i'm cheryl jennings. joining us right now is somebody who has dyslexia, the lieutenant governor of california, gavin newsom. >> thanks for having me. it's fun. >> thank you for being so open about this. >> yeah, no, it's interesting. the response has been interesting. i've always been pretty honest about the fact i have dyslexia, but no one really paid much attention to it until i became mayor. and actually, one of the first things i did as mayor, the first public events, was visiting kids with dyslexia in the school, and everyone was shocked to know that i had this learning disability, which if i look back, was probably the best thing that's ever happened to me. >> except a lot of kids would hear that and go, "for me, it's the worst thing. >> it was, and it was terrible growing up. >> well, take me back. >> i think, for me, i think it was two things. one, it was very difficult for me, in terms of my own academic experience. school was a terrible and terrorizing experience. i'll just be candid with you. s

i'm cheryl jennings. every week we like to focus on a different subject affecting people who live and work in the bay area, and today we're looking at the role of women in the workplace. according to the united states department of labor, on the average, women make 78 cents for every $1 that a man earns. there are more than 31 million working mothers with children under the age of 18 in the united states, and these mothers are the sole or primary breadwinner for 40% of american households today. the wage gap remains a critical factor to the inequality women face in the workplace. our first guest today is a familiar face to the bay area, congresswoman jackie speier. she is also the founder of the professional businesswomen of california, or pbwc for short, founded 27 years ago. that's just so amazing. >> it's grown up. it's actually grown up. >> that's a generation. >> it is. and we have built this with volunteers, women in the workforce that want to help other women. and i love every year when we have the
