joining us michael chertoff, served as secretary of homeland security, he is chairman of the chertoffurity firm. and maryellen o'toole, a former fbi special agent and senior pro timer. cnn law enforcement analyst, tomful. -- tom fuentes. michael chertoff, coordinating the investigation. you've speak as former secretary of homeland security will not be given easy given all the various agencies involved though the fbi is the lead agency. take us a little bit behind the scenes, how this will unfold? >> you are right, wolf, it is challenging. the good news, the law enforcement agencies in the district of columbia and surrounding regions actually have a lot of experience working together on investigations. back -- in the day of the sniper, for example, which was in 2001, two snipers, we had very good coordination between the bureau which had the lead, and then, the county prosecutors and county detectives that were investigating the individual shootings. so there is a lot of experience here. what also helps a little bit. it took place on a federal premesis. the federal government has contr

chad sweet, former chief of staff at the department of homeland security and now the ceo of the chertoffks for joining us. let me get first your reaction to what we've heard from the police chief. there seems to be a person of interest. we are not saying that this is necessarily a definite second suspect. the police chief stopped short of saying that. but there is another person of interest. clint van zandt, when you listen to what you have heard, what's your reaction? >> well, it seems that this is an absolute possibility. i think we're dealing with the fog of war. i think we're dealing with 400 different witnesses trying to say what they saw, what they heard. i have yet to hear any witness put a gunfiring in the hand of anybody else other than the principal suspect other than we know is shot and dead. >> jeff lanza, does the profile of this individual who is deceased, aaron alexis, 34-year-old man from texas, does this tell you anything about a potential motive? >> it seems to me like it's a pure case of workplace violence on its face value. what we have to understand now is the motive

chertoff has expanded our programs and brought it wonderful new directions. today we have two luminaries of american law here. the fact that we have justice marshall here is an important reminder of something many of us forget, even those of us who are lawyers, and that is we have something unique in this country in our constitutional system. we have state constitutional courts, and the work the judges on the highest court that the states play in interpreting state constitutions, and in many cases the state constitutional justices have taken individual rights further than the federal supreme court has. it is a unique aspect. some people call it dual federalism. we will talk about the interplay of state and federal constitutions. i would like to mention one thing because justice marshall is here, and it is to point out that justice marshall really was part of a team of two in terms of protecting the individual rights in the united states. and when she retired from the supreme judicial court of massachusetts in 2010, she retired in part to be able to spend more
