cheryl gave us the estimates on wages, the dow is up 7, nasdaq down 36. expecting the headline jobs number to be 180,000 nonfarm payrolls adding to the economy with the unemployment rate holding steady at 3.8%. let's talk about it now with wih dennis lockhart. great to see you. thank you for being here. give us your expectations for the jobs number this morning and how important do you believe the growth in jobs will be for the federal reserve's decision on whether or not to raise rates down the road? >> well, i doubt we're going to see a blockbuster month the way we did last month, i think it was 366,000 was the jobs number so i agree with the earlier comment. it's likely to be lower than that. but i think the overall conclusion the fed is likely to draw is that they're seeing a rebalancing of the labor market and a slowing or soft penning of the labor market, only gradually, no deviation that's stark or dramatic and so i think this report is unlikely to change their wait and see posture. maria: so what happened in the last month or so to the macro story

i think you're right, cheryl. i want to say, i'm reading tom lee's note this morning, cheryl.er thanksgiving as you know is a great indicator for market sendment. he writes this, it seems like retail sales black friday have come up 2 to 5% above last year's levels. in real terms, that's flat, he says. i would not look at strong black friday numbers as something the fed has to worry about. he says we see a zigzag but he ultimately sees the year end rally in place. the bottom line is, i don't know that anybody's writing home about the black friday numbers, cheryl. >> the numbers are coming in. you're right on a monetary basis, you're seeing the records but you have to account too, the issues of inflation. we get this with retail sales. maria: that's right. >> people are spending more because things are costing more. maria: good point. >> that's why you're getting record numbers. if you dig underneath it, it's a different story for the consumer that we know we're living a lot of times paycheck to paycheck, they're draining their savings and spending more on cr credit cards which
