and i thought of course, because again in chicago, everybody has connections. so i just thought i would say a few things about writing this book, and then i'm going to interview a traitor because that seems much more fun than listening to me talk. first of all, why i wrote this book, i moved to chicago in 2004 for forbes, and it just seemed that i seem to need a lot of traders everywhere i went. we rented an apartment in lincoln park, and took up tennis which we played very badly, and ray, a big trader play tennis on the next court regularly. another time went to the lakefront, and i was reading a book about the dummies guide to futures and options because it just seemed that it was a big local business and i should learn more. some guy came up to me and tapped me on the shoulder, it's going to get easier. and i said that's good, because i was reading about some, i think was a butterfly trade and options and it just seems like craziness. meeting all these traders seemed interesting, and i just got carried. of course, the chicago trade building is gorgeous. i wa

it is chicago economic history. but futures have, you know, transformed the financial system in ways that i think that people don't fully maybe appreciate and don't realize. that goes for traders as well as for people now who are wrestling with these big concepts like derivatives and understanding where they came from and understanding what happened here is a story that hasn't been told very much. and i'm not so silly as to think that it's completely told in this book. i mean i'm hoping that this is a -- i've scratched the surface of what i think is interesting history. it deserves a lot more attention. and i know that i have more stories in my notes that didn't make it in. i hope that i can to add to this record after this and another time. because there just really is so much here. so i asked bill to talk because i was hoping that he might be able to explain to people who aren't in the industry who are here what i'm even talking about at all. because his family very much mirrors the story of the futures industry h

in 1909 daniel bourbon produced a plan of chicago. plan was produced, a few years later the chicago plan commission was organized and the first head of the chicago plan commission was a man named charles whacker. a were smart guy. he produced the whacker manual which was taken to every high school many the city of chicago and taught as part of the -- of a civic class in high school. and the whacker manual was describing what chicago could be if the city decided to take certain steps. and it was the whacker manual that caused all the money in bond issues to transform the chicago lake front from an industrial commercial railroad district to greater water front that it is today. we're going to borrow on that strategy. we now have the mayor's support to produce a master plan for thi city streets, these mean streets that allen talks about and we're all agreed it needs to be done. then when we finish that, we're going to have the mayor or keyboard members go out and sell this plan which is going to set standards for redoing the major street

in a lot of the migration to chicago. did you find anything on that? >> absolutely, the chicago defender was one of the first to document. the first reference to the migration actually is in the chicago defender from 1916 in which it is referring to a small party of african-americans who left selma saying it's not worth staying any more. it was just a paragraph. and so was the first documented indication that there was a migration of foot. they were instrumental in that they brought news from the north that gave hope to people who were here in and on that channel situation and was almost contraband because it wasn't illegal to even have the chicago defender. a very threatening of course to the caste system here in the south to have workers, the bedrock of the economic system for wheat to the north. you should know also that there were tremendous efforts to keep black people from leaving the south particularly their early years of the migration, the early decade of the migration. trains would be stopped. if there were blac

she is a washington bureau chief of the chicago "sun-times" and she knows chicago politics. so, lynn, what do we make of this? >> well, as rahm said today in chicago, his father said life is never easy. this is throwing the race up in the air, goes directly to the illinois supreme court. emanuel's campaign is going to push very hard to say we will prevail and they're going ask for states to let the ballots be printed with his name on it. but i think in the meantime this has thrown a monkey wrench for the people in chicago who have been watching this legal case, charlie, this is not a big surprise. there is always a legal problem where you can argue it both ways and two earlier decisions were for rahm and now one is against him. >> rose: there was this question and this debate when he testified about the fact that he rented his house. if he had not represented his house to anyone and kept it there and occasionally went home would this not be an issue? >> well, if he had done that, he would have no issue at all because he would have had maintained a residence. he would have vo
