the first one appeared in 2012, city of scoundrels about chicago. the second appeared in 2014, that was empire of sin about new orleans and now in 2018, "the mirage factory" about la. this one took me longer to write because the reading load was unbelievable, really for every one book of history about new orleans, there are probably four or 546 about la history. now, in the course of all this reading and thinking about cities, i've come to admire many things about cities. i really regard them as one of the amenities great inventions. i really think that they are one of the principal incubators of innovation and creative energy in the world today and although there has been some backsliding in recent years, i think the reason for this is that they act as kind of reservoirs of diverse city. they bring together people of all backgrounds, all races, all ethnicities, all classes and bring them into close proximity to each other and while this proximity and create a lot of friction and conflict and really i like a lot of what i write about in these books is conflict
