but we begin with cheryl hurd from the bay bridge toll plaza. the bridge is closed. now what happens? >> now what happens as you can see, raj, the work is beginning. the bridge officially closed just after 8:00 tonight. and the crews didn't waste any time. they started grinding up asphalt to start the project right away. the crews are working around the clock, working hard for the people who use this bridge every day. drivers got plenty of warning that a bridge closure was coming. >> going to take the kids across it. we'll walk the bridge with everybody else and hope to be one of the first million people to cross it. >> there were a lot of folks who wanted to be the last person to cross the bay bridge before it closed. some people were driving in slow motion and got the attention of the chp. >> the chp was on hand to clear the people out. they were in fact some of the last vehicles over. whether they got the last vehicle title doesn't matter as long as they got to have that last moment. >> reporter: the bridge closed at 8:05 and soon after that, the work began. >> st

cheryl hurd is live in oakland where the negotiations are taking place. >> reporter: i have been texting the union repwho is a part of the negotiation team here in oakland and she is telling me nothing yet. i also talked to a bart spokesperson and he is saying there is nothing new to report. but a possible bart strike is very significant. the 400,000 bart riders will be left stranded once again. this time the grid lock on bay area freeways will be off the chart according to the metropolitan transportation commission during the last strike bart riders got lucky. the strike happened during the 4th of july week and a lot of folks were on vacation. if there is a strike on monday not only will it affect north and east bay riders it will affect almost everyone here in the bay area. >> people will be affected a great deal because there is going to be a shift in drivers. th will shift to the san mateo bridge. all of that traffic will be on interstate 880 to get there. >> it affects everyone every day. >> reporter: bart union workers are reaching out to the public with this billboard which says w

nbc bay area cheryl hurd is live on treasure island with the on again, off again saga. this would be a huge change all of a sudden. >> reporter: yes, it would indeed. there has been a lot of talk about this bridge. as you can see, it's well on its way to completion. but late today, there was a timeline for decision on the opening of the new bay bridge span. the oversight committee will decide on thursday when the bridge will open. now, it all started with this letter from the federal highway administration that was sent to the committee last friday. it says in part "we see no reason to delay opening the bridge to traffic prior to the sheer key retrofit between completed." the federal agency gave a thumbs up to the retrofit strategy. this is an about-face move from what was decided in july. the oversight committee canceled the long-awaited labor day weekend opening when it discovered that the retrofit project for about 100 defective bolts was going to take more time. in the meantime, cal tran and others came up with a plan, and the feds liked it. >> the toll bridge progr

that's where we find cheryl hurd. >> reporter: police agencies are looking for sandra coke. they will not tell us what led them there but they are pulling out all the stops to find her. members of the major crimes unit homicide left oakland police headquarters tonight, heading for the fairgrounds in vallejo, to search for a missing oakland woman, sandra coke. >> there's a person of interest. and that person has been arrested on a separate offense. we have not arrested this person in this case. but we are looking at this person as a person of interest. and that person is randy alana. >> reporter: nbc bay area has learned that alana is a sex offender, with a violent past. he's being held on a parole violation and is being questioned in the case. alana and coke know one another. in fact, police say they dated more than 20 years ago. and they have information that puts the two of them together on the day coke was reported missing. >> randy alana and sandra coke were seen later that evening, sunday, august 4th. we're asking from the media and the public, if anyone saw the two of
