you've got 1,836 sworn illinois state troopers, obviously a fair amount of them are in the chicago areare assisting with this, as well. the chicago police say they have provide their aviation unit to help with any potential searches or help canvas the area. and then you have the fbi. the strength of the fbi at this point is their ability -- they should be able to get the information off of the closest cell phone towers there, to see what numbers were in the area that will provide a haystack of information, and based on other information that they gather, they can be able to try to determine who might have been in that area at the time, does it link up to anybody who they have any sort of threat information on? and kind of go forward from there. i'm going to intentionally withhold details, because there is somebody they are looking for, but that's one of the things the fbi can do. one of the most important players at this point is the atf. they really need to -- now that we know that a high powered rifle was left behind, we really need to know who was the person that purchased that, what

chicago. it is an upscale area.out 14 minutes after the parade began this morning at 10:14, somebody, police believe a man named robert bobby e. crimo, it's c-r-i-m-o, opened fire from the rooftop of a building and shot down on people, killing six and wounding at least two dozen, maybe more. the numbers, of course, are still coming in. he is believed to be 22 years old and is driving a silver 2010 honda fit. and police did not say where they believe he might have been going or might be headed. but apparently he has left the area. remember, in that area of highland park, there was this severe lockdown all day. police put in a very tight perimeter and told people to shelter in place. that was an indication that it was possible that they had him or they knew he might be in the area. well, apparently, he's not there. he is on the run somewhere. police don't know where. he is also from -- and they didn't say highland park specifically. they would only say he's from the area. again, someone said is he from highland park?

and it's a tragedy that so many other people in this chicago area, chicagoland area, have very similart i have realized since my brother was murdered and i have taken a deeper dive than i have any other time before, i realize that these soft on crime policies are a cancer to the organs of local government in chicago, whether it be the judiciary system whereas the chief justice of cook county implemented bail reform in 2017, where he's allowing criminals to walk free at no cost so they just commit a crime and they go out and commit another crime. they have no chase policies where they can't pursue a suspect without talking to their supervisor beforehand, whether they be running on foot, where they really can't chase a suspect or in their cars. or even the prosecutor's office that is refusing to prosecute cases. she dropped 25,000 felony cases including rape and murder. this is unacceptable, neil. the people in chicago are suffering and only suffering more because of the inaction that has taken place with the leaders of the city of chicago. now my family has been impacted by this great a

in the chicago area, where a gunman killed six people in the fourth of july parade. shots rang out sending people running for their lives. 24 people have been transferred to local hospitals. they canceled independence day celebrations and authorities urging everyone to stay indoors as the shooter is still at large and believed to be armed and dangerous. police describe the suspect as a white male between the ages of 18 and 20, left behind what was described as a high-powered rifle. the deputy chief of the lake county sheriff's office described the shooting as, quote, completely random as well as parade participants. a doctor who was at the parade and stayed on the scene to help treat victims compared it to those sustained in a war zone. >> we heard gunshots people thought for five seconds that it was fireworks until people started screaming bodies down, bodies down and everyone started running. there were six people who i saw who were horribly, horribly injured from the gun shot, and the gunshot wounds that these people sustained are like war injuries. i've never ser

chris swecker, and another who lives in the chicago area. tom, you first, by the way, we know you come from the north shore of chicago, you live there with your family. this is known to be a very low crime area. you look at these people with their children, they were out enjoying the festivities of the holiday weekend and this unfolded. how is that community doing today? >> well, i mean, it was a horrifying day yesterday, obviously, and you know, it is, it's an affluent suburb, you know, might even be called a little sleepy. you don't expect something like this to happen in this kind of a situation. it was made worse by the fact he remained at large for the better part of eight hours, folks around the north shore were told to stay home, and so i think look, it was just -- it was a tough day for folks on the north shore of chicago and unfortunately it's a scene that we have seen play out in various places around the country and you never think it's going to happen to your town or community until it does. >> sandra: until it does. >> it's stil

but police say the suspect was legally able to purchase the firearm in the chicago area. many are asking in this nation of law, what would have -- what might have stopped this attack? >> i think that's a question, laura, that everybody wants answered. and it's probably one of most difficult things to answer. because once he turned 18, under federal law, under the gun stroll act in 1968, he was loc legally allowed to buy that rifle, and once he turned 21, he was able to buy handguns. so i think it's going to be interesting to see the circum circumstances exactly under which he was able to obtain an ar-15 style rifle, given the law that was in that city. now, it has not been publicly released whether he actually bought that from a federal arms within the city or one of the neighbors cities. so he could certainly skirt a local ban on something by going over and purr cchasing it elsewhere. but they're supposed to check the driver's license and make sure that the address he puts on the fire arms transaction form report, the atf form, matches his i.d., and they have picked up o

area. they'll do their best. this is a suburb of the chicago of chicago, highland park. they'll have plenty of officers but they'll have to have plenty of eyewitnesses to describe his egress from the shooting scene, did people see him go down this block or that block, did he get into a vehicle. then they can jump on surveillance cameras and maybe even get lucky and get a license plate or something. it's a very difficult chase in these early moments, is when you're really trying to grab the most eyewitness information you can get from people who call in to the police and give them the tips. and of course as a commander, you're looking for motive, you always want motive because it might answer a question for you and help your direction. but it's very early, it's kind of early for that. but if i was a commander, i would be thinking along the lines of, you know, this is somebody that hates america. who shoots up a fourth of july parade? who shoots up a fourth of july parade? that is a very different kind of person, that's a person whose probably expressed, you know, very ant

even before that attack, at least 57 people were shot in the chicago area this weekend, 9 of them died. when you take the six months and five days of the year that have gone by in 2022, gun violence archive counts 309 mass shootings so far in 2022. those are incidents in which four or more people were shot or killed. more than one a day. actually more than two a day almost. just last weekend president biden signed brand new gun legislation into law. the most consequential and expansive bill of its kind in decade. during the signing ceremony he said the families of the victims of recent shootings told him, for god sake just do something. the president said, quote, today we did. he said lives will be saved. that was on june 25th. the law he signed strengthened background checks for buyers younger than 21. tightened the boyfriend loophole. it set aside funds for mental health resources and state's red flag laws. the law does not ban assault-style weapons. let me tell you, i have been covering these shootings on the ground from the scene for years, and they all have assault-style weapons.

what folks may not know if you're watching this and you're not from the chicago area is highland park is a wonderful idealic suburb that is pretty far away from the city of chicago and is the sort of place that doesn't really experience violence like this. it is actually also predominantly jewish communities, so my wife has a lot of -- who is jewish has a lot of her friends and we have a lot of close family friends there. and i will say that even for the people who were not physically harmed, there is a scarring that is there that you can't see. because for a lot of them, they were -- they were running for their lives, running in fear, afraid they were next and worried this may have been an attack for example on them because of their origin or their faith. so i think there is just still a lot of fear and concern in that community that remains and won't go away for quite sometime. >> yeah. understandably. so now let's talk about the legal fallout for this. we know the suspect had a troubled past and also threatened to kill his family with a knife. no charges were ever filed. at that ti

the shooting stunned the chicago area and the country as it celebrated the fourth of july. authorities have released details of the arrest. oh, my god. it is. it is him. that is him. this is cell phone video of robert cream, all the third being taken into custody by police. authorities described him as a person of interest in the july 4th parade shooting in highland park, a suburb of chicago. prior to the arrest, police spotted cream all in a silver honda fit. they caught up to him after a brief chase. he got out of the car. and they said, put your hands up and he put his hands up. and i didn't know if he was armed. my son go underneath the passenger seat. the arrest came after hours long manhunt by law enforcement. he said nothing. he had a very smug look. he was seemed to be very calm, cool and collective gunman on a rooftop opened fire on the independence day parade, killing at least six people, injuring dozens. and sending hundreds of people running in terror witnesses describe a chaotic and horrifying scene. i remember hearing shootings going like that and then reloadi
