to that explanation? >> reporter: you know, they say there are a lot of bad guys to follow. even france's prime minister is admitting, anderson, there were failings in the intelligence system. just this

police say two main suspects here are brothers said and cherif kouachi. these men are believed to be heavily armed and still on the run. for the latest let's get to the ground in paris. turning to "new day" anchor chris cuomo. good morning, chris. >> reporter: john and christine. we have developments for you to discuss. obviously the two main suspects still at large. a massive manhunt now. a lot of manpower brought in to france with intelligence resources. there was another shooting here in south france that has drawn a lot of interest. police officers were shot and that is adding to the mix here. that is unusual in france to have police officers as the targets of violence. there is no knowledge at this point that there is any connection with the shooting in south france and what happened here at the offices of "charlie hedbo." here are points of curiosity. it was a police checkpoint. two officers had been injured in what was an open gun assault by a man in his mid-50s. a point of curiosity, he was dressed in similar fashion to the two terrorists yesterda

the suspects now being identified as two brothers cherif and said kouachi.d armed and obviously dangerous. french media citing police reports saying they robbed a gas station outside the city about an hour northeast of paris, almost three dozen police officers are on the scene of that gas station, taking forensic evidence. they can be seen transferring a number of items from the station to the forensic vehicles also developing overnight, a policewoman shot and killed in the southern suburbs of paris. minutes ago we learned it is being treated as a terror attack. it is not known if there's any connection to yesterday's massacre but witnesses sayed to's killer was dressed the same all in black and wearing a bulletproof vest. that killer is still on the loose. hundreds of police being deployed in paris for the burst of violence unsettling as it is tragic. i'm joined in paris by our chief international correspondent christiane amanpour. the amount of resources poured into the manhunt are enormous for france. >> it is the biggest manhunt in living memory after th
