reporting live in oakland, i'm cheryl hurd, nbc bay area news. >> cheryl, thank you.heroic for a 19-year-old kaur at highland hospital walking away just a short time ago. our investigative unit has uncovered critical information about the suspected gunman. tony joins us. what do we know at this point about this man? >> reporter: raj, oakland's police chief confirmed the shooter's identity. we first reported to you at 5:00 tonight. at this hour the oakland police department remaining without a whole lot of details about the shooter but here is what we know. the suspecteded shooter is 43-year-old one l.goh, a former nursing student. police investigators are working leads that the suspect may have purchased a .45 caliber gun last week at a gun shop. now we've learned more about the suspect in just the past half hour. public records show he has lived in the virginia area off and on for the past decade. public records also show a 2009 tax lien by the irs totaling $9,139. now in virginia he has two minor traffic offenses and received hunting and fishing licenses in 2006, 20

we'll stay with our helicopter shot while we try to get cheryl hurd back on the line. ing earlier today, a couple of hours ago, we believe police received a tip from that .45 caliber semiautomatic gun was inside of that garbage can about half a mile away from oikos university. just within the last few minutes, police and fire crews are starting now, cheryl said, to sift through this garbage can looking for that possible murder weapon in that mass shooting that killed seven people. >> that tip came from a recycler who spotted what may have appeared to be a weapon. again, this is very close to oikos university. it's at haggenberger and edgewater. police initially were on the scene but then waiting for firefighters to come because apparently the trash can is in a lockdown mode and they needed firefighters to bring the jaws of life and cut the bolt off so they can take it off and examine it piece by piece. you can see officers are sifting through the garbage can. >> for the last couple of days investigators and officers have been looking at the oakland estuary for this gun.

cheryl hurd shows us how changing individual lives is changing the fabric of an entire neighborhood. >> when you think of east palo alto, you often think of crime and violence. but when miguel thinks of the city he lives in, he says he dreams of opportunity. >> my dream is to study medicine. >> reporter: that might sound like a fairy tale ending to a feel-good story. but this young man's life is full of major obstacles. his family immigrated here from mexico. at age 12, he had to make an adult decision to come back to the states without his mother or father. >> and although i didn't want to leave and i wanted to stay there for him, we knew that an education was going to get me out of it, basically. >> reporter: he had to grow up fast. living with relatives that really didn't need another mouth to feed, was hard. >> i honestly thought about selling drugs, to be honest, because well it seemed like the easiest way to get money at the time. >> a year and a half ago, he heard about a job at one east palo alto, an outreach center for youth. the program started back in 2005. the whole idea

cheryl hurd joins us from at&t park. this is a very public figure going through a very personal issue. >> reporter: it's difficult when you're a private person. but when you're a public figure, it gets almost everyone's attention. giants officials are saying aubrey huff is suffering from anxiety. that's something, doctors say, is hard to diagnosis. >> anyone who suffers from worrying or nervousness, the lack of concentration, poor concentration. weak disturbance. >> reporter: dr. sonia kim is a certified e.r. physician, who has never treated the first baseman. but she's seen the impact of anxiety on her patients. manager bruce bochy says huff is on the disabled list so he can seek condition. it became clear that huff was going through some kind of emotional turmoil, when he left the team monday morning, prior to a doubleheader in new york. >> the family's here. >> reporter: the emotional highs of winning the world series in 2010, in the locker room, huff was open about his personal lows. >> my mom kept him on the stage.

cheryl hurd has reaction from one mom who has her doubts about the study. cheryl?> reporter: raj, no one really has the answers to the cause of autism or prevention. but this latest study is getting a lot of attention. >> he was born with a smile on his face and his arms outstretched. and he loves the world. >> reporter: she knows a lot about autism because of her 17-year-old son, ian. >> he didn't really speak until he was 4 or 5. he didn't say mommy until he was four. >> reporter: they have opened a center and counsel autistic children in san rafael. lawsen says the new study linking to beesty and autism is a stretch. >> we're being called fat moms. that doesn't help us. >> reporter: a ten-year study by the u.c. davis mind institute says, that women who are obese during pregnancy, are 60% more likely to deliver a child with autism, compared to women of normal weight. >> our intention is not to make women feel like they did something wrong. >> reporter: but paula, a co-author of the study says, that her research did find that a mother's obesity did affect a child'

cheryl hurd joins us now from concord with the latest in that tragic story. >> reporter: that memorial continues to grow here on creek boulevard for that father and daughter. and that 17-year-old we talked about is home tonight. an entire community here in concord continues to mourn. >> we're focused on burying our loved ones. that's first and foremost priorities. >> reporter: according to family member emil karzai, it comes at a time when the family is in so much pain. >> we know the justice system. >> reporter: late tuesday, the concord teenager left martinez juvenile hall. he is accused of losing control and plowing into the father and daughter. the parents refused to answer questions, driving away in this minivan with their son crouching inside to hide from cameras. the district attorney's office is holding off on filing charges until concord police department has compiled all of the evidence. >> based on the information at the time, they would rather have seen the case in its completed state. >> reporter: police say that could take at least two more weeks. two families and an enti

first, we begin with cheryl hurd from highland hospital, with the story of one survivor, a nursing student and soldier who was shot while helping her fellow classmates. >> reporter: as far as we know, two people are still recovering at the hospital tonight. one shooting victim left here late this evening. she's a straight-a student on the governor's honor role list. she is a quiet soldier who cares about her family. but she cared about her friend even more as she put her life on the line. a witness cell phone captured the sound of horror, gunfire coming from the inside of oikos college. you see there kawinder kaur, on the cell phone saying, she was shot. >> my sister was running saying, i was shot. i live in santa clara. i rushed to help her. they rushed her to oakland hospital where she was treated for a shot in the arm. her brother told us that his sister described the chaotic scene. >> he had been dropped out for three months. he walked into the class and brought a lady who brought it in. nobody did, he started shooting everybody. >> reporter: kaur was in back of the classroom, when bul
