he joins us live from chester county. danny, why don't you bring us up to speed on what you're learning. >> reporter: john, listen, yesterday i came on the air with you and said that we got the update that so many had been fearing, that danelo cavalcante got his hands on a rifle. well, today this is the update that so many had been hoping for for so many days. cavalcante now in custody. a source close to this investigation first let me know about a half hour ago, now we see these stunning images of him being taken into custody by several law enforcement agents dressed in full tactical gear, also pennsylvania state police who have been running this operation, you could tell they also were right there as cavalcante was being brought into custody. we are still of course waiting to learn a lot of information about the exact nature of how they were able to take him in, we are expecting to learn that at a press conference around 9:30. i want to tell you a little bit about what we do know at least about the area and the situatio

so what do you know about the chester county prison? >> well, the chester county prison is a place that suffers from a lot of the maladies that many prisons suffer from, which is staffing having to do excessive overtime, trying to hire additional correction officers. but that's not unusual. on the other hand, laura, you know, you look at prison escapes in the united states. in 2000, there were about 5,000 prison escapes across the united states. that means from state prisons and federal prisons. >> big number. >> in 2019, i think that number was down to just under 2,000. so we've seen prison escapes go way down. part of that is the reduction in the prison population. but most of them are from minimum security facilities, medium security facilities. this is a fairly secure facility, which means he had to put some planning into it, some creativity. it's unlikely that a door was left open. but one of the reasons we're not hearing about the details of how he got out is it's probably not a pretty story. >> that's an important point. just thi

first chester county alerted there was a shooting around 10:10 p.m.ast night in the area of coventriville road and ridge road. we are on ridge road right now. police confirmed to cnn around 10:24 last night that there was a confirmed sighting of cavalcante. then that reverse 911 call went out to the folks in the south coventry township community advising citizens to locks their doors and windows. at that time they said cavalcante may be in the area and he may be armed. overnight at 1:45 in the morning pennsylvania state police confirmed that cavalcante is armed and they're searching this area. so this perimeter is about four and a half miles north of the area where cavalcante is said to have ditched that van that i mentioned earlier. so police were right when they said yesterday that cavalcante was still in chester county, still in areas where they were searching but they were not able to get their hands on him at this time. sara, this really is the nightmare scenario that he finally has his hands on a weapon. we are hoping to learn more about what ex

i'm nate foy in chester county, pennsylvania as nate foyt tells us from chester county police are warning that he may now have a weapon. the hunt for escaped prisoner and convicted murderer danilo cavalcante is escalating after he armed himself overnight. we have considered him dangerous right from the very start. it changes nothing. we have always considered him to be a risk. we just now absolutely know that he has a weapon. cavalcante broke into a garage monday night and stole a 22 caliber rifle with a scope and flashlight. the homeowner shot at the escaped prisoner with a pistol, but authorities have no reason to believe that cavalcante is injured. i believe it was a crime of opportunity. i think he went in there probably trying to hide the garage door was open. he didn't, i believe, recognize that the owner was in there. state, local and federal authorities set up a new search perimeter using dogs, helicopters and drones to try to hunt down the convicted killer. police are urging everyone in the search area to lock all doors and windows, secure all vehicles and stay indoors. i can't b

'99. you guys got him after 18 days. are the circumstances in this case now harder? >> i would say the circumstances are harder for the fact of the recent developments as of last night to early this morning, is that he stole a gun. so 1999, so we're looking at two very similar individuals, right. both escaped convicts. they both were charged and convicted of murder. and so that is the worst of the worst. so they escaped. norman escaped and stole a car and made his way back to his home territory, which was chester county, and bouncing between three states, stealing

so, it got chester county detectives looking for them. we're just talking about, have become pretty experienced in tracking these guys down. and of course, the u.s. marshals, who are the most expert man hunters for fugitives and escapees, all working together. >> chief ramsey, where you start when it comes to searching for somebody like this? >> you are going to start with an area somewhat near the prison. he had an hour head start, which is not good, and it's going to expand out from there, it probably already has. no doubt. you've got helicopters. you've got drones. you've got all these different law enforcement agencies. probably some door to door to make sure that people are aware that this individual is on the loose. he is extremely dangerous. he was convicted of one homicide, probably committed another homicide. so, he has absolutely nothing to lose. and so, he is a threat to the public, no question about that. but as john said, the u.s. marshal service is very skilled in this. this state police hours well. they -- eventually catch
