nbc's kristen dahlgren is in cheyenne wyoming. kristen, good morning to you. what can we expect in terms of turnout there? >> reporter: hey, there, alex, it could be record turnout. they were kind enough to show us the space they needed. originally, they were going to be held in this small hotel downtown. they said we need a bigger space. this is where people will be coming in and registering. this is where the caucus will actually happen. you will get possibly as many as 2000 or 3,000 people in this gym. they have printed 3,000 ballots. so they are expecting they could go up that high. they are breaking up into groups. there are going to be four group that is they are splitting up into, the undecided, the hillary clinton, bernie sanders camp and then there is rocky delafuente. not expected to have an impact but he is on the ballot. they have to get to 15% and it will go on. state-wide results. we should know. really, it is the least populated state in the nation. a lot of people wouldn't normally be paying attention to wyoming. this year, all about momentum a

nbc's kristen dahlgren joins me from cheyenne, wyoming. what kind of turnout are we expecting today and what would it mean for senator sanders at this point? >> reporter: they're expecting a big turnout. you can see here the volunteers have started showing up. they are getting ready for what could be big crowds. in this county, 680 surrogate ballots in. so it doesn't sound like a huge number, you know, compared to maybe a state like new york. this is the least populus state. but when you're looking at the population of potential democratic voters here in this state, they are expecting really about 20%, maybe. there's only about 19% of this state that are registered to vote democrat. and it's a very red state. and so for the democrats, there's a lot of excitement. a lot of people talking about it. because of what it could potentially mean to bernie sanders. and if he were to win, this would be his seventh straight state win. so it's really momentum that would put him going into new york with that momentum that he's been talking so much abou

she's been there since yesterday covering the developments in cheyenne. good to have you with us. this is the part of the show where a lot of folks are waking up scratching their heads a little bit, because as we were saying sanders got the most votes last night but clinton came out with more delegates. think you're going to have to explain that to some of our viewers. >> right. and there really is a difference, ayman, between the popular vote and the delegate map. so let's start with the popular vote. when you look at it, senator sanders came away with 56% of the popular vote to secretary clinton's 44%. so a difference of 12% there. but then when those numbers are crunched down into delegates, there wasn't enough of a popular vote lead to give senator sanders that one extra delegate, say, so they came away both with seven of those delegates that were up for grabs. of course there are also then those superdelegates. there were four superdelegates here in wyoming. usually party leaders. those four have already pledged to secretary clinton. so she really comes away with 11 delegates
