in the 1990s we located a chimney base, a brick chimney base, that we were able to figure out from the archaeology was part of a duplex or a slave quarter, with a central chimney and a hearth on either side, so there would be two households that would live there. with that we were able to line up the insurance plat with the rest of the grounds and able to start to explore this area for other outbuildings and what we found is that -- we've got three duplexes in this area. three homes for slave quarters, and four of these buildings we've marked. two smokehouses that are on the insurance map, a kitchen that's beside the house that's actually an 18th century kitchen that we located through archaeology and this other duplex which is one of three that we're going to be reconstructing. now, the timber frames that you see out here, these represent the size and the massings of these buildings, give visitors an idea where the buildings are and how large they are. what we've done with these, the timber framing is authentic to the early 19th century, we had an historic architect willie graham who

have had a hearth that was inside this chimney. on the other side there would be another hearth right here, and you would have had a raised wooden floor and 16 by 16 space for another household and probably would have been anywhere from four to six people living in each one of these spaces. so total you've got maybe 10 to 12 people in one of these duplexes. three of those, looking at 25, 30 people in this area. alternativity one of the duplexes would have been used by when visitors would come to see the madisons, they would have bringing personal slaves, their coachmen, a number of folks that would have been serving them, they would have needed a place to stay, maybe that was servant guest housing, it's hard to say, it was seen at other plantations in the time period. with the excavations, what you see here is the completed excavation of this site. we've excavated all the structural remains that were -- that had feature soil, we excavated the yard surfaces, and what happens to all the artifacts is that each one of these units, each

then this is the base of the chimney stack. this stack would have been brick all the way up through the top of the roof. and this little indent here is where the hearth would have been located. now, we don't have any evidence for a hearth actually where the slaves do their cooking on a daily basis. this hearth was probably built up off the ground because there's no evidence of burning in this area. which means this structure would have had a raised wooden floor. which is very different than those early 19th century slave quarters of the time period. it gives us an idea that the structures that were in the south yard were actually built to be seen by visitors. they we there were a little more resources put into these structures than we're finding in slave quarters in other areas of the property. this is the second duplex structure. this one is a little bit different than that one in terms of how it was built. this one had a stone chimney base. again, you would have had two households in this duplex. one would have had a space, 1

but not long ago i was up at a place called chimney rock in southwest colorado. and it's over 8,000 feet. and you are up at the southern end ftd rocky mountains and there is this scarp of rock that rises up probably about a thousand feet out of a valley floor and right at the tip of this scarp there are two twin towers of rock. if you get to a certain place on top of this very narrow butte, you can see between these twin towers and there happens to be a great house built between these two towers and every 18.6 years when the moon goes into its northernmost point on the horizon, it rises between those two towers. i was there at the beginning of the last 18.6 year cycle and we stood up there, probably 20 of us, researchers, forest service people, all gathered at the same spot with cameras and huddled -- it was late december at 8,000 feet and we were all watching this gap. and somebody had done very intricate work to figure out exactly where you need to stand to see the light at exactly the right time. and as we were all gathered up there, i remember this older arch

finding the next route it take you from ledge to ledge to ledge, down through cracks and narrows, chimneys leading down step by step. until you get to this arch. it's a small arch, it's only about this tall. the photograph is a little -- well, size, scale dimension, they all kind of leave out there. right inside of this arch way there is a bunch of broken pottery so you know this was a used route a thousand years ago. and the arch leads down into a canyon that opens up and you go up a side canyon into this little alcove where a piece of the ceiling has fallen just slightly. and i found this place. the first time i found this was on the 27th day of a back pack and i got up to this spot and i took my hat off and i stuck my head in the crack, which is something that i do frequently out there, because i know every once in a while you're going it see something back inside one of these cracks. and back in this crack there was a basket about 1500 years old that had been turned upside down so it wouldn't collect anything and it was way back down in the crack so that no light or wind would touch it

on the left, you see we also found buried in the other side of the chimney here, we found an iron anchor, which would have been what an iron crane was bolted to. the crane would have been used for hanging pots over the fire for cooking. here is an i mage that shows wht it might have looked like. note again, iron crane inside the fireplace, as well as both on the same side here. there's the iron crane, and smaller red oven there. having a kitch especially on the first floor of a slave quarters large enough to serve the entire household was typical of an urban slave quarters near or attached to the property owner's residence. you know, in looking at a building as a primary source, i'm always interested in the wear patterns. and that's the evidence of how human beings habitually impacted a building and left their marks on it. orlando ridow, a member of a teamworking to study and document this building, has identified these wear patterns. see that slanted pattern? identified those patterns as the marks left by the sharpening of a knife there on the edge of the original firebox. while the peo
