we had cheryl hurd in the north bay tracking our fires.e are learning from cal fire that silverado fire is 100% contained. here is the best news for firefighters for the fire off to the north and east. we are going to see the winds calm as we head throughout tomorrow. the caveat here is humidities will stay low. 5 to 15% and we will have a very hot day with upper 80s and low 90s. the other fire is the yellow fire. this is 50% contained. it is just here off to the east of windsor and we will see the same scenario, low humidities and a hot day but winds generally relaxing through thursday. that is going to start to get us out of this fire threat. the largest zone of concern continues to remain the north bay where winds will be gusting the most as we head through tomorrow anywhere from 10 to 25 miles per hour. let's get a look at our 12 hour forecast for tonight. temperatures mid to upper 60s by 11:00 p.m. at the bay. also inland. clear skies through tomorrow and note by 11:00 a.m. temperatures should be in the 80s by the bay and mid 80s inla

"today in the bay" cheryl hurd has the story. >> reporter: this is the plumes of thick, black smoke, julia saw after walking her dog on this saturday afternoon. >> i thought it looked like it was pretty close to our house, and so when i got down here to the corner my husband and all my neighbors were out there, and i rolled down my window, and i asked is it our house? and he said yes. i said are you okay? and he said yes. fire officials got the call around 4:30. >> when our crews arrived on scene we had two houses involved in fire. it appears it started around the carport area between the two houses. >> smoke filled the air quickly, making it tough for some people to breathe. >> i was in my -- i was in my living room watching tv, and the whole house shook, and so i ran into the backyard to look. it was with my dog and i ran outside to look and another huge explosion goes off. >> there were at least two explosions and that's when the neighbors started scrambling and taking cell phone video of the fire. >> i heard a lot of explosions, popping sounds and just a fireball. >> the fire wen

reporting live in oakland, i'm cheryl hurd, nbc bay area news. >> cheryl, thank you. we are also learning more about the investigation and the victims of this tragedy. our coverage continues with nbc bay area's kimberly tere. she joins us live from the san mateo bridge. >> reporter: terry, that limo was heading westbound on the san mateo bridge last night at about 10:10 when smoke started pouring into the passenger cabin. the driver managed to stop the limo as the women scrambled to get out. the san mateo county coroner says it was a party of nine women inside the limb hoe who noticed the smoke and got the driver's attention last night. the white lincoln town car was pulled over. but by then the back end was engulfed in flames. >> this has to be one of the worst fatalities that i have witnessed in the years i've been with the office. and just the sheer realization that these people were trying to escape from inside the vehicle. >> reporter: it was a graphic scene. this is cell phone video taken of the limousine on fire. inside five women, all in their 30s and 40s, wer

nbc's bay area cheryl hurd has been talking to both sides.i remember when this rink opened it was a big selling point for the area. what's the plan now? >> reporter: well the developers say they have a deal. they will help build an alternative site for skaters, but the community, they say they're not happy with that. the san mateo city council meeting will take place at 7:00. it's expected to be packed here tonight with members of a gross roots organization to keep the skating rink open. bridge point ice rink is slated to close on june 1st. the skating community has been fight for about a year to keep it open. the current property owner out of san francisco is not renewing the lease for the ice skating rink that has been a part of the community for over 20 years. developers have other plans for the space that has rattled this tight knit community. >> we'd like to rink to stay there. if that's not possible, we'd like an ex tension for the current operator so that the community can work with inves r investors and with operators and with the cit

here's nbc bay area's cheryl hurd. >> reporter: there is a cloud of uncertainty other the america's cup campaign here in san francisco. the owner of the luna rosa is quoted in an italian magazine saying he will let his crew decide whether or not to continue with the upcoming race. san francisco mayor ed lee is aware of the speculation and anxiously awaiting to hear from america's cup officials. >> i'm keeping very close tabs with all of the teams. i want them to feel as safe as everybody. this is an incredible race but also one that should not compromise safety in any way. >> awe san francisco lead erss worry about safety the investigation continues as to why the artemis capsized killing one of the sailors on board. the traffic division which oversees both accidents in the bay is one of the many agencies looking into the cause of the crash. >> we tried to look at the video if it's available, the gpa, the speed, everything that these high-tech vessels have, we try to look to see if it will help us determine exactly what happened. >> reporter: the artemis flipped over own thursday during

cheryl hurd joins us at sfo. the limo drivers didn't know this was coming. what were the officials looking for? >> reporter: some of the limo drives may have known this was coming but the majority of them had no idea. this lot was filled with limo drivers and vans and law enforcement agencies say they just want to make sure that passengers are safe. shuttle buses were escorted to this parking lot at around 8:00 this morning. law enforcement and and state agencies say the idea behind the surprise inspections is to make sure that people who rely on these services are safe. >> we're looking for cars that don't follow the rules of the road, cars that don't follow permits, cars that aren't registered. secondly we're looking at the drivers to make sure they're qualified to drive the car. >> this inspection come just a few weeks after this limousine caught fire on the san mateo bridge. five women attending a bridle shower were killed. the cause is still under investigation. even though this inspection was not planned because of that deadly fire, it was on the minds

cheryl hurd spoke with the limo driver. we begin with kris sanchez who joins us with the emotional reaction from one of the women who survived. >> reporter: only four women were able to survive that fiery limousine ride here on saturday night. and she tells me that she was released from the hospital today as the limousine driver did not do enough fast enough to save her friends. less than two days ago they were in this town car headed to a bridal shower when says she saw fire. she said she tried to get the driver, orville brown to stop.
