thank you, first of all, to all our friends in chinatown for welcoming us back. my first sunday streets started out back here. was it three years ago? it is amazing it has been that long and we have grown so much. i want to echo and really recognize what mayor lee said. this really is about connecting our neighborhoods. when do we see folks from neighborhoods across the city coming out on their bicycles, their skateboards, their strollers, on their two feet, and walking, enjoying linking neighborhood to neighborhood. i love to come here and sample some of the amazing food, to go to fisherman's wharf and the they're not as a tourist, but as a local, go to the mission and check out the flavor of 24th street, to connect to ocean beach at golden gate park. this event is about displaying the best of san francisco, for those of us who live here. it is not only healthy and great for the environment. not only a great way to give the family activity at a low cost, but it is a great way to increased -- to appreciate our city, and that is what i love. i want to share also t

we have chinatown. people have immigrated here.y did not carry the immediate language, but they're just as valuable to everybody here in the whole city. they live in vulnerable buildings and neighborhoods. i thank god we have a great fire chief and fire department. i have been working with them all hours of the day and night. we use these disasters as tools for ourselves. we ask ourselves what we have forgotten and what we can do better. we know the biggest gap is that our population changes dramatically every five years in the city. we have a host of new people that come in to occupy our buildings, to become residents. they do not have what we did five years ago. some of them do not know what we have just trained ourselves on a year ago. they do not have the. -- they do not have it. they are not ready. reminding ourselves every year, every few months, go through those drills. make sure we are accessing 72. org, we have the culturally competent sirens going in every neighborhood. i just left our newest director of dem in my office

this property has an appearance which existed before pre chinatown -- that existed before chinatown. there is the problem of serial permitting. there is absolutely no objection on my behalf or any of the hundreds of the people that have nurtured my work over the last 12 yearsthe cooking school thatt into the building has been put into the building. we are here to discuss how we properly take care of this that has not been properly taken care of. there are laws that are supposed to be overseeing this project. those continue to be made. it is inappropriate. for further taxpayer monies to be put into this project until a global plan is in place. there has to be a proper order for things. not to continue to take out a permit after permit. i can show you a few pictures that may interest you. in my brief, i discussed at the entrance to the storefront, number 731 note was an ornate wooden door. that was at a time for tax payers to receive the best. this store has replaced this. there was some level to copy what was there. it is not recognized in historic preservation. the duplication of eff

we call the richmond district the new chinatown in the 1980's at that time. just being around the tremendous unique neighborhood, and discovering san francisco in the 1980's as i grew up, but i also have been very active as a community organizer. i worked in chinatown, and some first jobs also at the mental health center in the richmond area multi services in the 1980's, and i was also a staff are at the chinatown youth center -- i was also a staffer. a lot of my work has been supporting community empowerment, especially in an immigrant and people of color communities. most recently, i have been teaching at san francisco state. i ran the immigrant rights coalition in the city in the 1990's for several years. i'm also an immigration attorney, and a lot of my passion is supporting in power met for immigrant communities in the city as well. >> why did you choose to live in san francisco? supervisor mar: a lot of people bring this up, but is one of the most exciting, culturally diverse places in the world. learning about new cultures and people from different par

you will find dead zones within chinatown. we are talking about a continuous signal, a cohesive signal between cell towers. we are not going to go out and throw away our cell phones because somebody wants to go back to drums and sending carrier pigeons. they are demanding environmental impact reports. the city is in a financial crisis. to do eir's on projects like this is irresponsible. we have america's cup 2012 coming up. where is it going to take place? along fisherman's wharf, along north beach. you are going to have the upper class tourists coming. if they are here trying to use their cell phone and they're smart phone and their laptop and we get system busy, are they going to recommend that their friends come to san francisco and bring us tourist business? i do not think so. we all know what happened when we had the giants celebration downtown. we had dead zones. people could not call people. what we are talking about here is a very low impact environmentally and architecturally. it is not creating a huge health hazard.

chinatown community development center completed in roughly 2007 a building in chinatown called the internationalel. a beautiful new project on the corner of jackson street. 101 units. even though there was only 101 units in the building, whenever we opened up the application, on the first day, there was a line spanning about to reveal a blocks, and we ultimately ended up getting 10,000 applications for 100 spots. i think that really speaks to the need and demand for affordable senior housing. these types of draconian cuts are not just going to impact senior housing and cdbg. they are going across the board, and i think the kind of devastation they could bring to volatile communities in the city and across the country are really profound. i really applaud the city and supervisor chu for bringing up this issue. supervisor chu: what was the impact, do you think, from that potential cut? >> this was proposing to zero of that program. i think for me, the impact would be that it would be near impossible, i think, to create that kind of deeply affordable senior housing if those cuts are actually impose

chinatown. i have over three decades of experience as an educator. planting and maintaining trees, [unintelligible] beginning in the mid-70s about an arts center that resulted in a new city park that transformed about 7 acres of their land -- derelict land into -- in those early days, we have and gardens in the middle of the 101 interchange. since then, by nonprofit, the farm was an early life frame. it was used each month at six schools in san francisco in three neighborhoods. exelsior, vernal heights, they are transforming their neighborhood and school campus into a green, and unique living libraries. two of the branch living library and think parks are part of the watershed. another initiative that i am actively engaged in is developing a nature walk linking parks, schools, housing developments, other open spaces and streets leading to the creek at the south end of st. mary's park. we have already planted over 600 california native trees that have been funded by the california department of f
