nbc's morgan chesky reports. >> reporter: tonight shipping giants nationwide ready to rollout pfizer's covid-19 vaccine. the next 24 hours crucial. the first doses moving from a pfizer plane in michigan to fedex and ups hubs like fem fs, tennessee, and louisville, kentucky, before going out to 636 locations nationwide. ups mostly covering the east coast while fedex primarily covers the west. >> it's historic, a monumental event. i believe as a company it may be our finest hour. >> reporter: he says the company is using realtime tracking to follow every vaccine shipment from start to finish. >> there is a distribution that's essentially broken down into different states, different metropolitan areas will go to fedex versus ups. but we're prepared to deliver from anywhere to anywhere on a time definite basis overnight just as we do every day out there. >> ups using a similar strategy. >> we can be very agile in how we handle any kind of shipments coming into louisville. >> ups health care president wes wheeler says each box like these that went to canada not only pack would dry ice but a

let's go straight out to nbc's morgan chesky live on the ground. so, morgan, not only are we getting this new -- that new video we just showed, that new vantage point of the explosion, we're learning more about that recording. it was also playing music? >> reporter: yeah, lindsey, kendis, good morning. was playing music over the course of several minutes. we know that amidst that music, there was also that eerie warning that was telling people to clear the area, there was an explosion coming from that rv. this all took place about five blocks from where we're standing, right in the heart of downtown nashville. and it all began right there on christmas morning, about 5:30 in the morning. that's when police were dispatched to that area after hearing reports of gunshots. upon arriving, that's when they encountered this rv that police said had been placed there at about 1:22 in the morning, according to surveillance video. that's when they saw that kind of bizarre situation play out, playing music, playing a warning. police did their best to clear that

meantime, morgan chesky, thank you so much. it is a very exciting time. we'll go there now to that pfizer facility in portage, michigan. talk about new information that i understand you have today. >> reporter: it was about 8:30 when we saw the trucks leave this plant. we had cameras inside that were able to show us kind of the process of workers going from taking trays of this vaccine, vials of the vaccine, out of freezers and very carefully every step packaging them to then put them on the trucks that were here waiting in the loading docks just over my shoulder. about 189 boxes, each of those with a little under 1,000 vials of the vaccine, each were loaded on to trucks that then left this facility to start making their way to the airports that would then take them to the distribution centers in louisville. and another one in memphis, tennessee. today pfizer says about half a million doses of the vaccine have gone out, there are five doses. in every one of the tiny little vials, so even thoef the boxes don't look huge, there is a lot in there. as we watc
