our cheryl hurd is live in american canyon. you felt it as well. >> reporter: i did feel the earthquake. it was a violent earthquake, as jodi just said. we are live at third and brown and this is where all of the damage is taking place in downtown napa. you can see the car that is crushed and the facade on the side of this building coming down on this car. the roof is caving in to a wine bar on the corner down there at fourth and brown and there's a lot of devastation out there. with me live right now, as we continue to look at the pictures, is tony who has lived in this area for a long time. you felt the quake, didn't you? >> oh, yeah. it was strong. never felt anything like this, even with loma prieta. when loma prieta came in, it was a roll. this was pretty bad. >> reporter: what's your reaction to all of this devastation? >> well, you know, all of the power went out, it was dark, you know, and it was scary, you know. >> what's the first thing you did? did you check your water heater or the gas? >> yeah, we did. i had to fin

nbc bay area's cheryl hurd is at this location. the fear is that parts of this church could collapse on to some cars and even worse, people. >> reporter: that's true. but there is some good news to report. highway 29 closed down for about seven hours because engineers determined this church was unsafe because of the earthquake. a demolition crew started ripping down the top of the old bell tower at first baptist church of vallejo this evening because of this. bricks separating from the main structure. engineers determined the crack is the result of yesterday's violent quake. >> about 10:30, 11:00 this morning, we called the fire department and said this could be dangerous. >> reporter: the fire department determined it was dangerous enough to shut down highway 29. the damage to this 100-year-old church is just one of many buildings red tagged throughout the city. >> we have a lot of damage in our historic district with older residential structures with the old brick chimneys. >> reporter: so far ten buildings have been red tagged.

what you're looking at now is downtown napa where we heard from cheryl hurd. we have seen water main breaks in that area, fires at mobile home parks and we're told that there has been some damage to residences. there's a little bit of everything to date. no con firm of serious injuries. >> well, actually, just right now, sam, i just got information, the napa fire division in that area have reports of two major injuries. we don't know the extent of those injuries, actually where they have occurred. but as sam was showing you in the previous pictures of downtown napa, the old buildings there, the structure with all of the bricks, all those bricks fell. look at that. we're actually lucky that the earthquake happened during the night around 3:30 in the morning because that area is frequented by so many residents in that area and visitors. so far two, major injuries reported. as we take a look at some of the damage that we're seeing here, we're going to find out so much more as the sun is up and they are able to assess the area as well. they are looking at surround
