cheyenne, thern comanche, the apache. there the southern plains of life. a stronghold of people trying to escape. was right inhis the center of comanche territory, it was really hard to get to. and of course, the native americans had knowledge of this area. they did not actually use this as a stronghold, and there was a series of battles in 1874. and the most decisive battle was the battle of palo duro. the comanches, kiowas, cheyenne, set up a campground and they were under the mistaken impression they would be left alone in the canyon that winter. so, that was late december. dismounted their horses. they led them down into the canyon. battle that had a high casualty count. it was more of a route. imagine, you go in there with your wife, your husband, your aunt, your grandmother, all of these people who are with you and you wake up to these soldiers attacking your town. what would you do? they did the only thing they could do, which was flee. most of the native americans successful. this gave the cavalry the opportunity to come back and destroy their supp

stuart was from that cheyenne valley settlement and he married the sister of a comrade eliza thornton who lived nearby and -- in sauk county. stewart's own sister martha married aaron roberts, another soldier veteran from the giant valley settlement. there was a lot of marrying among these families, they were very interrelated. another way in which they maintain contact was when they got around to applying for pensions, the pension folders have many letters from other soldiers fellow soldiers supporting pension applications for these men. so they they really did maintain maintain contact. i think of one pair of soldiers who who said they met it was the names william mckinney and isaac isaac smith they're both members of company f 29th u.s colored troops. but they met earlier in the war when they both worked for the 11th wisconsin infantry during the siege of vicksburg when the officers they worked for came back to wisconsin these two came , back with them and within weeks the wisconsin started recruiting for the u.s college -- colored troops and they both went right away and enlisted.

in 1866, when red cloud succeeds in aligning the cheyenne, arapaho and lakota people, he ends up asking them to gather and make a very strong showing against fort phil kearney. we think there was an attempt on december 19 -- there were probably 1500 very disciplined warriors. but on that day, for whatever reason, the leadership did not go over the ridge and carrington said he told everyone not to cross the ridge because he can't defend any battle that might happen over there. he can't see it happening, it's going to be difficult to get the howitzers out there. the wooden train goes out and is attacked as it usually was. carrington says it's the last day they are going to gather wood. in what we consider the decoy party, there were six warriors. two from each of the rep setting tribes for the coup that is about to occur on that day. one of those men is almost definitely crazy horse, a very young warrior. and a man with incredibly strong medicine as a warrior. they attacked the wood train. the infantry goes out -- that was one of the amazing things about fort phil kearney, one of the nail
