lucy williamson, bbc news, chiang rai.re the attention of thailand and the world. fergus walsh looks now at why the operation to bring the boys to safety is so complex and challenging. the operation to rescue the remaining boys and their coach from deep beneath this mountain has been risky, complex and daring. they have been stranded about two and a half miles from the entrance of the cave system. getting them out one by one involves the walking, wading, crawling and, for long periods, diving through murky, muddy water. there are narrow passages, sharp inclines and descents. two divers accompany each boy. the youngsters, aged 11 to 16, are given full face masks and air tanks so they can breathe normally. there's a guide rope to help them through tunnel and replacement air tanks at key points. now, where the tunnels are flooded, the escape method involves the boys being attached to a diver, hugged underneath their body. but there are pinch points. 0ne hole narrows to around 15 inches. so they have to squeeze through on thei

jonathan head, bbc news, chiang rai, northern thailand.vers from around the world came together in chiang rai to help the thai authorities rescue the boys and their coach. 0ur correspondent fergus walsh has been looking at how, against all the odds, they managed to mount such a daring rescue mission. heroes all, the 90 divers who took part in the search and rescue, included thai navy seals, british cave divers and other international experts. it has gripped the world's attention. the british cave rescue council said seven of its divers had been part of the cave rescue team helping to bring the boys out. they've done something that i think we all thought was barely possible, you know, and they have pulled it off. the challenge, getting the 12 boys and their coach to swim 2.5 miles through these narrow and flooded caves to safety. it began 17 days ago when the boys and their coach went missing. they'd gone to write their names on the walls of the cave. a huge international rescue operation began. they were alone for nine days until found by

jonathan head, bbc news, chiang rai.spondent dan johnson has been near the exit of the cave in tham luang, where the amount of rainfall is being closely monitored. yes, this is what the officials in charge of the rescue always feared. that it would start raining really heavily, and that that would increase the water level in the cave, possibly putting the boys at risk. because if the water level went up any further they would run out of space to stay clear of the water. now they said that they had a window of weather in the last couple of days, and that's why they chose today to start this rescue attempt. the man in charge of the operation says it's d—day. that underlines just how daring this rescue attempt is. but perhaps this shows you why they needed to at least get started. he has made clear that if the water levels in the cave do start rising who are still in there, they do have an emergency evacuation plan that they can bring forward to move people out even more quickly. but if the rain doesn't affect the water lev
