let's bring in airbnb ceo brian chesky. welcome back, thanks for coming on the show. >> thank you for having me today, liz. liz: this is your first quarter ly report since taking the company public two months ago. translate for investors airbnb's near $4 billion loss and why it isn't as bad as it may look on the surface. >> well, yeah, the gap ebitda loss was involved, involving a couple one-time charges. one of those one-time charges was for stock based compensation which is typical when you go public and those charges were a bit higher than we expected because the stock price actually was much higher than obviously when we went out at $68 and so now it's over $200. additionally, we had more than $300 million in charges based on a warrant that we took out as part of a debt financing last april, so these are one-time charges but i think the really important thing to look at is adjusted ebitda. if you look at the progress quarter-to-quarter. last year, our adjusted ebitda was minus about a quarter billion dollars and this pa

morgan chesky is in houston for us.ring and the ongoing investigation. >> reporter: craig, goodgreg, g. those hearings are continuing in austin today. they went about 12 hours yesterday. this was the first time that ercot had faced state lawmakers to try to explain just what exactly happened during that weather crisis that nearly caused a statewide blackout. at one point, they said the grid was 4:37 away from being totally shut down to the point where it wouldn't have taken days to bring it back but potentially weeks or longer. and we had energy providers sitting inside the texas capitol offering what sounded like heartfelt apologies because they're very aware of the millions of texans that have suffered and are continuing to suffer from this. we also had a chance to hear from the one man everybody has been talking about, ceo bill magnus, who runs the ercot board. most notably he said if given a chance to do it all over again, he wouldn't have changed anything. take a listen. >> i feel a great deal of responsibility and

morgan chesky is in dallas for us this morning.: yeah, peter, kristen, good morning to you. right now we are finally going to see above freezing temperatures that should hold for the next few days, but after that outage crisis played out we are seeing a new one come in the form of water issues all across the state. i want to show you the latest numbers just in from state officials. they say that statewide there are currently 1,300 water systems that are now compromised as a result of this brutal cold snap, and that impacts 14.9 million texans. that's about half the population of the entire who lost power, who lost access to water, it was a shelter for them that went up in flames. when firefighters showed up to try to put it out, these sprinkler systems inside that building was frozen solid. we have heard similar stories playing out for fire crews across the state. in turn, we know that these water distribution centers are popping up in major cities everywhere. people are waiting for hours in lines to try to get a little food, try t

that was nbc's morgan chesky reporting. so, how did texas get here? well, it might help to understand how our power grids work. across north america, there are three major power grids. the western interconnect, the eastern interconnect and the texas interconnect. in texas, power is managed by the electric reliability council of texas, or ercot. ercot dictates how power in the state is distributed based on availability and demand. experts compare them to air traffic controllers but for an electric grid. ercot was formed in 1970, build on texas' long history of energy independence. back in 1935, the federal power act gave the federal government authority to regulate power companies that engaged in interstate commerce. texas didn't want the federal oversight, so it agreed not to sell power beyond state lines. now, texas is not the first state to suffer from a weather-relate powder outage, far from it, obviously, but its isolated grid may have made waters worse. when demand for power spikes in parts of the u.s., including probably where you live, states c

morgan chesky joins us from dallas. it's not getting much warmer down there and there's no clear answer whether the power will come back in houston. >> reporter: yeah, andrea, you're absolutely right. that's what's so frustrating for about 3 million households across the state. last check, that's how many people are still in the dark as a result of these frigid temperatures that have turned a cold snap into really an all-out crisis here in nearly every corner of the state. we're in our fourth day of subfreezing temperatures, and there's not just unprecedented, but it's really a temperature that people aren't used to. they can't handle. the buildings are not made to withstand these kinds of temperatures, and we're seeing that play out in the fact that people are trying to stay warm however they can. people have been sending in pictures of the thermostats inside their homes, and it's heartbreaking. one reads 45 degrees. i spoke to another gentleman who had to move his wife across the street in the snow after it dropped in

nbc's morgan chesky is in dallas where temperatures dipped below zero this morning.gan, more snow expected in texas today. what are you hearing from people who live there about when they can expect their power to come back? >> yeah, craig. what we're hearing it's an absolute guessing game. rising levels of frustration across the entire state of texas due to the fact that these rolling blackouts are in effect and important to note, i spoke with a utility worker earlier today who runs a company in dallas that treats some of the damaged lines to try to get power restored. he says one of the problems they're seeing is that whenever they see power outages occur they don't if they're associated with these planned rolling blackouts or if they're suffering from some weather-related problem. so essentially they have to wait until power is fully restored until they can key in on these areas that need to be repaired immediately. in the meantime you mentioned 4 million texan households without power. every household about two people, so looking at upwards of 2 million trying to

my colleague morgan chesky joins us from dallas and morgan about the only upside here is i assume thed weather motivates people to wear a mask, because it's one extra layer on your face. but how bad is it, morgan? >> reporter: it's bad, chuck. right now those numbers coming from the state aren't just 4 million people, that's 4 million households across the state of texas that are without power. and that's upwards of about 10 million people in this state that are now going on two plus days now in sub-freezing temperatures and that's simply a situation that not only the state is not prepared to deal with but a lot of these folks aren't prepared to deal with. we're in a neighborhood here in south dallas, i had a chance to speak with a gentleman here, steve rivera, he moved his wife from this house across the street to a neighbor's home, because they have a fireplace. steve doesn't. you can see that firewood piled up in the front yard there. the reason he had to do that is because his wife is in a wheelchair, and diabetic and she's unable to stay warm in their house. they have had three h
