i'm cheryl hurd, nbc bay area news. >> thank you, cheryl. killed behind bars. a bay area man serve a life sentence for killing a girl in a drunken driving accident in novato was stabbed to death. he was attacked yesterday morning. he died last night, just ten days into his prison term. a jury convicted him of second degree murder of killing the 9-year-old and hitting the father in a cross walk. he had 39 prior duis. the marin county district attorney's office is handling the case. >> there's new information on the vote for the oakland a's. chuck reid asked them to back off the idea for a new stadium. san jose has until august 6 to put new initiatives on the ballot but they haven't said if they could move. reid said he would consider that request. >>> bay area students are going to get first-hand lessons in politics when they reach the nation's capital. before they left san jose today a rally was held for the 11 young people. one student said it's important to get the message out. >> i have a lot of friends who have friends that they just got deported, and they

i'm cheryl jennings. every weekje we focus on a different topic affecting thefe people living and working in the bayn area. a today we're going to talk about our at risk young people and we're going to share with you some valuable resources and programs that offer a helpingfe hand to these young offenders. i'll show you an example. a recent and deadly case in which two young men are facing trial. we filed this report in april. >> reporter: prosecutors say thesete two 18-year-old men spet friday sitting on an oakland street drinking rum, feeling angry about how their lives weren't going so well. they decided they wanted to punch someone.. the first people, police say, the two men met, were a father and son. o the elder father died from the attack. the motive doesn't surprise some community activists in oakland. >> this isf symptomatic of what we'rean seeing in oakland in the laste few years where young people have nothing to do, thert aren't jobs available andbe they're becoming more hopeless and more angr

. >> deputy city attorney cheryl adams. the approvals are before the board largely in approval up or downloads. the board doesn't have the board to unilaterally line item out or make amendments to the documents. if changes are what the board wants to achieve, then the appropriate approach would be to say to the department or to make a motion that the board will not approve various aspects of the project until the board is assured that other changes are made. those changes may be simple enough that the department, the agency and the project sponsor may be able to have side-bar and simply a degree to those. they could come into the file and be in the file and ready for you by the time you vote on this at second read. the changes could be of the nature that there's so integral to the project that they simply couldn't be approved at the board today or the next few weeks that they would have to go through the departmental process, be reevaluated, perhaps go through planning so there's a spectrum of what can be done here today. w

nbc bay area cheryl hurd is live in concord. the boy's father says his father should not be in jail. >> reporter: he told me he knows his father loved his son. yesterday 2-year-old jacob bigsby woke up, went downstairs but altered his routine. we are told by the family he usually crawls in bed with his grandmother. he opened the garage door with three of the family pit bulls were being kept, according to police. the dogs who had had never been introduced to the boy according to the great grandfather attacked and killed him. the father's step grandfather was not at home at the time, but he is being held responsible. >> i hope we get him back. my family needs him to heal. it's not just the loss of my son. my family needs him to heal. we can't heal without my dad. he doesn't deserve to go to prison. >> reporter: he is in the contra costa county jail right now. he is facing charges including child endangerment. his bail is set for $120,000. he will be arraigned some time next week. the family had five pit bulls in all. two of them j

. >> well, what we do and actually m oh , magic cheryl davis is on the community building panel. we work with them alot. mo magic came out of bay view. what she does and what we all do is volunteer and go to the meetings, is they actually find all of the different support and community based organizations from youth on up, families. they connect it to the community. they have a special events the black and white ball was put on by the mo magic. we did a call out and said come and volunteer at the black and white ball. even though it's not no in your neighborhood -- as you know nobody can put up a wall around your neighborhood. a lot of the different services are on different panels. one of the reasons we couldn't load the panel up more was time. we decided to step up and talk about the services. our police officers have a resource guide that when they go they hand out resource guides to families and the hopeless and the drug addiction. but also one of the things we believe in and what we are talking about here is we want prevention. when they are there playing football with the k

cheryl, you talked to a business owner who said the cops didn't have their act together? >> reporter: that's right, lisa. law enforcement here at the oakland police department are saying they are not perfect. a lot's been said about how they react during the the mehserle verdict but they say the criticism they're getting is not warranted. >> they was doing a job but they were not doing it correctly. >> reporter: this man says he lost $50,000 worth of merchandise when his store was vandalized following the mehserle verdict. in his opinion that was something police could have prevented. >> it took them at least 45 minutes for them to arrive and when they got here they didn't like know what they were doing. there was a lot of confusion. >> reporter: the confusion may have come from the fact that 15 bay area agencies came down to oakland to help them keep the peace. he said, they didn't do enough. >> the whole lobby was crowded with people, you know? they was jam packed like a shopping spree up in there. >> when you have 800 plus officers in your city and trying to coordinate
