we start with chinatown in yokohama.estination is about an hour from central tokyo and a big attraction domestically. out of 20 million annual visitors, most are from japan. however, after the first case of the coronavirus in japan was reported in january, visitors to chinatown plunged ahead of other tourist destinations. many people mistakenly associated the district with the outbreak in china. we went behind the scenes to see how the people of the neighborhood are responding. >> the heart of downtown yokohama, japan's second most populous city, lies the country's biggest chinatown. it this is one of the most famous high end restaurants in the neighborhood, but the coronavirus has hit business hard. >> translator: we disinfect from 2:30 to 5:00 in the afternoon. >> reporter: this is the owner. his father took over after moving to japan from guangdong province. the restaurant was founded in 1892 and specializes in cantonese cuisine. it has long been a favorite hunt for the business elite who like to conduct negotiate yio

we saw you with volunteers out there this chinatown week after week. tell us about the efforts you've been making, what's planned in specifics for this week of action. >> absolutely. thank you so much. we have been on the ground. api council represents 56 nonprofits. so many of them are on the ground every day. as you know, there's so many challenges with doing -- organizing work for the census, specifically field work. when there's a global pandemic happening. so we've been doing our part because we know that there's nothing more effective than person-to-person organizing and contact, especially with so many of our community members who don't have as much technological savvy and want that personal contact. so we are pretty much all over getting the message out there, have been in chinatown. we're going to be in japantown. so for the next -- for pretty much every weekend, we'll be out in the community with a table and signing people up. >> and this question is for either one of you. you know, for so long i have always said that as an asian-american wom

you can see some smoke sight now, this was in the chinatown district on webster street. it broke out around 8:30 a.m. crews think it raced between two buildings in a tight space and got inside this building. they had to cut into the roof as you see there to gain access to the fire on the second floor. here is another view from the ground. the building houses several businesses including the rang dang vietnamese restaurant. 70 firefighters on scene successfully prevented the fire from spreading to the buildings next door which were evacuated including a bank. >> the old buildings, were they built really closely to their neighbors so it always creates an issue with exposures. we want to protect the exposure at the same time that we are taking care of be so tight. >> people all over oakland and alameda posted video and pictures from the scene this morning of the smoke and the flames. we found this video on the citizen app. no injuries to report. webster street is going to be closed down at least throughout this afternoon. so be aware of that if you are headed through downto

it is considered the fourth chinatown in san francisco. the residents are of chinese ancestry. the second unique, and fun aspect about this area is it is the garden district. there is a lot of urban agriculture and it was where the city grew the majority of the flowers. not only for san francisco but for the region. and of course, it is the location in mclaren park which is the city's second biggest park after golden gate. many people don't know the neighborhood in the first place if they haven't been there. we call it the best neighborhood nobody has ever heard our. every neighborhood in district nine has a very special aspect. where we are right now is the mission district. the mission district is a very special part of our city. you smell the tacos at the [speaking spanish] and they have the best latin pastries. they have these shortbread cookies with caramel in the middle. and then you walk further down and you have sunrise cafÉ. it is a place that you come for the incredible food, but also to learn about what is happening in the neigh
