i'm cheryl heard, nbc bay area news. >> thank you, cheryl. >>> also in berkeley, police are searching for an armed man who robbed a mcdonald's restaurant early this morning. the masked man hit an employee over the head when the store was being opened. after demanding cash, he forced four employees back in the restaurant freezer. he ran off, leaving a trail of money behind. police do not think this incident is related to the recent pedestrians robberies. >>> a toddler fell into a fountain at the hyatt regency in san francisco. that boy is in the hospital tonight. the 18-month-old somehow got away from his mom. a security guard is the one who found him at the bottom of a reflecting pool. officers did manage to revive the boy through cpr. a hotel guest tells us what happened after. >> it was really kind of a graphic scene, because when we got here, we were checking in and we could tell it was a small child, and he was become wheeled away by paramedics, but we didn't really know what had happened. >> a statement released by the hyatt states that the safety and the security of their guests

cheryl hurd is at the pd. police still don't know who this woman is, right? >> that's right, police still don't know who she is, and that's frustrating for police. but the man who called 911 yesterday was a bird enthusiast, as you said. he was waiting for high tilow t go out and take pictures, but when he got there, he made the gruesome discovery. >> i thought, is this a homeless person who didn't make it through the night? >> the 64-year-old bird watcher and photographer who agreed to talk to us by phone said he drove to his usual spot along the shoreline in martin luther king regional park on tuesday. around 4:30 p.m. he made the gruesome discovery. >> i thought there was some possibility that she might be hypothermic and might still be alive. >> he looked closely and thought she was not breathing. >> her throat was slashed and there was no blood. >> he says he saw marks on her arms, which may mean she put up a fight. he ran to his cell phone and called police. >> the female's body did appear to have signs of foul play, so it is being treated as a homicide

nbc bay area's cheryl heard is at the san francisco jail. but cheryl, the girl rescued because of a tv show. >> reporter: this story is pretty amazing. the suspect is here at the san francisco county jail and virginia authorities are on their way to take him back to their home state. now, a national television show is what helped police bring them to the suspect and helped them find that 12-year-old girl. >> i'll emphasize the value of television, i suppose. these are some good things that come out of it. we can, you know, find criminals. >> reporter: that's what police say happened friday afternoon. a safeway shopper watching a national cable show featuring on finding jeffrey easley and his girlfriend's 12-year-old daughter, brittany. >> we received a 911 call from a citizen stating that she had observed a male and a juvenile female matching the description of a possible kidnapping murder suspect. >> reporter: there was an amber alert for the two reported missing last week. police believe they could have been camping out in a nearby park in

cheryl jennings has the remarkable story. >> these young afghan boys are at the opening ceremony of a brand-new high school for their sisters in a province in afghanistan. it's high in the mountains at an elevation of nearly 10,000 feet. these pictures are from roots of peace. this is the only high school for girls here. it was paid for with pennies raised by children from the san francisco bay area and around the world. they joined the roots of peace children's pennies campaign co-hosted by two people from san rafael. >> i was approached by the first and only woman governor of afghanistan. >> she promised to build a school here. heidi and their daughter risked their lives to attend the school's dedication this fall. >> they know we are there. >> they were joined at dedication by her husband. he was there inspecting agricultural programs led by roots of peace. the students received brand-new computers donated by a company in dubai. they also returned to the very first school buy by the roots of peace pennies campaign back in 2006. there, they delivered more brand-new computers. >> we

reporting live, i'm cheryl herd, nbc bay area news. >> thank you, cheryl. now our other top story is one you probably already noticed. rain has made a return to the bay area. there were plenty of umbrellas in san francisco. just how long will this latest round of rain stick around. jeff? >> a moderate rainfall like we're seeing right now with this latest system really feels like a heavy rain when you're going 60 to 65 miles an hour on highway 101. now, this is all pushing here off towards the south. the northbound has already seen some of the heaviest rainfall that's started early this morning. now areas in san francisco on interstate 280 and also highway 101 getting in on some heavieie rain ll. we're finding that moderate rainfall very consistent right now. travel on interstate 680 into danville and into walnut creek. these totals anywhere from a quarter to half an inch for most of the northbound and the pence lap at this point. we'll continue to track this system and we will have more coming up later on in the show. >> all right, thanks a lot. new tonight

cheryl conner with simple tips to do right now. >> reporter: that's right. the red cross says most fires can be avoided. you have probably heard this a bunch before. but it is worth repeating. it is a family is going through unspeakable pain after losing six loved ones. >>> it is tough to put the right words to this video. imagine learning six people you love are suddenly gone. fire swept through this east baltimore home just before 5:00 tuesday morning, killing everyone inside, three adults and three children. >> this is coming from my family. so i first say i went into my basement and we were in the smoke through my pipes. >> when crews were able to get inside they found all six members of the family dead on the first floor. investigators have not determined if the family woke up to the ear piercing sound of the smoke alarm. but the american red cross is using this tragedy as a reminder that smoke detectors increase your chance of escape. >> a lot of these fires happen when somebody is asleep. so you hear the smoke detector go off and if you have practice

cheryl hurd is live outside the hyatt with more on the boy's condition. >> reporter: well, police are telling me tonight that that boy is hanging on at a local hospital. it all began here at the hyatt regency hotel at about 1:22 this afternoon. that's when police tell me they got the call. a mom and her two children taking a look at the holiday display here at the hotel. she had two children with her, a boy and a girl. we are told that they are both 18 months old. now, the boy somehow got away from her. she started searching and immediately contacted authorities here at the hotel. police were called in as well. an alert security guard noticed the boy at the bottom of a reflecting pool. we are told that that pool is about two and a half feet deep. he pulled the boy out. that's when police stepped in and started cpr. they got the boy breathing again and returned him to the local hospital. the lobby was crowded with hotel visitors and guests at the time. we talked to one guest who said it was a chaotic scene. she was checking in at the time and saw the aftermath of this tragic story. >>

toting me today to talk about this amazing exhibition at presidio habitat is cheryl hanes.an you tell me a little bit about the idea of the presidio habitat? >> succinctly, i have been long involved in the presidio. i was here when it was still a military base in the 1980's. i remember driving down walmart to the golden gate bridge and seeing the military guard at the gate and being utterly fascinated. >> so presidio habitat is an exhibition where you have invited, how many artists to think about the habitat? >> we put together a list of possible participants, local, national, or international, of people who are concerned with environmental concerns, made some sort of contribution to the landscape and conversation we're having here. we said that broke -- proposal requests and we received 25 back. from that 25, we went through and chose tend to realize in the landscape. >> including this building, which is an amazing example of recycling. >> we are proud of this space. it was designed by a local architecture team. we said, we need something that is a temporary structure, som

. >> cheryl, we know that the police officer was not shot. and here is what police are telling us. the officer in question suffered only lacerations and they won't tell us wr. exactly. it happened when he confronted the suspect in the park. now both men started to fight. the police officer who was, by the way alone, then shot the suspect. he, meaning the suspect suffered non-life threatening injuries and was shot in the hip. both were taken to san francisco general hospital just blocks from here. here is a play by play of what happened when the officer first approached four men who were drinking in the park. >> at one point, one of the individuals became combattive with the officer and a fight ensued. this struggle between the officer and suspect he tried to detain the suspect. at one point the officer fired at least one round, striking the suspect. >> now, police are still onthe scene, conducting their investigation. and i want to say that this is a big hangout for a lot of people here in the mission and as you can see, behind me. a place also where kids doum play soccer. i'm live
