i'm jessica castro, guest-hosting for cheryl jennings. we've been talking with local leaders in our hispanic community about education, technology, innovation. silicon valley may be home to many high-tech companies, but often, students in east san jose are left behind. a program paid for by one district is giving the kids new tools to break through barriers, and abc7 news reporter matt keller filed this story from meadows elementary school. >> does it seem like everyone you know has an ipad? it may seem true, but in east san jose, accessibility to technology -- heck, even getting on the internet -- is a luxury many kids don't have. but that changed today for hundreds of elementary-school students in east san jose's franklin-mckinley school district. a big announcement at meadows elementary this morning, letting third through sixth graders know they now have 180 ipads available in their classrooms. the technology will help give personalized learning to students in a school that has 40% english learners. >> take a sixth-grade class, for exa

. >>> i'm cheryl jennings in for ama daetz. police have a suspect in custody.d near 8th avenue. >>> abc 7 news eric thomas joins us with police and eyewitnesses. >> reporter: that's where we are. this is east 15th street. oakland police have it blocked off while they investigate what happened. let's show you the scene from sky 7. a little bit after it happened. the scene, a young girl, police won't say how old. was apparently hit by a car moving at a high rate of speed near the scene. police won't know if it involved drugs or alcohol. they know the driver was going too fast. the driver apparently continued on to the 400 block of foothill where she slammed into another vehicle and went out on foot. now, we're going to give you a chance to hear from two about what happened. first, the oakland police department about the victim and her condition right now and second from a witness who saw the subject on foot before she was arrested by oakland police. >> emergency medical response arrived on scene to provide medical attention and the victim was transported to a hos

. >> i'm cheryl jennings in for kristen sze. the child was hit near 8th avenue not far from lake merit. the driver taken into custody nearby. >> let's go to eric thomas live in oakland with the latest on the story. eric? >> reporter: dan, we're told the young victim is in critical condition at the hospital right now. the story begins here at the intersection of 8th avenue and east 15th street where you see a couple of police motorcycles are here and officers are conducting their investigation. they say this is where a maroon toyota traveling at a pretty good clip hit and critically injured the young victim. the scene, this all happened at 1:30 in the afternoon. this is where the hit and run occurred. the toyota then continued on to the 400 block of foothill where the car slammed into the back of another vehicle. no one was injured. the owner of the other car was not injured there. the suspect then walked away from the scene. she was taken into custody outside a strip mall on 9th avenue a short distance a wachlt we talked to a wi
