a 16-year-old college freshman, her name cheyenne fitzgerald.hot once in the back, and recovering from a bullet being removed as well as a kidney. fitzgerald is credited with saving the life of another teen survivor, anna boylan, by telling her friend to play dead. bonnie fitzgerald, cheyenne's mom, sat down with me tonight to talk about her youngest child and how she learned about the shooting. >> bonnie, tell me about your daughter. what is cheyenne like? >> very energetic. on the go. >> reporter: she wants to be a nurse? >> she wants to be a nurse. >> reporter: so she was at school, her fourth day, on campus. and this happens. how did you hear about it? >> i started texting my daughter. but she wasn't replying, or responding back, which that meant -- i was going to go to the school. instead i came here, to mercy medical center. because my inside feelings brought me here. >> reporter: what was the first thing you said to cheyenne? >> i touched her, and she was cold. and she -- she was in shock, but talking, and she said, "mom" -- she didn't wa

[ inaudible question ] >> why and how did it happen. why. well, probably since this was just her fourth day of college, she's probably just trying to figure it out, you know? >> she completed a d.d. program and she passed everything. she was accepted into ucc and the nursing program. >> did she tell you anything about the shooter -- [ inaudible ] >> an envelope and was told you're going to be the lucky one and to go to the corner. and he told everybody else to go to the middle of the room and lay down is what i heard from my daughter. chose somebody, that he was the lucky one to be picked, yes. >> cheyenne told you that he said that, he picked somebody? >> she, obviously -- she was right there, you know, so he called the one guy, gave him the envelope and told him to go to the corner of the classroom, because, obviously, he was going to be the one that was going to be telling the story. >> you'll get that in a minute, yeah. >> was cheyenne on the ground

but i know my daughter is very strong and she is going to get through this. >> thursday was cheyenne's fourth day of college. her mother says she is beginning to talk now but she is still jumpy when she hears a noise. one student who was in the classroom is being called a hero. he is 30-year-old chris mintz an army veteran. his family says he was shot seven times while trying to stop the gunman and survived. >> tried to block the door to keep the gunman from coming in, gets shot three times, hits the floor, looks up at the gunman and says, it's my son's birthday today, gets shot two more times. >> chris will be okay but he faces a long recovery, as well. a "go fund me" page has family started requesting $10,000 for medical expenses has already raised more than half a million. >>> overseas now at least 19 people are dead following air strikes that hit a hospital in afghanistan. u.s. forces were conducting an operation in the area at the time. many of those killed worked with the humanitarian group doctors without borders. kpix 5's anne makovec with the angry response to the bombings. >>
