i will say that chinatown as chinatown gets a surprising amount of coverage, not just in, you know, new york city, but in cities all over the united states, in part because of this exotic factor, for better or for worse. so if there's a crime or there is some kind of movement or there is some kind of building or there's a conflict, in certain kind of things they'll cover pretty well, compared to other immigrant groups, like, let's say, koreans or... korean americans or certain kinds of... like, maybe even south asian americans, i think partially because almost every major city has a chinatown or something thereof, right? and so in sort of the intellectual mind share of any given city, there's always a fascination with chinatown and chinese immigrants. >> hinojosa: you said that part of why you wanted to write this book was because you wanted to understand your own americanness, and you wanted americans, all of us, to understand who we are. >> right. >> hinojosa: so what don't we understand, and what did you come away understanding better about who you are as an american? and you have th

"action news" reporter annie mccormick is live near that picket line at ninth and race in chinatown. good morning. >> reporter:. >> reporter: good morning, tam. already we're starting to see some people organizing ahead of that strike that is expected to begin at 6:00 a.m. about 40,000 employees and two dozen locations across the east coast are expected to strike. that includes here in philadelphia. they had been working without a contract since august. to give you an idea of what one of those strikes may look like, take a look at this video. this is video he from a strike from back in 2011. that lasted two weeks. many were hoping to avoid that. well, the workers at odds with verizon are members of two unions, the communication workers of america and the international brotherhood of electrical workers. they represent installers customer service and repairmen. verizon wireless is not affected by the potential strike. the issues at hand wages, job security and healthcare, also pensions. the head of cwa says retired employees could be in jeopardy. many fear the company will make layoffs

so just under 30 minutes from that here at second and race in chinatown.wa local 1300, and also the ibew, saying that they're protesting a plan to freeze wages and plans to make it easier for verizon to conduct layoffs. they've been working without a contract since august 1st, and they say essentially talks have broken down. they are among about 40,000 workers that are going to be hitting the picket line really officially striking ought 6:00 without a deal. and then at 8:00 demonstrating around the country, here, at ninth and race, demonstrating at the verizon offices, now, verizon's president says they're ready for a strike, and not only are they ready, they are anticipating little if any disruption to services for customers. the last time there was a strike it, lasted about two, three weeks. so many people are hoping that doesn't happen here. we're seeing workers lining up right now, in some red outfit, look like those could be union shirts right there. they are getting ready to demonstrate. so we will see exactly what happens here, and of course bring i
