cheryl: okay.e of the names that are leading the chart, certainly, doreen, one of the big -- i was just mentioning oracle and the technology sector overall. it's a bit of a surprise to see tech dragging things, especially those earnings numbers coming out of oracle. what'd you make of it? >> we've been spoiled with earnings, they've been very good, and now we're starting to get some mixed reviews and a couple of misses on some very big stocks, so that's giving people a reason to maybe take a little money off the table. cheryl: okay. kind of a correction that makes sense finally. let's go to the cme and ira epstein. i was just looking, obviously, at the euro versus the dollar, what else are you watching? >> well, i'm watching the gold, and i'm watching the silver because they're both trying to, if anything, create a bigger trading range, in other words, break out to the upside of their trading ranges. silver yesterday tried the downside, failed miserably, reversed today almost a full dollar higher.

. ♪ ♪ cheryl: hello, everybody, i'm cheryl casone. liz claman is on assignment.e on that. >> just a hot minute. the streak might be over, disappointing consumer sentiment dragging the markets into the red today. the dow is on track to close lower which would end its 10-day winning streak, the longest stretch it has had since november 15th of 1996. well, there you go. down 48 points. now, the s&p down slightly but still it could happen in the last, that record close. we're seven points away right now as you can see on your screen. and samsung rereesing its -- releasing its galaxy s4 last night, but the release doesn't seem to be shaking apple, not at all. the stock is substantially higher, up more than 2% as you can see right now, and despite a price target down to $630 from $715, so 441.35 on apple, they're surviving today when really the markets are not. now, the hollywood hills are known for the famous movies made there, but there is a studio in the valley that is gig blockbuster -- giving blockbuster movie makers a run for their money. liz claman is at one of

[ laughter ] cheryl: a new policy by cvs caremark requires everyone to submit their weight, body fat, glucose levels and other bottles or pay more for health insurance. doctor manny alvarez. love it or hate it? >> hate it. i think this is an invasion of privacy. you have to report for a physical otherwise you will have a surcharge of $50 a month. it is voluntary. in other words, you do not have to do it, but we will charge you $50. this is happening all over the country. cheryl: why not. companies have to control healthcare costs. >> you do not do that by punishing people and taking money away from their tables. $600 a month is a lot of money. fifty dollars is a gas tank for some people. this is not the way to do it. cheryl: they are dealing with higher costs. the alternative is to not provide health insurance to employees at all. that is where all of this is going. >> i do not have problems with policies limiting the number of procedures that you get.

cheryl: eric, thank you very much. >> thanks, cheryl.ecent efforts to reach out to republicans, he's clearly in for a battle over their budget proposal. joining us now with more, rich? >> good afternoon, cheryl, it is budget week in congress. house budget committee chairman paul ryan releases the 10-year spending plan tomorrow and consider the opening offer for republicans in the budget fights with democrats. ryan repealed the law to be a premium support or voucher system. for those younger than 55, and age say the budget contains no increases and allows for tax reform claiming the plan ensures the federal government spends as much money as it takes in in the next temperature years. ryan says these cuts will lead to growth. >> we think we owe the american people a balanced budget. we want to respect hard working taxpayers, and we think there's a responsible plan to balance the budget. the reason we do is not to make the numbers add up. it leads to a healthy growing economy that creates jobs. >> democrats who called ryan's budget dangerou

back to cheryl. cheryl: thank you very much.take a look at the market, we have had a lot of interesting action over the last three trading sessions in particular as we sit here today and look at the dow and the nasdaq and s&p. first, yesterday the intraday high of 14586. we have had an incredible amount of jubilant in the market particularly for the new highs we have been setting day after day. intraday high yesterday not a new record close last night, but again the dow with towering higher. look at the s&p, what we have had in the final hour of trading yesterday was the s&p. here are the builders, look at the builders right now because the builders are a big piece of the puzzle. all the names are lower except kb home. this is despite the fact you have existing home sales, this could be a piece of the story for homebuilders, existing home sales touching a high. 15% are the homebuilders, so there is pressure coming in today. watching the numbers coming in on "markets now" going through the last four hours. well, it is an industry

cheryl: last word tt you.out those high-end temporary workers, contract workers the making high salaries. those jobs are coming back. >> those jobs are definitely coming back. i think there's opportunity for people that are looking to get back to work, even getting a temporary job could lead to a permanent job in the future. companies need to start hiring. they cannot sustain. they have cut back, cut costs, reduced salaries. now is the time when any to start hiring. cheryl: i know that you are an economist. i do want to give you. if you look at the overall economy, and i go back to that wage quality issue, what is being set here is that the high end contract worker, the temporary the cfo is not getting a full-time job which to me says we are not complete confidence. >> i think you're right. we are not completely confident. what is a good thing is that we continue to hire workers on a temporary basis. for many companies they are doing that really as a way of feeling out potential knew hires so when you see the

cheryl: certainly.re is interesting because like you said, is typically defensive but has been one of the best sectors. we have gone away from some of those defensive characteristics. >> the demographics of the country. >> the big positive place. the big piece has been apple. a group you're looking for a pullback would you avoid technology. >> i would avoid it right here. i think ultimately technology is going to work. if you look below the surface, some of the smaller and madcap areas of technology seem to be doing better. blackie said, get rid of the elephant and the room. the sector overall it's a little bit better. again, i would wait to see a change in trend. perhaps later this year degressive. cheryl: you been talking about the fed today. obviously the decision from the fed chairman. sitting in for years of the fed just pushing liquidity do you think that the markets would survive if and when we got a pullback from the fed on qe? >> i almost think that would be the best thing for the markets over

cheryl: you are optimistic about this coming year.mer from going into the resort and spending money. >> it is. i think people are very resilient and they are getting used to it. i think that people may not go on vacation outside the area. i think it will be good for the casinos. we have to be careful this year, for sure. cheryl: let's talk taxes. less people are expecting a tax refund this year. payroll checks shrunk this year. they are also facing less of a rebate from the government. >> they do have less money to spend. there is no dow about it. we believe that people will still come to casinos and patronize our casinos. we feel okay for this year. we hope that the market will stabilize. cheryl: describe your general demographic when you are talking about las vegas and atlantic city. what kind of customers are using >> we are not in las vegas and atlantic city. those are two markets that may be hurt. the customer base lives within 50 or 70 miles from our casinos. the number of trips that we have seen from the casino customers have i

cheryl herd is live in san jose with this story. cheryl? >> reporter: well, frank ryan has been a san jose firefighter for almost two decades. the majority of that time spent here at battalion station one in san jose. as a paramedic, he told me tonight that he never dreamed he'd be the recipient of care he often gives to others. >> how are you doing, buddy? >> some of his colleagues haven't seen him in seven months. that's when st. patrick's cathedral went up in smoke. and that's when his life changed forever. >> i remember a lot of smoke. a lot of heat. i went outside and felt more than just exhausted. i felt extreme nausea. >> reporter: he says he thought he could walk it off. >> i remember saying i was going to get up into the truck to lay down and i don't remember anything else after that. >> reporter: frank rooyan, a 17-year firefighter and 20 year paramedic had a heart attack. his colleagues quickly went from fighting a church fire save ryan's life. >> from what i understand, my heart stopped three or four times. >> some of the report

let's go live to cheryl hurd in san francisco for tonight's same-sex marriage rally. cheryl? >> reporter: steve, the fight for gay marriage is being heard all over the bay area. as you can see they are preparing for a marsh that starts in the castro and will make its way to san francisco city hall. chris worthington is holding one of the rainbow flags that will fly at city hall on tuesday and wednesday as the supreme court hears oral arguments on prop 8 and defense of marriage act. >> i don't think the purpose of flying the flag in oakland, berkeley or san leandro is to try to change the supreme court's mind. it's to give encouragement and support to people that believe in marriage equality. >> reporter: it makes sense for support to come from the city of berkeley. two of the plaintiffs in the case to overturn prop 8 are berkeley residents. >> i think the more people talk about it, and the more they know somebody who is openly gay or lesbian, the more that it sort of stops being an idea. >> reporter: across the bay, san francisco has long been considered the epicenter of gay

a lot of women can't do what cheryl's done. she says is that you have to marry the right guy. which is a fine thing to say except, you know, how do you know he's the right guy. >> the difference is i think when you talk about jack welsh, people aren't asking jack welsh for advice on how to be a man and be at the top. they're just asking for advice on success and how to operate within a company. and i think there is a distinction because they're asking cheryl how to be a woman and then also how to remain on top. there is a distinction there. >> i'm not sure there is a distinction. i think they're asking cheryl sandberg how do you get to the top. when you have the sort of challenges that she has or that maybe cheryl has less because she has so much child care and a lot of help, but that women have. the reason we don't ask jack welsh how do you get a man to be on top is because we expect men to not have to be at home with the kids or to organize the play dates, to make sure the home runs on time. and i think cheryl's viewpoint is
