harry: i grew up in chinatown, a chinatown that seemed never to change.ife was simple and predictable. but, you know, things around the country, change was happening. the civil rights movement was in full bloom. the cold war was going on. and in 1965, because of the immigrant and nationality act, there was a huge influx of chinese immigrants. chinatown wasn't ready. we did not have enough housing, jobs, and educational programs. robert: now, that was quite a gold mine to find that video, huh? i told you before, i was a documentary producer, and finding the appropriate pictures, visuals, and images to be able to tell your story is pretty crucial. and you shot a lot of that, right? harry: yes, yes. robert: did you shoot it with the idea of being, like, a filmmaker, or knowing that it would have some historical value one day? harry: well, it actually started as a student project, but it got so involved that i couldn't finish it before the semester was over. so, i boxed it. i promised my teacher that someday, i would finish. so, some, now, 45 years later, i'm

. >>> new york is home to one of our country's oldest chinatowns.here that many chinese immigrants begin their journey. china may be booming, but there are growing number of poor workers at the bottom who believe they will have a better shot in america. just below the manhattan bridge there's a row of cramped store front. employment agencies where newly arrived workers seek their first job. men like vincent chou. i spent a lot of time in new york chinatown and never noticed all these employment agencies until today. there's so many of them. what do they do? >> that's how we find a job, especially new immigrant come here first, to look for the first job. when i got here i just walked into one of these employment agencies. and they have position. >> when you first came to america, is this the kind of work you expected? >> well i decided to come here, i was thinking about some better job. maybe like 40 hour work week. make some money for living. maybe i can go to school. but i don't see any choice here. >> like other poor immigrants he had to seek a me

and my mom worked in manhattan chinatown to garment industry. and the in-line provided a direct link from the chinatown subway station to eighth avenue in brooklyn. it was home, so during the time i was growing up, definitely observed some very, very dramatic and transformational changes in the neighborhood. i'm an urban planner, and i i think that as an urban planning graduate student, much of the literature if any existed about immigrant neighborhoods tended to kind of amplify its enclave qualities of self-sufficiency and insularity, and also that it was they are very homogenous, ethically homogenous. my experience in sunset park is one of course one of the most diverse neighborhoods in brooklyn, even though eighth avenue and oftentimes it's refer to as the third satellite chinatown in your city, it's actually majority latino. it's majority asian latino neighborhood, historically puerto rican but increasingly mexican. in fact, mexicans are now the largest latino group in sunset park. and in 2013 and just on tuesday sunset park elected the firs
